Ilayaraaja's voice

  of late IR has not only been singing for nasser but also for a host of others!!! his favourite actors are :)
  
  murali
  rajkiran
  napoleon
  vijaykaanth etc.
  
  
  he almost sings a song in every film of his!
  
  is it because after SPB,KJ he does not find anyone suitable to sing those songs?
  
  also unnikrishnana has not been properly used in thodarum.
  
  IR's recent best in my opinion is 'iniya malargal' from poonthottam.
  
  especially in the line
  
  'karpanayil kooda idhupol kaanamudiyumaa....'
  
  he touches the listener.
  
  and of late he has been singing more of this sad/thathuva kind of paadals.
  
  i have not heard many songs of the type 'poomalaiye'.

  Neels,
  iam amused to note that i had a similiar experience when i listened to 'aathaadi paavada' from poovilangu. though my mom did not explicitly state any reasons, nevertheless she hated that song, she hated raja's voice in general. another thing which i noted is that the older generation have mixed opinions when it comes to SPB or KJY's voice , but when it comes to IR's voice , they unanimously dislike it!!
  atleast that's what i have observed so far based on my experiences in my family.
  
  the popular compalints i receive are that his voice is too rustic like that of a 'gramathaan', nasal and irritating at times.
  
  my top 5 are:
  
  1. thendral vanthu theendum
  
  2. poomalaiye
  
  3. metti oli - all time great song!!!
  
  4. kaadhal oviyam paadum kaaviyam
  
  5. ponnoviyam

  chandru: SPB hasn't sung anything in Nayagan. I guess you mean then paandi cheemayilE, the other versions of which are sung by Kamal.

  Too many people simply dismiss IR's voice, and unfortunately most of these guys know what they're talking about! I've spoken to some pretty talented classical musicians who happen to like film music & especially's IR's music, but shudder to hear his voice. The one common thread in all their criticisms is "apaswara". His nasal pronunciation spoils the rendition of very many good songs.
  eg. Compare "Kalyana Maalai" ( Pudhu Pudhu Artangal ) where IR starts off the first stanza, and thankfully, SPB takes over the rest of the song. IR's rendition of that first stanza is just so stomach-churning...i mean, Kalyana maalaiiiiiiiiii!!! what is that?!!
  i've seen people literally plug their ears when he sings that line! Thank heavens SPB comes to the rescue!
  
  But there are certain songs where i'd never have anyone else singing but IR.
  My fav IR songs include :
  1. intha maan.....this is such an awesome spirited song with great interludes. After i saw this the first time, i almost started believing GA could direct a movie...some of the sequences in that song with Ramarajan & Kanaka are so incredibly authentic....i mean, that song unfailingly takes me back in time...if you've ever been to a village & i mean village as in no-electricity-tent-kottai kind, where you wake up, milk the cow, take a cold dip in the pond, go to the temple, plough the land and lose your heart to the village belle...and i've done all of these...that song captures it so succintly.
  There are frontal camera shots of Ramarajan & Kanaka holding hands on top of the old broken village temple...when i saw that the first time, i said, God this guy sure knows his stuff! been there, done that.
  truly an awesome IR number.
  
  2. vilaku vechcha nerathilay ( mundani muduchchu )
  - Bagyaraj totally wasted this song by playing it at the very beginning when the titles are shown.
  So there's no picturization at all :-(
  this is one of those radio-classics where the audio version is much better than the video one.
  
  3. kadhal oviyum ( alaigal oivadillai )
  - i was in my teens when i saw this one. real timeless classic.
  
  4. poomalaye - mani's done a nice job picturizing this one.

  hi folks ,
  
  why nobody is able to remember the greatest hit of IR. 'janani janani' in thai mookambigai.
  this song was supposed to be sung by KJY and IR was just singing the track but on hearing the song fully sung by IR the prod,dir and everyone there were taken aback and struck for few minutes. and atlast they unanimously decided that IR should sing that song. infact i would add some more related to this song. only after this film he became so pious towards mokambiga and from that year onwards he gave up smoking,drinking and eating NV. this one song made him a saint.

  Nobody in this world is as shown such a kind of versatility like the great Ilayaraja.Having come from a rural background , where there is little exposure,Ilayaraja has come up in life with utmost self-confidence and dedication to music.We tamilians should be proud of our Ilayaraja.Folk..Carnatic..pop, rap..hindustani,jugal bandhi,symphony ..you name it ..you get it from one and only from raja.Nobody can score a background film music as he does.His background score will carry the entire emotion of the scene the director wants.For eg Mouna Ragam ,Nayagan,Anjali,Apporva Sagothargal......The person whom I most admire is ILAYARAJA

  Well said. It is his ability to compose ranging from "dapponghutthu" to "symphony", both with the necessary rhythm and melody in them, is breathtakingly amazing to me. I am not sure whether there is any other composer who has done such a broad range of music styles. Obviously, this would need a good command of a range of instruments and the corresponding scales. It makes sense when IR says "everything is music and is notes and scales; I am simply manipulating this in different instruments" which tells me about his scientific understanding of music.
  
  Folks, one of his best songs sung by him is "Kan Malargazhin Azhaippithazh.." with Janaki, in film "Thaiponghal". A well recorded CD containing this song is: Ilayaraja sings for you, by EMI, CDPMLP 5330. It also contaings another good one sung by him, "Samakkozhi Kuvuthamma.." in film "Ponnu Oorukku Pudusau"

  His voice is definitely not a melodious one. But, no singer can make some songs, better than what IR did to that.
  Eg:-
  Janani, Janani in Thai Moohambigai and

  Hey guys Have you heard the songs from Annan (hope i spelled it right. Souple of songs sung by IR, the music is just phenonmenal. I have observed that most of the songs which he sings the music is just of this world Viz Raja Raja (Agni nat.), April mayille (Idhayam), Valli Valli ena vandal (Deiva Vakku) and so on. Annan is a recent release 1998 March. there is a song sung by IR, Alla marathu Kuyile .... this song is just great. But i must admit that this song sung by any body like SPB or KJY or HH would have done little more justice to that song.
