Who can be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian FIlm Music .
Is it S.Janaki or P.Susheela or Chitra or Vani Jayram..?
I think Janaki is the best of all and she should be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian Music

Hi Nair,
Ur article was very interesting. Thanks for ur brickbats. For PS there will always be a vidya and for SJ there will always be a Nair!!!!!! A fan writes on his own regardless of the group.
Well being a PS fan if given one quarter of a second and any time scale (I would end up listening to PS).thanks I took the clue from ur posting.
Once again Thank U very much.I am just happy to be a mere vidya a person who atleast becomes miserable by writing in a wrong thread!!!!! and latter regretting for it"
Once again I am not here to have a debate . The topic was "Who is the best melody queen and ended up in a wrong thread" I may restrain from writing to this thread.
Once again I would end up saying "How well nair writes in measurements of time, acres etc,in **********my Opinion atleast Vidya's opinion PS is PS and SJ is SJ.Take it in whatever way you'll want to.
Thanks & Regards
Vidya

Hi,
"There may be people out there who are living a miserable life, unable decide who is the better of SJ and PS. Those people may be easily influenced by seemingly convincing postings such as vidya's".
In my opinion that is "VIDYA's opinion" this is a very harsh usage of words for a music loving person.
May peace be with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regards
Vidya

Vidya, u havent said anything wrong. U know? many times, hearing the golden rendition of PS, I go into a trance. I only regret for PS at those times because with such level of voice (remember, there was no tracks then) I honestly felt she did not get the recognition due to her (probably overcast or dominated by North with LM and AB) and above all how humble she is inspite of such God gifted talent. Another unfortunate part was that IR do not give priority to PS but opted for SJ which saw SJ rise to stardom then.
So Ms.Vidya, your words are very true. Moreover u are not offending anybody - so go ahead, I love to read when anyone praises PS.

Dear All,
I am following the interesting debate regarding the Queen of Melody in the South. To start with, the names of only four singers were given to be the contenders of this title. What about Rao Bala Saraswathi Devi (RBSD), who was the first playback singer in the south. She acted as a heroine in the role of Rani Samyuktha opposite to MGR as Pruthvi Raj, 60 years ago. Though she did not act in many films, she sang a number of songs in mAnavathi, naa Illu, and 3 songs in DevaDas. So far nobody's voice could equal that of RBSD. The nuances and subtilities of her voice and mode of singing have been unique. Without knowing her, the so called connoisseurs are opting for SJ or PS. This is pure ignorance. Mr Nair, Please note this.

If you are listening a song from p.susheela ,carefully hear all the words coming from her devine throat, she can go deeply into the songs and can give emotions for each and every words. There is no matter, about language. Her Hindi,Tamil,Telugu,Malayalam,Kannada,Oriya,Simhala and Tulu songs are really uncomparable. No other singers can come near p.s because her voice is the best and perfect among other female voices.
P.susheela's first malayalam song is from the filim SEETHA ,song begins like this "pattu pady urakkam njan".During the time of this song p.s didn't know anything about Kerala culture and about malayalees. But this god gifted singer made this song as the everbest Lullaby among all malayalam Lullabies. That is p.s ,she can only do like this.
In Tamil there is a song begine like this "Nenjam marappathilley".In malayalam this song is remaked like this "nisheedhinee" ,Tamil song sang by P.S and Malayalam by S.J.My dear friends please hear this songs and see the differences, both are popular songs. But if you hear this songs one by one I am sure that you will mark a high score for p.susheela's "Nenjam marappathilley" s.j's song is good song but it is not reaching near to p.s's song because of the perfect modulation, enjoyable high pitch and voice claritty.
There is a malayalam song in the filim 'palattu kunhikannan' starts like "Nanam kunungikale" this song is sung by p.s and s.j together.Every body can easily say that s.j's voice is far behind from the voice of p.s.This is a fact which any body can understand.
There is so many examples of p.s's songs with s.j and other singers and all these songs the leading voice is the one and only p. susheela's.
P.SUSHEELA IS THE EVERGREEN MELODY QUEEN

How wonderfully you revealed the greatness of p.susheelamma, ziyad congrags for your strong and honest words. If some body is seeing other singers in the position of p.susheela, that means they are blind to see the real tallent because of ignorence and wrong concepts about music

When it comes to variety - P Suseela is not the one. It's a fact that PS cannot sing a variety of songs. Her tamil rendition is better than others but her majority of songs proved that she is good for melodious songs only.. I am not aware of any fast paced/peppy numbers by PS.
Janaki is more versatile but she is a bit creechy in high pitch.
Vani has a great range and well suited for classical numbers but not versatile.
My vote is for Chitra who has done a variety of songs in many languages and her voice is sweeter than others. I would rate Sujatha on par with Chitra.
There is one underrated singer, Uma Ramanan. She is a great singer but didn't get utilised by any MD other than IR. otherwise, we would be talking about her a lot these days.. Even IR stopped using her voice long time ago..

Versatility is not just singing club songs, melodies, fast paced rap song or sexy songs...it's more to do with emoting the feelings of the situation of the songs aptly. Whether it's breezy song by a teenager or a girl in a love, or a melting lullaby by a loving mom or a sad expression of a worried house wife, or the happy prayers of a fervent devotee - you name any character and beckon Suseela to sing, then you will see them living right before you.
Such is the calibre of Susheela - unmatched by any other male or female singer past or present.

Cho: While I do not want to get into the debate
of whether SJ or PS is more versatile but PS has inumerable songs of a fast paced or other varied nature such as "Aduthathu Ambujatthai", "Palakkattu rajavukku", Indru Vanda Inda mayakkam and on and on.

It is my opinion that "Janaki" adds value almost to every song she sings.
You can look for surprises and variations in her rendition.
Within a song itself, she will sing the same line variedly and differently each different time, much to the amusement of the listeners.
Tamizhla oru particular Line a - Adi a - Edukarrathu nu Solluvanga illa, Janaki is a doyen in that.
"Unarchi Poorvama" Paadaradhula "Arasi".
Give any song to her,
Melody,
Romantic,
Horny,
Classical
no doubt she will not stop till rendering it to perfection.
"Paadava Un Paadalai" (From Naan Paadum Paadalai) Paatula vara Andha "Aadhangatha" Adha Vida Super a Velipadutha Mudiyaadhu
"Azhagu Malaraada" (From Vaidehi Kaathirundhal) Paattula, oru Ilam Vidhavai Pennin Thavippai Arpudhamaga Velipaduthi irupaargal.
Also, in "Magalir Mattum" S. Janaki has totally dominated the scene.
She sings for all the three, Revathi, Oorvasi and Rohini.
When she sings for Oorvasi, that "Brahminical touch" will be there.
When she sings for Rohini, the "Local Chennai Language Flavour" will be there.
No other singer can perform to that extent of perfection.
No wonder, that SPB says, that Janaki has been the one Female Playback singer with whom she is not able to compete and not able to sing matchingly.
"Endha Poovilum Vaasam Undu" [Ramyam/Anandham]
"Pilla Nila" [Oru Vidhavai, Thanadhu Pillaigalin Edhir Kaalathin Mel Ulla Nambikkai]
"Pon Vaanam Panneer Thoovudhu Inneram"
"Chinna Thaayaval Thantha Raasavae"
"Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuil Konji Konji" Pola Konji Konji Mazhalai Mozhiyil Paadi Irupaargal.
.
.
.
She is easily the best.
It is true that her voice is screechy at some points of time within the song.
We can find limitations in anybody's voice. Everybody will have limitations.
Inspite of all her limitations, she stands tall, in TFM and is undoubtedly the best.
When Illayaraja, began to give opportunities, to Chitra, she was given stern instructions that she should emulate "Janaki".
No wonder, Janaki stands as a role-model for SPB or Mano or Chitra or Minmini.
Right from T.R. Mahalingam,Trichy Loganathan,A.M. Raja, Sirkazhi,PBS,TMS,SPB To Malaysia,Yesudoss,Jeyachandran,Mano,Hariharan,Unni Krishnan,Unni Menon,Sankar Mahadevan,Srinivas,Kamal, Rajni, it is a big list.
She, is the greatest, and I admire her simplicity inspite of all the talent within her.

kumarr, true that SJ is a very nice and humble person inspite of her popularity. But I somehow feel she sings (and maybe even speaks!) in a pseudo voice because her voice seems different in different pitches.
According to me, PS is the best!
