Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Actually hansde hansde (siri siri) has started to grow on me. But at the end the jokes in the songs do sound pretty stale and used, 'cos we've heard most of them. The tune of course has been composed well and is catchy. And as Ehsaan mentioned earlier, Kamal's emoting means a lot to a situational song like this. He's simply amazing in this song!
I feel he's gonna make a HUGE difference to all the songs!

guys, calling a music album alien etc is not correct. I dont know what you guys mean by alien ?
Cine music is based on a given situation often dicated by the director, composers are bound by this factor, and 3 people who are the composers are talented so just calling it alien etc is absured. did anyone notice all the songs were original in nature. also singing and pronounciations were perfect to the core...
People has right to post what ever they want to , but for some reason I did not expect this from Kiru:),
imho, it is a novel attempt to satify 3 sets of audience..Hindi, Tamil and Kamal :)..
it is done well......

OOPS, missed...in c&p.
though few songs reminded me of old songs at the first go. Now after hearing them couple of times I began to feel the songs were original in nature, also singing and pronounciations were perfect to the core.

I like Africa Kaatupuli and fast version of Kadavul Paadhi. Kamal has done a superb job in Kadavul Paadhi song.
As per melodies, I would say it is missing. My favourite melody of this year is, 'aathoram kaatukulla', sung by Srinivas for a tamil album.

Guys..guys..I did not say Aalavandhan songs sound alien (read my words again) (STS..confused/twisted mine). Actually, I was the first to post that Aalavandhan is good and SEL are a welcome addition to TFM (this is quoted in the front pages of newtfmpage.com as well. Even srikanth seems to have forgotten this conversation).
I was talking about the general trend (am i not right ?) . And just making a pitch to Ehsaan about pure tamil lyrics/pronounciation, folk/carnatic music based songs etc. Thanks guys..now all those requests of mine are lost in this confusion :( I atleast hope Ehsaan noticed it.
Please note I do not post impulsively. I really wanted to frame a good post because I did not want to waste Ehsaan's time. I purposely kept the post on a very high level, without getting into the specifics. And I do not see anything wrong in my requests to Ehsaan.
(Maran, I was also the first to mention the movie vikram, in the context of aalavandhAN).

BTW, I heard the Corrs song and the DCH song. I dont think the notes are exactly the same. Though the song format (rhythm etc) looks similar. Yesterday, I was watching Riverdance (Irish dance show) on TV and I could see what Ehsaan was talking about (repetitive pentatonic scale). This is one of the reasons why it is easy to identify a celtic melody.

Kiru no no i never forget things so easily.:)
The overall sound of the music is getting very 'alien'. ,
I dont agree to this at all, what is "alien" music ...? how can music be called as alien?
today's world cannot define this, .imho, Music of 2000 is not small to one region. if you get a an idea in west, it just means that the person in the west got the idea first, but it does not restrict the person in the east to think in the same lines. I have mentioned this, when you see some similarties in the score, 75% of the time is coincidence. My same old example, "ulagam endrum ore mozi" (1950s) old msv/tkr song, but "by the rivers of bablone" sounds excaltly the same in pallvi, this time we got it first.
for eg: PhilCollins uses triton, most of our mds today use triton, same sounds, same kind of environment, there is every possibility to get similar ideas. on one can deny it.
I requset Ehsaan to comment on this, this will help us can get a first hand opinion from a composer who is in the limelight.

Srikanth..I respect your views on music 'sounding' alien. Yes, it is very subjective, relative. To IR, using bass lines, chords, counterpoints are okay. To ARR using reggae beats, soul rhythms is..To Ehsaan even electronica is okay..It does not matter to me what musical genre is getting borrowed or adapted to the Indian situation. The total effect should be Indian. I dont think I can express better than this. I dont want or not in a position to dictate specifcs to pro musicians..I just wanted to express my desire as a genuine fan of music that is all.
I hope one day just like we identify a celtic melody today, the rest of the world will be able to identify an Indian rAga/scale. Wouldn't that make us proud ?

Kiru, believe me I hear you!... things will change. There are many things! …I have observed,
People often identify a raga for a film song!, Can we call anything as a raga!, I doubt this… raga is not mere usage of notes in the ascend or descend.. We just do a pseudo mapping of raga based on notes, that’s all. When I was young (still I am -: ) I use to map anything to a raga. Later when I understood the essence of what ragas is, I just stopped this practice.
This is one of main cause of thinking a song is not (South) Indian. Our music has to change!..it is changing!, I am eagerly waiting to see people map a raga to a song from alavandhan
btw: is Ehsaan still visiting here :-)

kiru's requests are genuine ones. Try to understand what he meant. ("I purposely kept the post on a very high level, without getting into the specifics")
"The overall sound of the music is getting very 'alien'"
By saying that kiru actually meant music sounding more "western" than "Indian" day-by-day, which i feel is true.
(somebody, don't again ask to define western and Indian...again!? (pun intended))
:)

Srikanth..Obviously what you are talking needs more elaboration. It would be nice if you could tell us in more details on what a rAgam is from the point of view of composing using a rAgam. (see Balaji's article in the IR new albums thread)(KS, I put all the stuff I wanted to reply to you here !!. Now you know my views. I will still reply to you in the other thread)

Hello talking about film music sounding alien because of outside influences in the music. Theres so many more people there who are lsitening to film music thanks to the turn the music has taken and the fusion that has emerged.I used to listen to Hindi music as a kid all the lovley old melodies that my mother used to listen to. After that in the late 70 's to late 80's i think Hindi film music went through the dark ages. The I heard RD Burmans 1942 A Love Story that was absolutley gorgeous !!!! And then I heard Roja and I said wow this guy is making me relate to Hindi film music !!!! Considering that i met ARR before he did Roja we went out for dinner and we talked about gear and keyboards he like us suffers from a disease called G.A.S. ( Gear Acquisition Syndrome ). What did Rehman do ? He amalgamated all his influences into creating music that he believed in . Wether it was a Rag Jog with an R&B Backbeat or a dreamy soundtracky kind of song . We just follow the same thing . Like I said I do not listen to Hindi Music except for what ARR does . Like me there are millions who today are relating more to the music thanks to the form it has taken. I think that is definitely progressive. I dont think Rahman or us for that matter fuse the styles of music because we dont have a choice or whatever reason , it really is what we believe in. I am sure at one time or the other ARR musit have dreamed of touring the world with a progressive hard rock band or play keyboards for Micheal Jackson. I would love to play the blues in little clubs all over the U.S.A. The very fact that we are composing music for the film industry and that people like our work and want to work with us is that we are creating music that we believe in above all we like our own music and compose it and create with full commitment.ARR has taken the music to an audience that once nevere listened to film music.Today the 3 of us SEL are comfortable doing films also were still doing jingles and advertising , Loy and I are part of Instant Karma that does The Dance Masti series , Loy and I play in a funk R$B band , Shankar was on the road with Shakti so look at it from our part of view we are musicians we are not the cliched MD's.
At the same time if you hear Shool we did a tune called Main Ayee Hoon UP Bihar Lootnein which is Bihari Navtanki type song which no one believed was composed by us.
Whatever one may so about " Indianness " I think ARR and us have brought in a degree of freshness into film music.
Cheers
Ehsaan

Ehsaan,
I'm glad your enthusiasm hasn't been dampened by reactions by the media or the public. Whether it be a plea to sound like someone else, to sound more Indian or to sound the same as you did in "Aalavandhaan" in all your future efforts, I hope you guys will resist and keep innovating and growing. I believe that you will do so after having read your spirited posts. Good luck. A hearty welcome to Thamizh Film Music and this forum.

Ehsaan , thanks for the reply,
in simple words
can we conclude music should "sound fresh and original", everything else comes next.
Many of us know Loy did the opening score for doordharhan news and some pronab roy election programes! (If i remember it right), it has some nice tabla work, I remember asking him if he had learnt tabla, he told me it was his ears!...he told often he learns different forms of music thru his ears and tries to think in a differnt way! and adaptes them in his scores. Which is very true, it was good tip for any upcoming composer :-)
