that "rishaba" is a kind of pep when KJY sings "kaaLai raasi aen raasi". very nice song. brings back memories of my childhood days:
1) ilangai oliparappukoottuthaapanam,
2) vivid barathiyin varthaga oLiparappu
3) thamizh teacher-idam rishabam aendraal aennavendru kaettu adhai thamizhil ozhungaaga aezhudha theriyaamal vangina adi
4) 'devi theatre', 'kalpana theatre' road side announcement for the film with kamal and asingamaana jayachitra posters (raj adikka varaadheenga)
btw when it comes to M.N.Nambiar people's behaviour (atleast in my town) was totally opposite. when they see him on screen (esp. in MGR movies) they threw chappals on the screen. but when they see him in person they kind of revered him. no one dared (even wanted) to call him with a name other than "guru saami". A rare tribute to a legendary person. I am yet to see him sitting/standing in slumped posture, even a few years back when i saw him in railway station he was on his way back from sabarimalai (he was then in his late 70s or early 80s i guess) he was chating with people very fondly sitting erect.

Song of the Day: neela vaNNak kaNNaa vaadaa from mangaiyar thilagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/neelavanna.rm
- A sweet lullaby, sung by R.Balasaraswathi. Lyrics by Maruthakasi. Music by S.Dakshinamoorthy (?). Balasaraswathi's voice is so soothing in this song. I've been playing this song now and my cranky child went to sleep after listening to it a few times!
- Lyrics for the song in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/neelavanna_kannaa.html
For such a song, Maruthakasi could have gotten away with meaningless lyrics. But he didn't. He starts off with a catchy pallavi that looks like a nursery rhyme, but fills the charanams with his charming poetry.
vaanampaadi gaanam kEttu
vasantha kaala thendral kaatril
thEn malargaL sirikkum kaatchi
selvan thuyil neengum kaatchi
chinnanchiru thilagam vaiththu
singaaramaai puruvam theetti
ponnaalaana nagaiyum pootta
kaNNaa, konjam porumai kaattu!
- We discussed Balasaraswathi when her song "malligaippoo jaathi roja" was put up in SOTD. http://newtfmpage.com/forum/1601.20880.03.21.22.html

When I was a kid, this song was a regular feature at Navarathiri kolus. My mom learnt this song from one of the maamis and used to sing this to us when she used to apply oil for our dreadful weekend oil bath ritual.

Thanks for this caressing lullaby, in the silken voice of Ravu Balasaraswathi.
Vaidya Films’ Mangaiyar Thilagam- 1955 was produced by A.C.Pillai, and directed by L.V.Prasad. Based on a Marathi story, it was a moving tale of an elder brother (S.V.Subbiah), and his wife (Padmini) who shower love and affection upon the younger brother, who grows up to become Sivaji. As he is much younger to Subbiah, he worships Padmini as his mother and his deeply attached to her. However, his wife (M.N.Rajam) gradually starts resenting his affection for Padmini, and the family’s tranquility is soon lost.
I think Padmini is childless, and sings this song to M.N.Rajam’s baby. That accounts for the tinge of sorrow that this lullaby is laced with, and for the line ‘Pillai illa kaliyum theera’. Balasaraswathi was probably the best choice for this song, and this ranks among the best ever lullabies in tfm.
The other songs in the film were:
unmai anbu endrum anaindhidaada deepamaai vilangum- K.Jamunarani & Chorus (Maruthakasi)
kandukkonden naan kandukkonden- T.Kamala (Puratchidasan)
oru murai thaan varum kathai sollai koodum- Jikki (Kannadasan)
ketta pennmani- (a parody of nalla pennmani)- S.C.Krishnan, T.V.Rathinam, S.J.Kantha, S.V.Ponnusami, R.Chellamuthu & Vadivambal (Udumalai Narayana Kavi)
nee varavillaiyenil aadharavuedhu- Madhavapethi Sathyam (Maruthakasi)
purinthu kollavillai- S.C.Krishnan & Ratnamala (Maruthakasi)
Among the dozen Tamil films for which he scored music, Mangaiyar Thilakam was perhaps the best album by Susarla Dakshinamoorthi (born 11.11.21) Neela vanna kanna vaada and Nee varavillaiyenil aadharavedhu are enough to ensure a hallowed place for him in the annals of tfm.
bb, the version that I have has a short flute prelude?

Song of the Day: sudum kaNNeer mazhai from nadhi karaiyinilE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sudumkanneer.rm
- Sung by Sujatha(?) and Mano(?). Music by Sirpi.
- Well, the composer is not really Sirpi, since this is the thamizh version of the famous song "Dil Hoon Hoon Karen" from Rudaali. The song is such a melodious, captivating number that I wanted to put it in SOTD even though it is such a blatantly copied song.
- Nadhi KaraiyinilE (was called Jameela) was an offbeat film that was released a couple of months and sank without a trace. It made the festival rounds; It was an entry in the Shanghai film festival in 2001. Ponvannan wrote the screenplay based on a story by Kannada novelist Sara Abubakker. It deals with the complex issues in a muslim family, centering around Jameela, played by Suvalakshmi. The film got good reviews. I didn't see the movie, I don't think I will ever get to see (add to the list of films by B.Lenin and a whole bunch of similar off-beat films that get very minimal exposure in the video/DVD circuit). Along with Suvalakshmi, Ramji, Rajan.P.Dev acted in this movie.
- There is another SPB solo that is worth noting in this film, 'azhagukku raaNiyO', that sounds like a maaplah paattu.

bb,
You could have given credit to the "original" MD. Bhupen Hazarika ;-)

I wasn't sure if the MD was Bhupen or Hridhyanath Mangeshkar. Sung by Bhupen Hazarika for sure.

Friends,
I am late by a solid 48 hours! In the play 'PerumaaLE Saatchi', the mother of 'Kumaara Vijayam', Kamal's role was played by the veteran artiste Peeli Sivam, who plays the role of a 'dada' these days in TV serials. Jayachitra's role was played by one Suryaprabha, a very good drama heroine of those days. Nobody could unravel the mystery of why many such good Tamil drama heroines could not make even a remote dent in Kollywood!
Throughout the play, S.V.Sahasranamam's mature comedy impresses the audience.

Probably you got confused by the movie "Lekin". Hridhyanath Mangeshkar scored music for this movie and Dimple Kapadia acted in this movie as well. In Lekin and Rudali most of the lyrics are by Gulzar.

GS, you are right. I think I confused with Lekin.
Did anyone see this movie Nadhi karaiyinilE? any reviews?
