Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Ehsaan, We are obviously thrilled to have a celebrity amidst us :) I have no doubt your music will be lapped up by the young generation and others alike. This forum has critically looked at many music composers and have reported for eg. about IlaiyarAja's usage of a Mozart Symphony for a folk song and ARR's usage of a rhythm loop from Peter Gabriel's Passion in Jeans . Though many of us really want to listen to good songs some of us are also concerned about the 'westernisation' of our music. (Especially, people like me who have lived/living abroad) It is not we are against using synths, electronica or musical techniques like counterpoint, fugue etc. The overall sound of the music is getting very 'alien'. First, it all started with the change of rhythms, then came the english words, then the accent/pronounciation and so on. Not sure where we will end. I am not even sure whether the singers know what they are singing.
So now we have found you :) A real doer. ...Someone who can really change things I just have to get these off my chest :).. Please consider using
1) singers who know the language and pronounce well
2) can we avoid english as much as possible ? I know this language plays a major role in our lives but lets not use it for snob value..If I want I can go back to my Loreena Mckennit or Sarah Mclaghlan or whatever
3) folk/tribal melodies/rhythms..it would be pity if we lost these
4) Use classical rAgam/scales more often to give the native feel and not turn centuries of art form developed in this country into just a novelty ..that elicits a ''how so cute" or "nice ..ethnic" comments.
Ehsaan..I was a little concerned when you quoted your musical influences :) but recovered after you mentioned RD and Shankar-Jaikishen :). I am sure you will consider our request while enjoying your creative/artistic freedom/impulse. And that our country's rich musical heritage will be safe in the hands of amazingly talented people like you.

My remarks might sound hard, but thats what I feel.
Compared to Harris Jeyaraj, you seem to be original. But as kiru mentioned above, all songs from Aalavandhaan sound alien. You have gone one step ahead of ARR in the sense that your songs sound like an english album and I don't think they will be remembered for a long time in TN.
Melody content is almost missing excepting in 'Un Kuzhanthaikku' but again the lyrics is really poor. I listened to them all many times and nothing makes that much impact. You will be better off having your songs fold/carnatic based.
You might have listened to RDB/SJ. But please listen to IR too.
Good Luck.
kiru,
Your suggestions are good. But I thini

Actually I saw this message from Amblin in this same thread first and then reposted it once nobody noticed it. I personally feel there is a definite case of inspiration.

Ok, regarding my earlier mail that the music of "Kadavul Paadhi" being similar to Goldsmith's "Link", here it is. Remember both are psychopath-on-the-loose movies. Try listening to it.

Guess one of the trio must be a big Goldsmith fan!

Nope, this is not the case of Anu Malik'ish or Sandeep Chowta'ish copying as we call it. Its the same Ehsaan had mentioned before...that it surprises him when they find pieces similar to theirs, out of coincidence!
Somehow, when Ehsaan says its a coincidence (on Paddy Mcarthy and Link), I really want to believe him...I dunno what makes me want to believe him!
And yes as Ehsaan puts, there's no melodic similarity at all. Its the progression which is very similar and thats when I could term it as a sublte inspiration...you listen to something, somewhere....and even subconsciously it tends ot stick to your memory and would come out in some form or other if you are a composer. For most of us, it might never come out in any form at all, but for Ehsaan it sure would.
This is not be taken as what Nadeem (Shravan) had said...that they had heard Abdel Majeed Abdullah's Arabic number 'ahibbak laih' in some hotel and it seems it stuck to his mind so much that it came out as 'dil ne yeh kaha' - a mirror replica of the original! Thats nonsense.

The previous message of Ambleen, which logically is very right as even he wonders if its a coincidence!

The circus-like psychopath music featured in the trailer....reminds me of another music from an English movie. Its called the "Link". Anybody heard of it? The movie is abt a psychopath pet monkey gone loose. The theme is very alike!
Could Alavandhan's theme been modelled after this or could it be coincidence? I suspect it is the former because both Link and Alavandhan involves psyhcopaths on the loose and creating havoc. Besides, its music is by Jerry Goldsmith. I don't think anybody involved in film music(any language or country) can be unfamiliar abt this globally influential person.

Also, Ehsaan, did Kamal tell you about a certain N S Krishnan when you started work on 'siri siri' (hansde hansde) number? 'cos as far as I know, there's only one another song, in tamil, which is based on the concept of laughter with sounds of laughing interspersed all thru the song. And NSK (a very popular comedian) was very popular for such a song which came way long back in tamil.
Just wondering if Kamal had told you folks about him!
Also, if that Link issue had upset you, I apologise, with all my heart. Maybe I should rephrased the way I had put across that message in the first place.

>>>all songs from Aalavandhaan sound alien. You have gone one step ahead of ARR in the sense that your songs sound like an english album <<<
STS ...though you have a right to your views, I think you have made an early judgement and maybe not in your right senses...what Kiru was speaking about was the perverted use of English in TFM...."Aalavandhaan" -the melodies are definitely a fusion...I dont understand what makes them sound alien....I am sure that many would disagree with you..."Poruppu" is a beautiful number though you can discern Vairamuthu's cliched "algorhythms" as someone here had aptly put it....when I heard it on Raaga.com...it didnt have the impact it had when I heard it on my stereo system. So please dont dismiss something different so early...

Sounds ALIEN? Gosh, is that what being "DIFFERENT" is now called? :)) Well, this is my personal point as well but I beleive there are two type of songs. One in which a listener will instantly like the tune after hearing it the first time itself. The second type takes repeated listening to get used to. I am sure everyone is aware of this.
AR Rahman scored big on the first type in his earlier days. All of his songs became hits because many liked it after the first hearing itself. Lately however, most of his songs needs to be listened to a few times and THEN only it begins to take the form of a masterpiece.
Asked in an interview about this, ARR said that you will like some songs on the first hearing itself if you have heard that tune somewhere else before, suggesting that you have gotten used to it and it feels like slipping your feet into and old and comfortable pair of shoes.
When we heard songs from Thenali for instance, many didn't like it and dismissed it as one of ARR's worst but now after some time we find the songs are above average.
Coming back to S-E-L trio, I felt that only two of the songs caught my attention on the first hearing...one is the superbly catchy "Kadavul Paathi" (which actually reminded me of the tittle song in VIkram where Kamal raps) and "Un Azhagekke Thaai Poruppu" (which, don't ask me to explain WHY but reminded me of "Kanekke Mai Azhagu" from Puthiya Mugham")
"Afrika Kaathe Puli" and "Siri Siri Siri" eventually GREW on me and I find myself humming them both while working.
Overall, I would say that Aalavandhan in a pretty good effort and to dismiss it just because it sounds ALIEN is inappropriate! Give it time!

Ehsaan, you might to want to visit the "request to amateur composers " topic too..there are many talented amateurs here who upload their own music and discuss it..maybe you could pass a few comments on those works..also check out the archives for some interesting topics..
