Golden voice - P.B. Srinivas

Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered P.B. Srinivas thro' musicindiaonline.com. His voice is so clear, deep and rich. He seems to have sung many old songs. Was he a a recognized artise in his time? Did he receive any awards?

  M.R. Raju, PBS' style of rendition is nowhere close to any other playback singer's, esp. Rafi's. You observation is at best, laughable. I rest my case here. PBS must have made a mental note of Talat Mahmood's delivery style esp. when it came to expressing melancholy. PBS ofcourse is technically a superior singer to Talat.

  it surprises me that such opinions such as MR Raju's exist! PBS is in aleague of his own and to compare him with other singers is blasphemy!

  It is gratifying to note that people are still keen to know more about PBS. Here are more tit bits on PBS:
  
  1. PBS had a long standing ambition since young to sing with Latha Mangeshkar. For this, he went to see Gemini boss, Vasan, seven times. His ambition materialised only in 1964 at AVM when they produced the film, Main Bhi Ladki Hoon, The song he sang with Latha was "Chanda Se Hoga".
  
  2.PBS's first film opportunity was given by Veenai vidwan and music director, Emani Sankara Sastri. It was for the Hindi film, Ms Sampath, where he sang a few sequences in a number of songs. When Gemini boss listened to these songs, he was very impressed with PBS's style of singing. He complimented Sastri for introducing a good singer and remarked in tamil, "Ivar paada vaendam, hum seithalepothum, kallum urugum" (English translation: There is really no need for PBS to sing -- even if he hums, it is good enough for a stone to melt).
  
  3.MSV was very impressed with PBS's rendering of the song, "Udalulku uyir kaaval" in Manapanthal that he advised PBS to jack up his rate henceforth.
  
  4. There was a time when AM Raja was thought to be the most appropriate playback singer for Gemini Ganesan. Music Director, G. Ramanathan, contributed to the positioning of PBS as a playback singer for Gemini Ganesan by giving two beautiful songs to PBS: "Kaatru vaeli nee idai kannama" in the film, Kapalotiya thamizhlan, and "Inpam pongum vennila" in the film Veerapandiya kattabomman. As expected, PBS gave a splendid performance.
  
  5. The song, Thulithirinta pen ondru, was initially not sung by PBS. He was waiting to sing this song before taking the night train. Finally, the producers got somebody else to sing the song and picturised it on Gemini Ganesan and Savithri. PBS remarked in tamil,"Paadamaleye naan railyerinen" (Translation: I boarded the train without getting the chance to sing the song). It was only later on, for some reasons, that PBS was approached to render the song.
  
  6.Writer Vamanan noted that the secret for the melody in PBS's songs is the special effort that PBS takes to stretch the music director's and lyricist's contributions further -- this being done through understanding the meanings of the lyrics, deciding where to intonate the words in the song to convey the meaning of the song further,and understanding where to add flavour to the lyrics throgh modulation of his voice. Coupled to all these is his unique voice.(Source; Thirai Isai Alaigal, by Vamanan).
  
  7. When Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon in 1968, PBS wrote an English song, "Man to
  Moon, Moon to God", composed music for this song and sang it with S. Janaki. PBS then released a record of this song and sent a copy each to Armstrong and then President Nixon. Both of them appreciated the effort and wrote to PBS to extend their thanks.

  ACTUALLY IF U TAKE A VERY CLOSE LOOK THE STYLE FOLLOWED BY ALL THE THREE WILL BE SIMILAR,OFCOURSE THE GURU IS RAFI SAAB,WHILE PBS WAS A BIT DIFFERENT,SPB A IS REPLICA OF RAFI,RAFI WAS THE FIRST SINGER IN INDIAN CINEMA WHO COULD EASILY DIFFERENCIATE A HAPPY SONG OR A SAD SONG WITH HIS MODULATION,PBS DID THAT WITH GREAT EFFECT,CHINNA CHINNA KANNANUKKU WILL START OFF HAPPILY WITH A SORROW DIP IN BETWEEN AND FINISH AS A HAPPY SONG,EXCELLENT MODULATION AND SPB PROVED HES THE BEST IN VOICE MODULATIONS,SIRIYA PARAVAI LAUGH FROM ANDHA ORU NIMIDAM IS AN EXAMPLE

  The Tamil Nadu governent's Kalaimamani award, honourable doctorate degree from Arizona University, Karnataka Rajyotsava award from the Karnataka government and the Andhra Pradesh government's Ugadhi Puraskar are the awards that I have to my credit.

  Well, look for various links on PBS to know more about him. He is truly one of the greatest singers in IFM and is a pioneer in starting the melody wave in all southern languages.
