Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered P.B. Srinivas thro' musicindiaonline.com. His voice is so clear, deep and rich. He seems to have sung many old songs. Was he a a recognized artise in his time? Did he receive any awards?

RS,
>>Indeed, PBS is a multifacted personality -- singer, music director, poet, lyricist, scholar, linguist and great human being all rolled into one person. I wonder if there is any person in India who has mastery over these 8 languages<<
with due respect to DR.PBS, there is another singer who has more than what you have said above, that is none other than Dr.SPB, SPB is way ahead of any singer in terms of versatility and depth (bass) in voice, SPB has done more other things than PBS, which are SPB is dub artists , film producer and an actor.

Raghu,
I guess perhaps RS was referring to PBS mastery over 8 languages. True as you said, SPB is a great allrounder.

Yes, really PBS had a good voice than TMS, but he lost in TFM because TMS was the main voice of Shivaji and MGR. But he hass made a mark..

Ali,
Going by your argument, shouldn't it be "not in North India"?
Also,
Which male singer (apart from the Late Mohammed Rafi) in North India was/is as versatile as SPB? Singing pure classical, semi-classical, light, pop, fast numbers, fun numbers, sad numbers, songs that require vocal acrobatics, SPB has excelled in the widest range of compositions. Though Kishore Kumar excelled in a wide range, classical wasn't his forte.
Coming back to PBS, I wouldn't call him a 'versatile singer' at least going by the above definition. IMO, He falls under the same category as AM Raja, Ghantasala, Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood and Jayachandran, all of whom had similar strengths. You can't imagine a
"Endha Oor Endravaney" without PBS
"kAlayum Neeye" without A. M Raja
"LAgA chunri mein dAg" without Manna Dey.

Raghu
Are you saying that SPB is a poet, scholar etc. SPB has not shown any expertise/talent as a lyricist/scholar. Also regarding being a linguist - apart from having a strong command over the south indian languages, PBS has an amazing knowledge in other languages like Urdu, Sinhalese, Hindi etc. I think he has even written Urdu ghazals (not a joke by the way). I don't think SPB ever displayed such vast knowledge. PBS speaks around 10 or 11 languages.
There is a limit to sycophancy.

Peter Pan,
SPB may be one of the most versatile singers SI has ever produced but he cannot be compared to Rafi saab.....the phrase should be which singer is as versatile as Rafi and not the other way around.....SPB may have excelled in all the categories you have mentioned but Rafi did that and brought a new dimension to singing and had a far wider range than any other male singer....he cannot be compared with anyone.........even IR said it himself......."Rafi is still Rafi".

Kaumudi,
Very true.
PBS seems to be the true 'Sakala kala vallavar': singer, composer, writer and poet in as many as 8 languages!
Bhanumathi was called an 'AshtAvadhAni', for she used to handle a variety of jobs with equal ease.
Perhaps one could call PBS, 'Ashtabhasha Gnyani'. No other person can equal such an achievement.
Ali, No contest on Rafi's versatility. I was only comparing him against all singers except Rafi. I would definitely not place Rafi after SPB.

Whether the good quality you are asking is of songs, or of mp3s. Hope you get the delicate difference

kopi/ musicfan: Thats the only duet that PBS sang with SP Shailaja. It is from Inikkum Ilamai-1979. Music: S-G. PBS showed that he was in great form even then. Unfortunately, not many songs came his way even after this song.

Some more vignettes of information on PBS:
1. When he composes a poem, he also sets it to music using swara notation.
2. He possesses a mastery of the 72 melakarta ragas.
3. He has discovered a formula to generate the swara notation for any of the ragas.
4. He can compose a song in any of the 8 languages in less than 10 minutes.
5. His mastery of swaras and ragas were all self taught.
6. In his early days, besides english and telugu, he also knew hindi. He has a visharat qualification in hindi besides B.Com. degree. All the other languages which he picked up later were self taught. He is a scholar in all of these languages.
7. His mastery of urdu is amazing, and is known to astonish even urdu poets. He regularly participates in the Mushaira Urdu Poets Sammelan
Conference. I think this is held in Lucknow.
8. He is known to be a workaholic even in this age. (DOB: 22 Sep 1930 in Kakinada).
9. After singing the song, Naalam naalam thirunaalam, for the film, Kathalika Neramillai, he remarked that no music director can ever produce music that can rival the prelude music for this song composed by MSV/TKR.
10. At a function held in Singapore to honour MSV/TKR, SPB announced that he will be singing the song, Pon en paen from the film Police Karan Magal, with S Janaki, Thereupon, S Janaki remarked "PBS intha paatai romba arumaiyaha paadiirunthaar, ipo neengal intha paadalai paada pogirel endru sollugirale!" After singing the song, when SPB asked S Janaki how he sang the song, S Janaki mentioned, paravatillai!
It will be good if tfmers can meet up with PBS and interview him at the Woodlands Drive-in restaurant for us. There's a lot that we want to know about him.

Outsider,
PBS's mother tongue is telugu.
The many songs he has sung in kannada, especially for Raj Kumar,as well as his mastery of the kannada language, has made many kannada film fans to believe that he is actually kannada.
For the past 50 years, he has been based in Madras, where he has also enriched the tamil literary and film scene.
Likewise, the many urdu ghazals that he has composed, scored music for and sang, often with Emana Sankari's daughter, has people believing that he is urdu.
Also, the many hindi bhajans that he has composed and sung, often with P. Susheela and which S Janaki has also sung, marks him out to be a hindiwalla to anyone who listens and appreciates these bhajans.
He is also known to be a very good human being.
To summarise, PBS is a multifaceted personality whose passion is poetry and music in all the 8 languages.

Lots of good information. Thanks for that. I met PBS once when I visited Madras and told him that I was a fan of his. He started speaking to me in Thamizh and I told him that I am a telugu. Then he spoke in nice telugu and wrote a small poem for me in telugu and signed it. It is a lovely memory.
