Golden voice - P.B. Srinivas

Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered P.B. Srinivas thro' musicindiaonline.com. His voice is so clear, deep and rich. He seems to have sung many old songs. Was he a a recognized artise in his time? Did he receive any awards?

  PBS named it as 'DIAMOND KEY'. As you mentioned, based on this formula, one can easily find out the notation for the 72 melakarta ragas.
  
  Regarding his mastery in poetry in 8 languages, it's amazing. He writes poems in such a way that if you addup all the first letters of every line of the poem, it will convey something to the reader. It may well be the name of the person reading. It's not necessarily the first letter of every line. It could be say, the 4th letter of every line if joined together will convey a good meaning.
  He calls this as 'Chitra Kavithvam' in Telugu and someother name in other languages. This he can do in all 8 languages he knows, truly a genius.

  Besides ennarugil neeyirunthal from thirudaathe,is there any other songs by p.b.srinivas for mgr.please don't include paal vannam paruvam kandu from paasam because the song was sung by kalyankumar in the film.

  SPB and PBS are great in their own ways and any hyper-comparisons with PBS would make SPB blush! SPB still refers to Jesu-anna; MSV saar, Real-Raaja; little master (ARR); golden greats (for a number of old composers and singers). As for SPB's versatility I did try listening to SPB's rendition of others' songs on dhool and was disappointed. It's not SPB's fault. That's the way the songs have been composed and imprinted in our memories. Vijaybhaskar had the real measure of all singers and knew the limitations of each one of them. He talks a little about this in one of his last interviews.

  Many apologies for not responding sooner as I was offline because of some committments. Regarding the Hindi/Urdu poems, I don't have any with me. You could try getting the book, Pranavam, which PBS released quite recently and which contains selections of his poems in eight languages, including Hindi/Urdu. There is also a tamil film. Nandu, with music by Ilayaraja, and for which PBS composed two Urdu songs. PBS fondly remembers the compliments which Ilayaraja showered on him after composing these Urdu songs -- my music was ordinary but your lyrics elevated the song tremendously.
  
  Many of the Urdu ghazals which PBS composed and sang were for performances which he gave and also for those with Emana Sankara Sastri's daughter, Devi Moorthy.It is a pity that these were not recorded and released as albums. I can recollect one Urdu ghazal album by PBS which was released sometime back but it is no longer available now for sale. Even the Tamil ghazals which PBS released in 2000 were sung by OS Arun in a concert, and which was recorded as such and released by Mudhra Recording Compaany. This album is one which I treasure very much, both for the soulful lyrics and melodius music, all by PBS.
  
  PBS has a lot of literary gems hidden inside him. There needs to be further recognition of this great artist in order to unearth these for the benefit of music lovers.

  Some more vignettes of information on PBS:
  
  1. PBS was a lyricist for a few Malayalam films. There was also a couple of tamil films for which he has composed lyrics in Tamil for music directors, Shankar-Ganesh.He was also a lyricist for a Kannada film. It is a pity that he did not get more opportunities to show his mettle.
  
  2. PBS had a passion for music from a young age. His maternal uncle, Kidambi Krishnamachari, was his friend, philosopher and guide in encouraging him in this pursuit. Krishnamachari was also instrumental in getting PBS to sing on stage at the age of twelve.
  
  3. Recognising PBS's passion for music, his father brought him to Madras in 1951 and introduced him to music director, Emana Sankara Sastri. Asked to sing a song, PBS acquitted himself so well with a Hindi song that Sastri told PBS's father that PBS's voice is so sweet that he has a great future in film music and that he should leave PBS with him while he return home.
  
  4. It was probably his gratitude to Emana Sankara Sastri that made PBS groom Sastri's daughter, Devi Moorthy as a ghazal singer. Together, they have given numerous ghazal performances.
  
  5.PBS is known to be a very hard working person even at this age. He writes poems even at the expense of his sleep.
  
  His scholarship in eight languages is so amazing that he is worthy of consideration for even the highest literary awards. Someone should nominate him for these awards. Commercial efforts need to be made to release his poems, ghazals and other musical compositions to the wider public.
  
  Another artiste who is able to acquit himself as a poet and as an all-rounder is Balamurali Krishna -- he has composed lyrics in tamil, telugu, kannada and sanskrit. BMK is also fluent in english and, I think, in hindi, plus he can play a number of instruments like violin, veenai, etc.
  
  Tfmers in Chennai can initiate interviews with PBS on a variety of topics about his life and work, and post these on this column for the benefit of his fans. It will sure make interesting reading.

  Further tit bits of information on PBS:
  
  1. It was the song, Yaar yaar aval yaaro, in the film, Paava Manippu, that gave a fillip to PBS's play back singing career in tfm. Referring to this song, he remarked in tamil, "Intha oru paatu en thalai ezhluthai matriyathu" (Translation: This one song changed my destiny)
  
  2. When Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy were composing music for the film, Padithal Mattum Pothuma, there was a beautiful duet song, Pon ondru kanden, by TMS/PBS. When Sivaji Ganesan heard this song and learnt that it is going to be picturised on him and Balaji in the film, he was mesmerised by PBS's rendering of the song and insisted that he will provide lip movements for the PBS portion of the song. The film director, however, told Sivaji that only TMS's voice suits him and that he should provide lip movements in the film only for the TMS portion of the song. Reluctantly, Sivaji agreed. This song is indeed a classical melody and gem. It is a tribute to the remarakable composing talents of Viswanthan-Ramamoorthy, Melissai Maamanargal.
  
  3.Underscoring the importance of meditation, PBS discovered that the letters of the word. meditation, can be unscrambled to form the sentence: I mean't do it! Like this, he has come up with numerous anagrams and other literary tit bits in all the eight languages he knows.
  
  4. Empasizing the importance of melody in musical compositions, PBS observed that the letter, m, in the word, music, stands for melody. If this m is removed,from music, the word becomes, usic (that is, you sick!). SPB frequently refers to this.

  None of mentions about negatie side of PBS.He is ungrateful person TKR is the one who gave him right braek in "ALLOKORU VEEDU" (1959),MANAPPANTHAL (1961) PAVA MANNIPPU (1961).He made him to change his delivery style and asked him to use MD.RAFFI's style and PBS become successful.But he never mentions anywhere.
