anyone heard this gem from IR "thenna marathila thenral adikkudhu nandhavana kuyilae" song..from some Sridevi + real monkey movie. IR+PS ore sangeetha mazhaithaan!

the best song sung by IR is 'metti oli kaatrodu' from metti. many of u have not mentioned this song in your list. this is one of the most soul-stirring songs i have ever heard in TFM. courtesy
ramaswamy gireesan's site. the song is set in jog raaga. the orchestration is superb. no support from SJ except in chorus. its IR all the way.
melody+orchestration+creativity+voice+.....
u have everything in this song.
and mahendran claims that he never used to do anything special to inspire IR. he just used to explain the situation, that's all. lucky guy!
but he deserves it. most of mahendran-IR combos have been classics, examples that have been reused
by many directors like mani and vasanth in later films, and taught as lessons in film institutes.
notice the opening humming combo of IR and SJ. it elevates the listener to a new plane.this and janani are the best from IR. poomalaiye from pagal nilavu follows closely.
i expect to hear more solos like metti from IR in the near future.

Vijay:
Metti had great music by IR. The song Sandha Kavigal is just great. Who has sung this song? Mahendran gave a lot of importance to visuals, which made the experience of watching his films enjoyable. The picturisation of Paruvame from Nenjathai Killathe is another example. Is he still an active director ?

Mahendran is coming with a low budget movie called sasanam with ArvindSwamy. Incidentally he booked IR as MD, but as the costs escalated turned to BalaBharathi who I thought gave a decent album in Amaravathi.

Isaignani has given beautiful songs like as the ones discussed in this section. Apart from those classical ones, what about the most recent romantic melodies of his? Like,"Alamarathu kuyile kuyile thunai unakku irukka irukka", "Vayasupulla vayasupulla vaadi kovilukku..", "Ponnin Thiruvonam thiru naalum vanthalo mangala nallo, thullum thalir meni kulir choodi kondallo malligai poovo, kathal pattu sollum kootukaari"(Kavalai Padathe Sagothara), "Un paakathila oru poovu vachha" and "Chinna manikaaga" both in Sendhuram...Raja vukku vayasu aga aga romanceum athigamagi konde poguthu....superb raja....

vijay & others:
'metti oli kaatrOdu' is marvelous melody by IR. opening 'thana-nana; thana-nana; thana-nana-na' la SJ will take u to ...... IR'Oda magic can be enjoyed when the instruments blend at that point with a mild rythm and lead u to the theme! Its one of the master piece.
After this song, please listen to 'siru ponmaNi asaiyum'.. its part-2 of metti oli I feel!
Also, 'EriyilE elandha maram, en thangachchi vachcha maram' [karaiyellaam shenbaga-p-poo] ..
Man..certainly that songs deserves a better recognition.. Listen how he build that song.. its great!

rajave than padalgaLil irundhu ithanai edhirpathrukka mattar! avaLavu pughzaram!
ezhai chol ambalam eradhu endru terindum indha karuthukkalai solla vizhaigiren.
first of all, raja has that inherent desire of hearing his compositions in his own voice and that is why you would find some (on second thoughts many) songs being sung by him which do not figure in the movie. ( i am surprised that srikanth srinivasan considers idayam oru kovil version by raja great even after hearing balu pour his voice into that number.)
there seems to be a consensus that his voice is ideal for a rustic environment with a man vasanai and i fully agree with it. but when tries to extend that strength to an urbane song or a western number he falls flat esspecially on high notes. he has a flat rendering of most of his songs and whenever he tries gamakas or sangathis, they come out 50% as a result, edho nerudal. listen to raja's version of nanaga naan illai thaye in thoongade tambi thoongade and you will get a feeling of monotone. for those who say that even that is great, i have nothing to say. my only grouse is that a person who gives such wonderful melodies and brilliant orchestrations does not set himself high standards for singing.

I am not a big fan of IR's singing but I did like the way he sang Indirarum chandirarum (Avathram), Janani janani, Metti oli (metti) - these were fit to be sung by him only.
But I have observe that he often loses breath while singing - this was clear in "oru kanam oru yugam aaga" (janaki and IR), in the charanam, in the song "Yaaro yar yaaro" from Ullasam again in the charanam. Maestro's voice is ok when one is listening from a dstance but on a walkman, the places where he loses breath are perceptible.

Hi
Though i have disliked IR for singing some good songs...i have liked some of his songs very much
like
ORU KAVIYAM....(aruvadai naal) I don't know how many of you heard this song ..it's a great song
poomalaiye (pagal nilavu )
and
nethu oruthara ....(pudupaatu ) though ,like this song more for the music rather his voice ..

Hi,
I, too, am not a great admirer of IR for his voice, although I, too, like most of you, admire IR for his great music. But, the following songs are really good and had their effect only because it was sung by him.
"Kannammaa... kaadhal ennum kavidhai solladi... undhan pinju mozhiyinilae... manam kollai adippadhum yaen?" (Some movie...)
"naan yerikkarai melirundhu... yettu dhisai paarthirundhu..." (Chinnathayee - the same song was sung by KJY also, but still I like both the versions because of a lovely "man vaasanai" music.
"oru kanam... oru yugamaaga..." (Naadodi thendral)
"En thaai enum koyilai..." (Aranmanai kili)
"Naan thedum sevvandi poovidhu..." (some Karthik movie. This is one of IR's best as a singer as well as a MD. It wouldn't have been any better even if singers of the calibre of SPB or KJY had sung this melody).
However, I didn't like his voice in these :
"ullathila chakkaravarthy..." (Panakkaaran - both the song (includes music and lyrics) and the voice were horrible)
"kalyaana maalai..." (Puthu puthu arthangal - SPB's version was wonderful and IR's was just the opposite)
The song "eduthu naan vidava..." was actually ok. Both SPB's and IR's voice fitted for the situation. Although, it was not a great song, IR's voice was tolerable in that.

Hi folks!
I can somehow never accept IR as a singer at all. There's nothing special in his voice.
Ippadi vena sollalaam:
Bhavame illama paadi hit panradhu avarukke uriththaana vishayam. But then, music-e ellam pannumpothu naama mattum edhukku varinjukkittu bhavathoda paadanumnu vitturuvar pola.
The only song I like him sing is 'Then Paandi Cheemaiyile'.
I also like the song 'Thenna Marathula' from 'Lakshmi' starring Sridevi because of its tempo.

karthi,
I can somehow never accept IR as a singer at all. There's nothing special in his voice
that indeed was a sweeping statement! there are few songs that would not have been as good if sung by anyone but him.
1. Janani Janani from 'thaai mogaambigai'. an excellent, rather his best song i would say. but, i have to accept that he had a kind of funny pronunciation of sanskrit words like 'peetahm' etc.
2. kaadhal oviyam.. paadhum kaaviyam from 'alaigal oyvathillai'. his singing is kind of etched in my mind that i can't accept if anyone else were to sing it now! needless to say, this song has very good tune, especially the interludes.
there are quite a few like these. agreed that sometimes he chose to spoil some good songs, but his is definitely not hate-right-from-the-heart kind of voice. though irrelevent, i would like to make the following observation: his voice is much better than any other MD's voice.

Actually this is a nice topic..thanx to whoever started it..
There are some really good IR numbers..
1.poomaalaye(pagal nilavu)
2.aathaadi paavade (some murali movie..kuyili bathing scene..)
3.Idhayam oru kOvil..
4.Janani Janani..(there are n songs like this..he usually starts any show with a devotional number ,which is mostly very good..)
5.Kaadhal Oviyam(Alaigal Oiyvathillai)..I wonder if anyone else's voice would have suited for this song..
6. Naan thEdum sevanthi poovithu....what a song..
7. Thendral vandhu theendum (avatharam)
8. Thaalaattu maariponathEn..(unnai naan sandithEn or sth like that.. this is a good song..but he struggles a lot in the high pitch..)
9. Sangathil Paadaathe kavithai..( i never got a chance to listen to a proper version of this song..i heard to some old thEnjipOne record ..it was still good..)
there are many more..there are some songs which I liked better in IR's voice..like the one in KaMaa
Yennai thaalatta varuvaalo..( i some how find hariharan's voice dull)
But there are some painful songs of his..all cliche...sung for some sad occasions..
his voice suits for some special kind of songs only..for e.g. take poomalaye , kaadhal oviyam ,naan thedum sevanthi..etc...
his voice is not melodious..his voice is characterised by a low pitch and kind of pain in it....some times low pitch has a very good effect when the bgm has fundoo bass (e.g. kaadhal oviyam)
I think except for some special songs..other singers like malaysia, may be kamal..would have equally done well
obviously there are n better and talented singers..

Nothing special in IR's voice but you know there is something magic in his voice( I feel ). Something in his voice makes one listen to his songs. One will not only enjoy his songs but will get involved. Janani Janani is too good for this kind.
In archives I dont remember which thread, but sombody has listed his songs ( more than 100 ). Just listen to those songs. Without much speciality in his voice, with so odd voice unlike regular singers, those are really great.
I like IR version of Ennai Thalaatta varuvaalo than Hariharan's version. Though there are more singers, you cannot ignore IR
