Reg SOYD...Sridevi herself mentioned that she likes PS's voice & in Telugu Most of the Songs for Srideve were by PS followed by SJ...
and As subbu mentioned Vidiya vidiya,
I always felt Renga rengayya & another one from Sivappu kal mookuthi were the best by PS for Sridevi

bb- the mention of 'La Paloma' takes me back to my school days where our ‘piano miss’ used to make us sing this song -‘When I left Habana, nobody saw me go---’
Malligai poo jaadhi roja is a faithful note by note adaptation of La Paloma. Though the film’s music was credited to S Hanumantha Rao (brother of S Rajeswara Rao), this song was composed by a team comprising of the great Dhanraj Master and R Parthasarathi. (Dhanraj was an acknowledged genius in Western Music- Many, including Ilayaraja, learned under him in his humble room in Sai Lodge, Luz Corner, Madras). Sangu Subramaniam wrote the lyrics for this song.
Ravu Balasaraswathi’s satin voice adds sheen to this lovely song. It is a pity that she was not utilized much in Tamil. However, as the 50s was a decade of an amazing variety of talented singers, she made her mark in some 50 odd songs. Many of them showcase her wonderful range. If I had choose the best 10 from the 50, I would pick the foll:
1.Sri Jaya Saraswathi devi- Bilhana
2.Veen pazhi thaano prabho en mel-Laila Majnu
3.Anbe paavama-Devadas
4.Aaa--Nenjin nilamai- Vaanaratham
5.Malligai poo jaadhi roja- Raji En Kannmani
6.Neela vanna kanna vaada- Mangaiyar Thilagam
7.Thangam pongum meni-Thenali Raman
8.Thudikkum vaalibamey nodikkul poi vidumey-Marmaveeran
9.Kannai thaan parikkuthu kaippadaatha rojappoo-Aasai Anna Arumai Thambi
10.Sollu nee raja- Anbu Engey

Saravanan, there was another old TFM song that was an adaptation of "Que Sara Sara", right? Do you remember the song/film?

Vijay:
I just searched my VCD collection and found 'chinnappeNNAna pOdhilE' in a collection of AMR-Jikki songs. It is from the movie Aravalli (MD: GR). It is a beautifully set dream sequence. The heroine's face resembles Panadari Bai and the hero looks like TR Mahalingam. Much of the song is sung by Jikki, with AMR joining towards the end. The dream ends with a sudden music where soldiers suddenly appear in the heroine's dream to arrest the hero! I will encode the song and send it to bb for putting in dhooL. It is a very pleasant song with nice orchestrations by GR.

You mean both songs are used to try and locate the 'kidnapped' kid? The "Que Sera Sera" version is used in Hitchcock's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much', I think.

Yes, that's what I meant. Yes, the film was "The Man who knew too much" (aahaa, Doris Day!!). I thought "konjik konjip pEsi" film (which film was that?) was a lift of that movie.

Hmm, missed 2 days, it's good though I didn't mean to hujack this thread earlier.
mythila,
You didn't say anything uncivil, I was reiterating how we differ in our views without insulting each other. It does seem unclear in my post, sorry about that. Hey, Paayum Puli and Engeyoa Kaetta Kural? That's very clever selective perception by you. Ejamaan is alaready covered under my favorable vote for RVU movies. I have maintained that there were individual songs all along, but not a dominant series like there was before 83. Also, Deva more or less perfected emulating and copying in some instances IR's rural song style in the 90s. When I heard "Vaikaasi Porandhaachu", "Solayamma", "Kizahkku Karai", "Vasandha Kaala Paravaigal" or "Sooriyan", I felt that those could've easily been IR movies from the late 80s. Some catchy tunes, but no intricate orchestration, flights of fancy with interludes, no elaborate string or horn sections or percussions, just flute, tabla, violins. Okay, let's end the IR discussion for awhile.
Greatly enjoyed the last 2 SOTDs. Today's was a revelation for me.

bb- the singer Balasaraswathi and the dance Balasaraswathi are different persons. The dancer Bala is no more. The singer Ravu Balasaraswathi lives a quiet life of retirement in Hyderabad. She is married to the erstwhile Maharaja of Kolanka(?)

Song of the Day: chinnap peNNaana pOdhilE from aaravalli.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/chinnappen.rm
- This is the tamil version of "Que Sera Sera", the Doris Day number in the Hitchcock movie "The Man Who Knew Too Much". (No, this is not "copied musicals vaaaaaaaaram" :-) ).
- MD: G.Ramanathan. Sung by Jikki and A.M.Raja. I think Jikki has held her own in this song, though her voice doesn't quiver like Doris Day's. "veNNilaa nilaa" replaces "Que Sera Sera". AMR gets in the song at the fag end, and does a good job.

Aravalli has Minavathy (pandari Bai s sister) I think,with T R Mahalingam.

These songs really paint the evolution of TFM ,its crossing over from core carnatic music to mild western adaptations, setting the path for Thiraiisai and mellisai."Que sara" -Maatran thottathu maillgai ....Nice choice.Have we had
Oridam thanile & Konjum Purave in SOTD?
I was listeneing to "Sarasarnagal varum suzhandre" by MKT.The raga is Mohanam but music looks very much like GR s and the orchestra and arrangement more western then any MKT song.
I have a doubt.Will Saravanan ever get a doubt?

I met some old cine musicians few years back who had played with GR.During the conversation we talked about GR s contribution in MKT songs.
GR s contribution to MKT s songs are interludes and conducting with Sivan mostly getting the basic tune after sessions with MKT for fixing up the brigas (for eg Maraivai puthaitha oodu which brings out MKT s classical music depth). But GR had his tunes as well like Manmatha leelai in between.GR was the front-end to make the song suit the film.
This song you can feel the GR s touch in the "Entry music" which is very western. So MS Sir,could be right for the tune, but it is the orchestra which is more capitvating in this song.

bb- You have reminded me of my long-forgotten 'Piano Miss' again today!
It is said that GR was initially reluctant to copy an English song, but did it at Sundaram's (Modern Theatres)urging.
Yes, it is Mainavathi, though I'm don't think it was TRM. He never had anyone else sing for him. (TRM acted in Amudhavalli)
I have seen the film long back- a very interesting story of a land which is ruled by women, and men are treated as slaves. The queen Aaravalli (or Sooravalli) is a man-hater- Mainavathi is the princess, who secretly falls in love with the hero, and is terrified that the queen may find out. Later the hero overcomes all hindrances and wins Mainavathi's hand!
There was another good AMR-Jikki duet as well- Anbe endhan munnaley(?). Tiruchi Loganathan's 'Chinna kutti naathana'is another memorable number.
