karthi,
The speciality of IR's voice is it's expressiveness and his pronunciation. He sings for people for whom his voice fits (like nasser, JR)leaving those rare "uLLukkuLLa chakravarthi" which didn't suit rajnikant.

Everybody is coming out with justifiable ideas. As you guys said IR's voice is good for village based title songs or for Nasser or Raj Kiran.
But somehow he sings a song in a movie and spoils his name. It happened recently in the movie "Kumbakonam Gopalu" where it says IR has spoiled all the songs by using his Mookil paadum kural. It is better he stops singing.
You can add this in the list:
Vilakku vecha nerathile maaman vandhan - Mundhanai mudichu. Lovely song for the situation.

Methinks it'll me much better if Raja reduces his singing in Many of his movies, restrict himself to only those songs like pathos. like losing the mother, or something like that. Endha padathila amma sethuttalum, oppari vekka Raja Vandhuduvar.

Sangathil Paadatha Kavithai is IMO the best of IR. It was originally composed for Malayalam by IR and he reused it in Tamil in the film 'Auto Raja' (what a title!!!)
The song has very good lyrics and the voices of IR and SJ rule. In one of the interludes, IR almost in a whisper recites the line "Anthippor Kaanada Ilamai Aadattum En Kaigalil, Sinditthen Sendoora Idazhgalil, Sindi Then Paiginda Uravai" and SJ responds after understanding the 'Sledai' with an appreciative laughter.
I think IR scored as a singer in this one.
My other favorites:
Poomalaye (Pagal Nilavu)
Aathadi Paavada (Pon Vilangu) ...[ My mom didn't like it and would ask me to put it off whenever I played this song... she thought it was 'pondy'!]
Thendral Vandhu Theendum (Avatharam)
Premam Premadi Priyam from Aruvadai Naal
Malare Pesu Mauna Mozhi (Geetanjali, I think)
Appanendum Ammaiyendum (though the tune wasn't great, IR's rustic rendering made a good impact in this title song of Guna!

How can you people forget the song,
"Sorgamae endraalum adhu nammoora pola varumaa?"
(some Rama Rajan, Gouthami movie)
This song was quite a good hit.
I don't think any other singer would have done better than IR in this particular song. And, as someone said, among all MDs voice, IRs is the best. But, again, as so many people said, he can restrict himself singing only certain songs, which suits him, like naan thedum sevvandi, thendral vandhu theendum podhu, sorgamae endraalum

The film is 'Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandu'.
The line 'Tamizh POl InithidumA aaa...' is superbly rendered with the required 'Gamakas'. A good example of a classical raga (Hamsanaadam) used in folkish style (IR is a master in that). The lyrics is all kitsch though!
Along the same lines is 'Naan Thedum Sevvandhip Poovidhu', a big hit in those days, again by the same pair, IR and SJ. Here, the raga is Hindolam.
The above song reminds me of another song in Hindolam, 'Darisanam Kidaikkada' from Alaigal Oyvathillai. (the amateurish, non-professional rendering of the song added a realistic touch to the situation)

IR has done a pretty decent job in 'iniya malargal' song in poonthottam. the song is said to have been composed in the raga ahirbhairavi.
it is a touching song. for u'r pleasure it is at

As an example of a song made unlistenable
by IR's voice, check out "Aagaya Thamarai"
from "Nadodi Pattukaran". The song itself is so so..

My top 5 IR songs:
1 Kaadhal Oviyam - Alaigal Oyvathillai
there's a timeless appeal to this song, I still get so involved with this decades-old gem
2 Intha maan - Karagattakaran
I personally would rate this among the top 10 TFM songs for its wonderful orchestration, spirited singing & great interludes
3 Thendral Vandhu - Avatharam
don't think there should be much dispute in this being IR's best, encapsulates an entire story with a gamut of passions and emotions.. IR at his peak. I remember it was mentioned somewhere that Karthik Raja had a good part to play in crafting this song. if so, he's got phenomenal potential, unleashed yet..
4 Ponnoviyam - Kazhugu (or Thee?) - the humming in the interlude is simply magnificient, incomparable in TFM, IMO..
5 Aalamarathu kuyile - Annan - I felt that this was the song that he most enjoyed in recent times; the feeling translates itself beautifully
throughout the song, Sujatha a perfect foil
There are many other classics in his voice.. I personally feel he could have resisted singing all those "sogam, saavu" numbers and sound repetitive and boring.

suresh,
KR did the arrangement for thenral vandhu theendum bOdhu.

Shankar: I know that this has been mentiond in other threads before... but I find it hard to believe. KR has not done anything else even close to this song to change my belief.
Suresh: intha maan & spirited singing? hmm...We have different notions of spirited I think.
Dev: I feel that aagaya thaamrai is a good tune, made ordinary by IR's singing.
I like IR's voice in a lot of songs.. my personal favourite being: poo maalyE thOL sEravA.
IMO his voice has changed a lot over the years and I prefer the voice of alaigaL Oivathillai, ponnu oorukku puthusu tims than his present voice.

I thought I'll share this with you.. This is a list of 'new' IR songs that I recorded recently. I liked this collection, though I had listened to these songs in various albums before.
1) ennai thaalaatta varuvaLA - KM. IMHO he is more expressive than HH in this song.. Mayb as YGeetha pointed out in some other thread, HH-Oda expresiveness-a enakku purinjukka theeriyalayO ennavO.
2)nillaatha veNNila - aanazhagan. A nice number and decently rendered by IR.
3) aalamaraththu kiLiyE - Annan
4)vayasapuLLa - "
5)thOL mEla thOL mEla - poo mani
6)oru aalam poova - punniyavathi
7) ennOda ulagam vEru - The other KM :-)
8)iniya malaragaL - poonthOttam
9)kadha pOla - veera thaalaattu. intha maathiri sOga paattu avar evvaLavu vEnaalum paadalaam.
10) amman pugazhai paada - kannaaththaaL. Very serene song by IR. Nothing spl. or new perhaps, but I liked it.
11) gaana kuyilE - poonjOlai. I liked IR's solo better, since it didn't have Bava ;-).

Ravi,
i sincerely recommend that u include the song 'iniya malargal pookum' from the film poonthottam.
IMO, it is the best from raja in recent times. it has been rendered soulfully. it has been set in ahirbhairavi/chakravaagam raga base. the background music is also good. one of the very few from raja that has impressed me in recent times.

I guess the golden age of his voice was also the 80s ;-)

One small correction: amman pugazhai is from kannaaththaaL and not kadavul. I have corrected it in the listing also.

Hi IR FAN!
'Poo Maalaiye' shows up in the beginning itself.
Well Guys!
I accept that all of those songs you've mentioned are really good ones. Especially, 'Kaadhal Oviyam', 'Janani Janani', 'Poo Maalaiye'.
But inspite of my liking for these songs, I still hold to it that IR lacks bhaavam. That's what I'm wondering how could he sound good without bhaavam, which does very much. You feel it's refreshing sometimes when you hear voices like IR. Maybe his duets would do a better collection than his solos.
And again, please don't ever compare him with Malaysia Vasudevan. Malaysia Vasudevan has had such a nice voice.
Eg:
Alli Thantha Bhoomi
Aagaaya Gangai
Aasai Nooru Vagai Vazhvil Nooru
Indha Minminikku
Aayiram Malargale Malarungal etc.
Lastly, I cannot think of any other number by kamal than 'Panneer Pushpangale'. I would say that Kamal could sing, but he was not a singer.

nTV,
I'm sorry to have made such a sweeping statement about IR. Certainly I would not have started to hate if I had not heard the following song of his:
'Kaadhal Enbadhu...' and especially the 3rd line which goes as
'Appanum Aathalum....' - I feel like puking whenever I hear these lines, very sorry for my language. I feel as an MD who does justice to Isai he should have at least and at best changed the lyrics of that line. I'm sorry again for my language.
