- MD: Chandrabose. Sung by KJY and P.Suseela.
- This was the first big hit of Chandrabose (the film came in 1978). The film starred Sivakumar and Sridevi.

Good inputs from everyone. Saravanan, actually thanks to people like you, atleast a few threads in DF are worth visiting these days.
OISG: I agree that the onus is somewhat(not completely) on ARR/Shankar to set it right and they have a strong enough hold on the market to effect a change. Atleast if they set right the pronunciation dept. by promoting some fresh local talent and not using the likes of Udit/Sukhwinder for a few albums I would be happy.

bb, another song that evokes strong nostalgia. Used to be played often in Vividh Bharati those days. Chandrabose composed a few good ones in the 80s.

Aaha- what a song! Thanks,bb. En manam engengo parakkuthu--
Chandrabose, in 1977, sang in MSV's music- 'Endi Muthamma' from Aaru Pushpangal. In the same year, he also made his debut as a MD in Madhura Geetham.
Though the haunting 'Kannan engey'-SPB-PS is supposed to have been a copy of a Hindi song, Chandrabose showed his class in 'Sugamaana ragam, suvaiyaana thamizh paattu noi theerkkum marundhallavo' -TMS-Seergazhi G.
Machanai Paartheengala had another hit song too 'Engamma maharasi, ellaam un kairasi' in which CB joins TMS in the vocals.
Coming to the SOTD,I love the bit of music that precedes each charanam, PS scintillates in 'Avanodu naan aadum pozhuthellam then', the lyrics show rare imagination in 'sindhithu nindrathenna' and the humming over the lyrics in the end is a fantastic finish.

Saravanan
Kannan engey was on the lines of "Sapna mera tutgaya"(movie?).But somehwere in this forum i read that Sugamana Ragam was composed by SM Subbiah Naidu and used in this movie Mathurageetham.(movie *ing Vijyakumar and Srividya and the song pictuirsed on V.Goplakrishnan and Vijayakumar)
bb,Hope this song changes your opinion on PS!
God! Sridevi indeed had a big nose! But Sivakumar was in his ususal self-" stiff Kadhal drohi"
In engamma maharasi CB sings "thaye en atha un thaal paninthu kumbiduvom aatha" - I used think it was Bangalore Ramani ammal for a while!

OISG,
You thot it was by RamaNi ammmaL :-O I thot it was by that pushpavanm kuupusamy ('velan' title he only sung). Ellarumay pidaari maadiri kathuvaanunga :-))
bb, this was a ever-green hit by KJY-PS. Chandrabose started his innings with good hits. Many songs were sung by PS and later by VJ.
An excellent song with CB+PS combo was "Maalai muthu maalai... kondu maadhavi vandhaal marupadiyum". PS anayasamma paadinaanga. Kannadasan wrote the lyrics (in his last leg). He asked, it seems, the MD 'who is going to sing'. When CB answered "is is PS', Kannadasan stayed in the recording theatre till PS arrives and completes the song. Kannadasan does not do this often, unless he was very much for. He liked the songs very much and appreciated the entire team :-)

wow, this was one weekend when the TFMP cables were kept warm throughout!
Regd previous SOTD's talk on Msia vasu, most of MV's songs were in the pre-84 era. At that time, dappa songs had their own acceptance and his voice suited them the most. Post 85, he was sidelined for major albums and confined to some nameless movies only. Thats why in pre-84 you had MV singing belligerent numbers and SPB the soft melodies in the same movie(eg Thambikku entha ooru).
Nice to hear a CB song, he deserves a place in tfm's all time top 5. Can anyone throw more info on his movies in the 90s?

Guys, Vijay, Udhaya, Mythila, I apologize for making those personal attacks earlier. I realize this isn't the appropriate place for such. I was just disturbed by what Mr. Udhaya had said. I felt sorry for him when he said that he was hurt by others praising 'mediocre' songs. Hey, I'm a sympathetic guy! Really! I never dreamed that I would be met up with such scathing responses. So again, my apologies. Bye. Love ya. :-)

Some casual examples in posts sometimes have the glorious destiny of making SOTD...Now that I know how this works, you can count on more such couched lists :-)
This song is remarkable in every sense. The beauty of the composition is its mellow, melodious simplicity. The the bass of KJY merges seamlessly with the mezzo of PS to evoke a sense of joyous calm and contentment. Give me an underrated CB to all the hyped-up newbes anyday!
Thanks for this moment of excellence - pure and simple.
(PS's other alluring poovu song that comes to mind and lingers is Avarampoovu Aarezhunaala...from Achchamillai Achchamillai. The SOTD and this song both have that inimitable PS humming. Vaaththai Illa Jaalam!)

Udaya, Iam just wondering what was uncivil in my prev post .If u talk about effort being proportinal to quality, take the song 'Maniye manikkuyile' from Naadodithenral which also falls in the same Natabhairavi as 'Vizhiyile' . You cannot see any compromise in the quality.Iam not asking you to change your taste. Iam just asking you to consider the later work of IR like Paatu paadava , Nilave mugam kaatu , kutti ,Aandan adimai etc which have almost gone unnoticed. IR's last movies with Rajini(Veera,Ejamaan) are as good or even better than the work done for Paayum puli, engeyo ketta kural .
End dig*/

Subbu, I always felt SJ's voice suited Sridevi to the tee. But in this song, PS's voice is just 'Then'.This reminds me of another wonderful PS numbers in film 'Saindhadamma saindhaadu' - 'Kannan enna sonnan' and 'Oru kaadal devathai'

Looks like a good discussion over the weekend. I agree with BB on the numbers that made the difference between the two eras, the % of hits to the number of movies he directed are low compared to his pre 83 era. But at the same time there were a few directors that either demanded his work or some on which, as his mood would suit, he came up with spellbinding numbers like the pre 83 era. Well he could have just said that he wanted to turn out classic numbers and not accept all those offers, and if he did that you know what might have been his fate and what we indians immediately attribute that to. Directors like Mahendran (Nenjaththai killadhe), Balu Mahendra(Un kannil neer vazhindhaal, rettai vaal kuruvi, moondram pirai etc), Maniratnam, Sridhar(Thendral vandhu ennai thodum, Oru odai nadhiyaagiradhu) were able to get good numbers from him. I think albums like Johnny, Thambikku endha ooru, thai mookambikai etc are as good as those of the pre 83 era. I am not sure if its even a stretch if I say that it was because of the music being more appreciated that people didnt really care much about the lyrical value, when you have tunes that appeal to the layman then you have to appeal to his more basic instincts you cant insist being lyrically great. That too was not his problem that was an issue that the lyricist and the dir/producer have to answer. I think even with such drab lyrics if he was able to do so many moview stands testament to the fact that his music was good as it was before.
I think that he alone is not an exception to this rule even ARR doesnt sound as fresh he was when he came out with Roja, Duet etc...
Just my .02

Mythila, unfortunately both the numbers you mentioned from 'Saindhadamma saindhaadu' are not for Sridevi (though she was the heroine). The first one for Jayadevi and the later for Meera. But another tappanguthu kind of song "atha magan muthazhagan arumbu meesa kattazhagan" was for Sridevi.
In my opinion, PS' best suited number for Sridevi was "Vidiya vidya solli tharuven". The line PS starts in that song was "Maalayil malligai andhiyil panjachaNai". Sridevi turns from the backside with her 'pinnal jadai' on the front with lots of malligai poo.... wawawawawawa!!!

I can't believe that Chandrabose started off as a singer. I've heard him sing only "poonchittuk kuruvigaLaa" and let's just say that was not his cup of tea :-)
Subbu, actually, I think vidiya vidiya sollith tharuvEn was a sub-par effort from PS, but that argument is for another day.
CM, I think IR could have stayed better after 83 with more competition and less volume of movies.
Song of the Day: malligaippoo jaadhi roja from raaji en kaNmaNi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mallpjaadhi.rm
- I heard this song for the first time today, and was blown over. The song is very different from its times, IMO. The singer is Balasaraswathy Devi who has given a great number here. The song is slow, and has a night club song feel. The waltzy feel of the song, with interesting usage of the veeNai, probably makes it the oldest waltz song. Do make it a point to listen to this number.
- I was under the impression that the MD for this song was G.Ramanathan, but Manisegaran thinks otherwise. This is what he has written earlier on this movie:
RAJI EN KANMANI
There was a query on Malligai Poo Jathi Roja from the film Raji En Kanmani. I hope the enquirer would visit this site. I saw the film when I was 7 years old, so I hope my memory serves right. It is a Gemini film, commercially a flop, but created sensation in the community for the untimely storyline. It was acted by T.R. Ramachandran, Sri Ranjani and Sreeram. TRR appears as a pichaikkaran, playing harmonium, and Sri Ranjani as a blind flower seller. They team up and she sings to attract customers. One of the songs is Malligai Jathip Poo Roja. They fall in love. Sri Ranjani has not seen the face of TRR, but once touches his face to get the feel of his face. TRR then meets up with a doctor(Sreeram) to arrange for the eye operation of Sri Ranjani. He leaves Sri Ranjani in the house of the doctor and goes to make financial arrangements. Some soolchi takes place happens and he is sent to jail. Later he tries to escape but police shoot his leg and extend his jail term. After waiting for a long time the doctor gives up hope and performs free operation. Having given up the hope of ever seeing TRR they get married. They have a son. While the mother and son go for a walk, the boy crosses the road he is almost knocked down by a car. But he is saved by a limping stranger. But in the course of saving the boy he is hit on the face. TRR recognises Sri Ranjani and is shocked to learn of the marriage. Sri Ranjani who does not recognise TRR takes him home and nurses him. As she touches his face she has a feeling that she has touched the face before. The doctor who turns up at that moment identifies TKR. TKR takes him to a corner and says that his coming was accidental and never intended to destroy the family. He wishes them well and leaves the house. SUBAM!
In those days the Gemini organisation never believed in promoting any individual artiste. It believed in team work. There will be credits like MUSIC by Gemini Isaikkulu, STORY by Gemini Story Ilakka etc. It was only in the later days that they slowly relaxed this style and started to reveal the individual artistes. Anyway, the MD for Raji En Kanmani is Parthasarathy. Apart from Mallikai Poo Jathy Roja there is another "KILLER" song called "Sundara Malare Solliduvaye En Anbar Vanthal Ennidam Neeye" by the same R. Balasaraswathy Devi.
In this film a test was made on the acceptability of western music in Tamil films. Both the songs are Spanish in origin. The songs became widely accepted and appreciated as the MD introduced more mood and feelings into them. Thats all I can remember on something that I saw at the tender age of 7. May be some elders in this site could correct me if I have gone wrong on the details.
- Thread on Balasaraswathi Devi, with almost no discussion :-) http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/26242.04.25.59.html . Balasaraswathy also sang "neela vaNNak kaNNaa vaadaa".
- This song is based on La Paloma, a Spanish folk song, that became the title song of Chaplin's "City Lights".
