"poo vaasam" is a nice melody in Hamsanadham. In 2002, there was another notable Hamsanadham "vayadhu vaa vaa enradhu" from Thulluvadho Illamai.
"Poove idhu poojaikaalame" and "Oodha kaathu" are my choice from GA. The success of "Ucchi vaagudeduthu" spawned clones like "Vaadaatha rosaapoo","pattu vanna rosaavam"(SG from Kanni paruvathiley)

'poo vaasam' is a very good melody by VS and it was a regular song in our PP page when it was released.. There was another good song in Anbe sivam 'Mouname paarvaiyaal' sung by spb.. For some reason this song was not there in the movie... 'Panikaatre' from Run is another unnoticed melodious song by VS... Anbe sivam and Run were two very good albums by VS in the last 2 years but albums like Dhool are the ones that become hits these days..:)

well bb,
when someone of status OISG expresses opinion like "I do not have high opinions on Vidya sagar. He rips one of IR songs for the tune and for the arrangement rips of ARR" what an immediate respect that opinion :D
NaaraayaNa NaaraayaNa NaaraayaNa.
A nice song, though.

I have been enjoying dhool.com for nearly a couple of years now - After logging on, that's one of the first things in the morning that I do. Kudos to bb and the team.
This question really bothers me - does the person "Saravanan" exist, or is it a name for database of some kind? He seems to know about anything and everything. Can somebody let me know?

Have you people noticed that the audio version and the video version of poo vaasam are quite different..? I find the video version much better... where there are quite a few variations, not the kind you would find in SPB's songs, but variations nevertheless.
Other songs that come to my mind when i think of hamsanaadham are Thenral vandhu, Sorgame enralum,om namaha, isayil thodangudhamma (IR); Ennulle ennulle edhedho seigiradge(Bharadwaj)
There's this piece in Guna that s also a beautiful Hamsanadham, first time when he sees the heroine (abhirami, appo varum. That BGM... I think is one of IR's best.

Shwetha, I haven't noticed it. Why would there be a difference between the audio and the video version, especially in singing? Sounds strange.

bb,
I noticed some sort of the same in 'Autograph' too. In the song 'ovvoru pookalume', sung in the Blind school by Sneha, in the end of the song, the Blind school conductor joins Sneha with a couple of lines in the movie, but I saw another video version in SUN TV where Sneha sang it from the start to finish. Can someone clarify? Thanks.

yes, the movie version of poovaasam in anbe sivam is different from the audio version. You can notice that in the way Vijay Prakash sings both the versions. I think the male singer portion was alone recorded again and then incorporated into the movie version.
Similarly, in the "autograph" song "ovvoru pookkalumey", the version they are showing on the tv channels is different from the one in the movie. In the tv channel version, chitra sings the entire song as a solo. Whereas, in the movie version, the character of the blind conductor sings a couple of lines in the second stanza.

Song of the Day: vasantha kaalam varumO from marakka mudiyuma.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/vasanthak.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘vasantha kaalam varumO’ from marakka mudiyuma. Sung by P.Suseela. Humming by K.J.Yesudas. Lyrics by Suradha. Music by T.K.Ramamoorthi.
Mekala Pictures’ Marakka Mudiyuma -1966 starred S.S.R., Muthuraman, Cho, Devika, Kanchana, S.V.Sahasranamam, K.Sarangapani, Major Sundararajan, S.N.Lakshmi & others. Screenplay and dialogues were by Mu. Karunanidhi. Cinematography was by Amirtham. The film was produced and directed by Murasoli Maran.
It was a harrowing tale of the travails an indigent woman undergoes: ‘--arumbu mudhal karugiya malaraagum varai allarRpattu azhugindra peNNoruthiyin kaNNeeraal theettapattadhE indha chithiram--’ proclaimed Karunanidhi in his prologue to the film. Orphaned as small children, a sister and her two brothers get separated by a predictable turn of circumstances. Fate deals one brutal blow after another as the girl grows up to womanhood. A series of woes befall her. Finally, horrified when her own brother turns up in a drunken stupor as a prospective vulture to prey on the charms of her flesh, she summons up a swift and gory end to her wretched existence. Plodding, prosaic proceedings, salvaged to some extent by Devika’s restrained performance, and some unforgettable songs by TKR:
kaagitha Odam kadal alai meedhu- PS (Mu.Karunanidhi)
vaanum nilamum veedu - ALR ( Mayavanathan)
etti etti Odum pOdhu kodhikkudhu nenjam-TMS (Trichy Thyagarajan)
oNNu kodutha onbathu kidaikkum- TMS & PS (Mu.Karunanidhi)
vasantha kaalam varumO- PS & KJY (Suradha)
kaagitha Odam kadal alai meedhu- TMS & PS (Mu.Karunanidhi)

Suradha’s real name was Rajagopalan. Being an ardent admirer of Bharathidasan, he adopted the nom de plume 'Suradha' (short for Subburathina dasan). Suradha entered the film world as a dialogue writer, penning dialogues for films like P.U.Chinnappa’s Mangaiyarkkarasi-1949, MKT’s Amarakavi-1952 and MGR’s Genoa- 1953. His career as a lyricist took off with the songs ‘vetRilai pOdaamalE vaai sivandha pachchai pasum kiLigaL’ and ‘yaanai thandham polE piRainila’ in Amarakavi. These two songs were early illustrations of the Uvamai Kavignar’s famed mastery in employing arresting analogies to lend luster to his lyrics. Over the years Suradha got to write only a handful of songs, but he has made his sojourn in tfm memorable with his poetic flourishes in songs like ‘aadum oonjalaippolE alaiyE aaduthE’(En Thangai-1952 ), ‘kaNNil vandhu minnalppol kaaNuthE’ & ‘varuga varuga vEndhE’ (Nadodi Mannan- 1958), ‘amudhum thEnum edhaRku’ (Thai Pirandhaal Vazhi Pirakkum-1958), ‘eNNamellaam Or idathaiyE naaduthE’ (Thirumanam-1958). In later years, V.Kumar teamed up with Suradha successfully and this collaboration brought about popular songs like ‘aadi adangum vaazhkkaiyada’ (Neerkkumizhi-1965), ‘viNNukku mElaadai paruva mazhai mEgam’ (Naanal-1965) and ‘thunindhu nil thunindhu sei thunindhu sel’ (Major Chandrakant- 1966).
Suradha has been honored with the TN’s Govt’s Rajarajan Award and Paavendar Barathidasan Memorial Award.

It was the year after TKR and MSV had wound up their prolific partnership. And while MSV was immediately flooded with numerous offers, only 4 films came TKR’s way in 1966: Sadhu Mirandaal, Thenmazhai, Madras To Pondicherry and Marakka Mudiyuma. Though some of the songs from these films -‘aruLvaayE nee aruLvaayE’, ‘ennadi chellakkaNNu’ and ‘vizhiyaal kaadhal kaditham’, for instance, did enjoy fleeting spells of popularity, they were no match to the stupendous successes harvested by MSV during the same period. And failure being an orphan, TKR found very few producers knocking his door in the following years. Nonetheless, his unquestioned talents did find some outlet in films like Aalayam, Naan, Pattathu Rani & Engalukkum Kaalam Varum-all 1967, Moondrezhuthu, Neelagiri Express & Soappu Seepu Kannadi –all 1968, Thangachurangam-1969, Kaadhal Jothi & Sangamam- both 1970, Sakthi Leelai-1972, Avalukku Aayiram Kanngal-1975 and Ival Oru Pournami-1987.

I have seen Marakka Mudiyuma twice- once in the tent kottai of my village, and again some years later on TV. And both times, I waited eagerly for this song--and I waited in vain. For the song didn’t find place in the film. Perhaps it was only that the song had been edited in both the versions I saw, for I like to cling to the hope that someday I’ll get to see it. But one version I saw did feature a short humming that seemed to belong to this song. Going by the lyrics, it may have been envisaged for that segment when Devika is waiting for deliverance in the form of Muthuraman, so that all her miseries can come to an end.
Suradha’s fondness for analogies finds delightful release here- how fetchingly he brings into play the innermost longings of the heroine as she bemoans her hapless state, and prays for tidings of happier times ahead. Can the koel drenched in the monsoon showers sing soulfully; can fish swim gleefully in steaming water, she wonders plaintively. Particularly poignant are the lines ‘veeNai irundhum payanEdhu, vandhu meettum varaiyil isaiyEdhu’.
It is Suseela’s song all the way—hark at the wistful note that creeps into her song, and the helpless anguish that her lines are soaked in. Despair has never sounded so dulcet.
It must have been TKR’s classical expertise that urged him to pick the uncommon Vagadhiswari to be the tantalizing trellis into which the lyrics are dexterously interwoven. The alluring interludes- the first one laced with melancholic humming and the second one ending with nimble movements on the frets appropriately leading to ‘veenai irundhum payanEdhu’, the tabla that seems to support the voices with empathy, the forlorn humming imaginatively tucked in between ‘enayE thEdi’ and the pallavi, all point in unison to the remarkable musical genius of Trichy Krishnaswami Ramamoorthi-the Mellisai Mannar whom fortune didn’t deign to favor.

Saravanan, thanks for your nice clarification. I remember seeing KJY's name in the title card. But when watching the movie, I didnt see any song sung by him, as you stated. I thought, perhaps I missed the song.
There are few bit songs, like "theru kooththu" songs. These bit songs are all sung by SSR in the movie, since SSR acts as an artist who acts in dramas. Every time when Sarangapaani (Kanchana's dad) get angry with SSR or Kanchana, SSR sings such bit songs to cool him.
