Who can be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian FIlm Music .
Is it S.Janaki or P.Susheela or Chitra or Vani Jayram..?
I think Janaki is the best of all and she should be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian Music

It is true, SJ is humble and very friendly. Her voice is like medicine. She can sing any type of songs, like classical to caberet. In my humble opinion SJ is always best.

ravi, call it psuedo voice or something else.
That is where the difference is and that is where the amusement is.
You can be in for surprises and variety in her songs.
It very much appeals to.
Janaki does not have one voice. You cannot predict that her voice is going to be or will be like this in a song.
Frequently, she changes her rendition style at various points of time within the same song itself and that adds to the joy of listeners.
She is "Padikkaadha Palkalai Kazhagam".

kumarr, I liked the way you put it. Maybe you like the 'pseudo' voice itself. But I definitely have to appreciate the way SJ sings for different kinds of people - boy, old lady, child. But somehow I am unable to appreciate her singing otherwise (please, no offences meant to SJ fans - it is just my opinion/feeling).

Ravi, there have been incidents when Illayaraja and his troupe got mesmerised and lost in Janaki's singing that they forgot to deliver the next piece in the orchestration.
"Maadha Un Koyilil Mani Deepam Aettrinaen" from "Acchaani" is one such occasion.
"Appadiyae Urukkidum Andha Paatu"

Look at the way Susila sang "Karpoora Bommai Ondru"..... I never think anyone can even come near that....

SJ has had many a number like this and to name a few are
"Mandhira Punnagayo Manjal Nilavo Kanne Kanne"
"Azhagiya Kanne Uravugal Neeye..."
"Pillai Nila Irundum Vellai Nila"
"Thenae Thenpaandi Meenae; Isai Thenae"
"Chinna Thaayaval Thandha Raasaave..."
and the list is long.
Her "Paadavaa Un Paadalai" from "Naan Paadum Paadal" cannot be forgotten at all.
Whatever good may be the voice of PS, she lacks variety.
When PS was there, there was a need for LRE.
PS cannot sing for KR Vijaya (Heroine) as well as CID Sakuntala (Kavarchi Nadigai of yester-years)
But SJ can sing and had sung for Sri Devi as well as Silk Smitha.
SJ = PS + LRE
Eventhough most of the people like to hear melodious songs, including myself, all the time we cannot hear melodies.
Sometimes, our mood will make us turn to jumpy, romantic, horny songs etc.
A change will be felt as needed and we may want to hear something other than melodies.
That's where Janaki gains as the singer for all occasions and moods.
Sometimes I may turn to
"Nila Kaayudhu Neram Nalla Neram"
"Nethu Raathiri Yemmaa..."
"Ponmeni Urugudhae..."
"Poomaalai Bodhai Aanadhae..."
"Vachukkavaa Onna Mattum Nenjukkula; Sathyama Nenjukkule Onnum Illa..."
"Orakka Kathudhu Kozhi; Thanni Erachu Kottudhu Vaali"
and such songs.
This variety, I stress, is missing in PS as well as KSC.
Can anyone other than SJ sing
"Oru Naal Andha Oru Naal Unnai Mudhalil Kanda Andha Thiru Naal Adhu Marandhu Poguma"
from "Devathai" ?
In fact, that time Janaki was not singing much in Raja's music and I am sure Raja would have made the song especially for Janaki.
See her age, when she sang that song. I suppose, she should be atleast 60 that time.
SJ is a singer for all occasions and moods.
She does not have one voice. She is a mutli-faceted singer effectively portraying many moods.
Janaki, even in her this age, is better than what Asha and Lata are performing in their ages.
I have heard
"Tanha;Tanha..." from Rangeela by Asha and the same sung by SJ in the Tamil Version of Rangeela.
SJ goes past Asha.
Similarly, the Tamil Version "Nenjinile Nenjinile" from "Uyire" sung by SJ sounds better than the Hindi Version sung by Lata.
SJ is SJ and she is God-Gifted.

RR Sir, I am using my name only and that name is "kumarr". This "kumarr", my name, is different from the other one which is "kumar" [one "r" missing]
HHHW Sir, SJ's "Azhagiya Kanne;Uravugal Neeye" is simply superb.
Not this alone, similar to this, I had listed out a few other songs in one of my earlier postings.
"Thaalaattu Maari Ponnadhae; En Kannil ...." from "Unnai Naan Sandithaen" is another master piece.
In the same film, she had also sung the wonderful "Devan Thantha Veenai; Adhil Devi Seidha Gaanam" with Jayachandran.
"Kuguma Manjalukku Indru Dhaan Nalla Naal", a classical duet with KJ is superb but not many might have known and noticed.
It is from a Vijayakant movie, the name of which is "Enga Mudhalaali", I suppose.
The list is an endless one.
As Chitra, said sometime in the past, there is not any expression or mood which she had not conveyed in her singing.
She is a living legend and a dictionary for the future singers to look into.
She is a "Kalai Pokkisham".
"Paatu Thalaivi Paadinaal Paatu Thaan; Kootam Rasikkum Thaalamae Pottu Thaan"
(Reminded of the wonderful duet "Paatu Thalaivan Paadinaal Paatu Thaan" with SPB)

I don't know why no can comment about VJ and Chitra voices. Eventhough PS and SJ could give lot of melody songs, the most soft voice for melody songs is Chitra. Am I right? VJ voice is totally different from all the base female voices like Latha,Asha,Suseela,Janaki and all. one or two people came followed by VJ voice. Those are S.P.Sailja and Jansi.

kumarr,
I totally agree with you...SJ is more versatile and she has sung a variety of songs...to the extent that there is no one kind of song that she has not sung so far....
In 'Isai arasi' song (from thai moogambigai), IR used PS, SJ and Rajeshwari(?). SJ simply overtook PS in that song.. IR gave the toughest part to SJ instead of PS for a reason..
All that said, SJ is creechy in high pitched and that's where she loose a lot of votes.. (listen to 'adi aaathadiiii' from movie kadalorakavidhaigal) and sometimes she sings like a 'paatti' (listen to 'ennaya ABC' from movie adhutha vaarisu)
Chitra has sung a variety of songs and her voice is sweeter than all other female singers.. It's just my openion.

please any one find which one is the best?
Chittukuruvi mutham - Puthiaparavai
Kanden engum poomahal -Kaatrinile varum geetham
Mehame mehame - Paalaivancholai
Un marbil - Ninaithen Vanthai
if ur answer is one of the four, u didn't enjoy the other voices.

Cho Sir,
Inspite of her voice going screechy at times and also within the song you mentioned, that is temporary.
Within the same song at other portions, she will make up for that.
"Adi Aathadi" still is a vibrant song and one of SJ's best and is a song from the stable of Illayaraja-Bharathiraja combination.
Can you forget the opening of that song ?
"Adi Aathadi" nu Ezhukakullaeyae, Edukkakullaeyae, oru anandham manasula pongum.
Adhuvum, Andha Paadalin Naduvae, SJ vin Humming Paarkanum, Pinni Eduthurupaanga.
"lalala laa..."
Look at "Nilaa Kaayum Neram Saranam".
In that "Anbae Neeyae Azhagin Amudhae..." will first come slow. Then the high pitch will come "Anbae Neeyae... Azhagin Amudhae..."
In that she had done better than Mano.
Also, Chitra is more a classical singer with a carnatic base in her voice like VJ.
SJ, inspite of all her limitations, is still the best and the variety that she has provided cannot be provided by anybody else.
She stands tall in TFM.
Ever Heard the old song
"Thennan Keetru Oonjalilae; Thendralil Neendhidum Solayilae; Chittu Kuruvi Paadudhu Than Pettai Thunayai Thaeduthu..."
She has sung that song with PBS, and the humming not to be forgotten. Such a pleasant experience you will have and a treat to listen.
Music is from M.B. Sreenivasan.
SJ, is easily the best.
Considering the many good numbers and variety she had given, we are not able to say otherwise even about her some bad numbers (Negligible)
"Gunam Naadi Kuttramum Naadi Avattrul
Migai Naadi Mikka Kollal".
