Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered P.B. Srinivas thro' musicindiaonline.com. His voice is so clear, deep and rich. He seems to have sung many old songs. Was he a a recognized artise in his time? Did he receive any awards?

Manisegaran, thank you for your effort. The list makes me remember many of his gems.
I think 'Tholvi Nilaiyena Ninaithal' from Oomai Vizhigal can also be added to the list.

2. Athikkai Kaai Kaai- TMS-Bale Pandiya
3.Kaathal Enbathu Ethuvarai- Chandrababu- Paatha Kaanikkai
4. Nallavan Enakku Naane- TMS- Padithaal Mattum Pothuma
5. Aval Paranthu Ponale-TMS- Paar Magale Paar
6. Pen Onru Kanden- TMS- Padithaal Mattum Pothuma
7. Aarodum Mannil Enrum Neerodum- TMS, SG-Pazhany
8. Kavalaikal Kidakkattum Maranthuvidu-TMS- Panda Paasam
A few more of this nature.
Thanks

Manisegaran: What are the PBS duets in yaar nee and ganga gowri? I remember the first song in yaar nee picturized on Jaishanker - used to know this song, but have forgotten. The ganga gowri one was for Sivakkumar, I think.

An "off-beat" inquiry here:
Can someone tell me who were the music composers for these early 80's high quality tragic songs by Kishor?
1- Maen tera shehr chhor jaaoon gaa...
2- Ajnabee haen log yahaan par, ajnabi zamaana.....
Even better if someone can tell the years of the songs.

I vaguely remember that party song in Yaar Nee. Probably "Dikki Dikki" or something like that. Believe LR Eswary and P. Suseela too join in. Will re confirm later.

According to TFM data base, PBS is a multilingual lyricist having composed songs in many languages, including Singhalese. Can someone shed some light on this? If the statement is true, curious to know where he learned Sinhalese language. Has he sung any Sinhalese songs? I know AMR, Jikki, Jamuna Rani, K.Rani, Lata Mangeskar etc. have many Sinhalese songs to their credit, but never heard any Sinhalese songs by PBS.

Is it? I always taught it was a quatret.Next time I'll see if all ravi does is whistle in the song. As such KJJ always sings Vishvanathan vellai vennum as his closing song in his concerts ( even though PBS has sung the song! thaanikki theeni sari poyindi) Ok it is a bloomer I do not know where to hide!

sk/Vengayam, that 'whistle' in 'Nenjathai alli konjam thaa thaa' was by MS Raju. He whistled also in 'Nenjathile nee netru vandhaai'-Shanthi.
Vengayam- PBS didn't sing in 'Nenjirukkum engalukku' - it is only TMS & chorus voices.

Here's an article on PB Srinivas (Initials stand for PrativAdi Bhayankaram) with some lesser-known facts such as:
- He can read, write, speak and even compose poetry in 8 languages (Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English)!!
- He actually made his debut in Hindi at the age of 21, with 'Mr. Sampath', where he sang with Shamshad Begum, Jikki and Gita Roy.
- His dream came true when he got to sing a duet with Lata for a Meena Kumari-Dharmendra film
- As a composer, he has recently released a film album in Kannada called 'MahA SAdhvi', which boasts of singers like Parveen Sultana, SPB, yesudas, Vani Jayaram, Janaki, Susheela and Anuradha (Paudwal?).
Very interesting write-up.
PBS is a great singer, an all-rounder, who never got his due.

Peter Pan -
Thank you very much for this update on PBS. He is another fine artiste who didn't really get his due. I don't know why, but I always think that Talat Mahmood and PBS were similar in many ways (and both eclipsed by their colleagues TMS/Rafi in film singing).
I look forward to Maha Sadhvi, with such an A-list of singers, it should be something close to wonderful.

Peter Pan:
Parveen Sultana in a Kannada film - that's news! (Though I know for fact that she has considerable Carnatic training as well).
PBS has sung some very fine numbers in Hindi. The most famous are his duets with LM in Chitragupt's "main bhi ladki hoon". The duet "chandaa se hogaa woh pyaara, nanha sa munna hamaraa", where husband-and-wife are thinking about their would-be child, is a very nice duet.

avr, yes, PBS did mention that film in the above interview.
Naaz, I totally agree with you. Like Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey, he was overshadowed by other lead singers. However you can not imagine a Gemini Ganesh song without a PBS or AM Raja. His rendering, especially the softness he brought to the songs without compromising on the clarity of the lyrics is something today's singers can learn a lot from.
During my last trip to India, I remember watching him on a TV news clipping: it showed him spending hours at the Connemara library almost on a daily basis, clad in pyjama-kurta, with his trademark cap, looking like the stereotypical journalist sporting a pad and pen, a 'jolna' bag, humming and penning some poetry.
I saw a clipping last year in Atlanta, which was part of the 1-hour Hindi entertainment program that's aired every Saturday morning. It talked about the first Tamil Ghazal album by O.S. Arun (leading Carnatic vocalist). It however didn't mention the composer's name. From the above interview in Kumudam's 'TheerA nadi', it appears that it is P. B. Srinivas who has composed these Ghazals. (I should say that it is not clear from the article whether PBS has meerly mentioned OS Arun's attempt as a case in point or whether it was his Ghazal that OS Arun set music to). Amazing isn't it? It is sad to see such novel attempts being completey ignored by the media back in TN.
Looking forward to his latest offering as an MD in Kannada.
With so much talent and an undiminished enthusiasm even at this age, I would love to see him make a comeback of sorts as a lead singer.
Who's going to be the 'fortunate' MD who would get him to sing for his compositions? Makes me wonder, where are those 'philosophical songs', that don't necessarily have to be lip-synched by the heroes of today?

It is good to see tfmers revive this thread on a wonderful human being,
For the Tamil ghazals mentioned, the lyrics and music are indeed composed by PBS. The songs are sung by O.S. Arun. The casette tape of 8 ghazals are produced and marketed by Mudhra Recording Company. I greatly enjoyed all the 8 ghazals for their melody and wondeful lyrics. In particular, the song, Paingkiliye Nee Paadiyum Ennai Viyakavaikindrai Andro is a classic beauty, both for the lyrics and music -- I must have listened to it more than 100 times. And the lyrics are by a person whose mother tongue is not Tamil! Listening to the Tamil ghazals, one wonders why PBS has not been given opportunities to compose songs and music in tamil films. He can easily give established kavingars and music directors healthy competition.
Some tit bits on PBS:
He has composed about 200,000 poems in tamil, telugu, malayalam, kannada, hindi, urdu, sanskrit and english. Sinhalese is not in this list.
He recently released a book called Pranavam, containing selections of his poeme in eight languages.
He has invented a new raaga called Navaneetha Sumasudha.
He is born of Brahmin parents. Simple living and high thinking have been his hallmark. His dietary habits are also very simple.
His mother tongue is telugu.
MSV once mentioned that PBS has not wasted a single song in tamil -- all his songs in tamil are melodius.
He has composed slokas in sanskrit, kannada and other languages, and released them as albums. In many of these albums, he has also composed the music and rendered the slokas.
In an event in Kerala, PBS was with KVM and KJY. There was a request to show how a song is composed. Immediately. PBS composed a song in malayalam which KVM set to music and KJY sang. (Check the web, you can probably find this link which I came across sometime back).
Indeed, PBS is a multifacted personality -- singer, music director, poet, lyricist, scholar, linguist and great human being all rolled into one person. I wonder if there is any person in India who has mastery over these 8 languages.
It will be goid if tfmers in ChennaI can meet him up at the Woodlands restaurant, which he frequents every day, and interview him on a range of topic like his life, work, philosophy, etc, and post these on the tfm web page. It will make interesting and inspiring reading .

Peter Pan,
Thanks for the wonderful and inspiring PBS interview. He can be regularly seen in Drive-In Woodlands in Madras. Regarding the first Tamil Ghazal album 'Mudhal Paarvaiyil', PBS composed and penned the lyrics and sung by O.S.Arun.
I heard SPB saying in an interview that PBS was the First genuine singer to be popular in all the south indian languages simulteneously. TFM music lovers should listen to his hundreds of Kannada songs especially for Dr Rajkumar which are gems and unforgettable.
