I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

No, I did not mean to say that *YOU* called IR a "self-proclaimed genius". I was just asking you why u mentioned the phrase "battered self-esteem". It was a question, not an argument or accusation. Maybe I missed sth. in ur posts.
Also my Lata statement was light-hearted. It was not to be taken seriously at all. I am sorry but I didnt make that clear enough :-)

A small digression...manam thaanga villai adhanaal ezhudhugiren...
Ennadhaan sollunga, MSV tunes-a irukkira "heart" IR tunes-la missing. BGM-um interludes-um illaamal IR tunes-ai (likely after 81-82) paadinaal kekkaradhu konjam kashtam (even though I agree that his interludes and BGM gave him his due credence) whereas MSV's tunes will just like that stand apart. I always felt MSV never got the right kind of acclaim. (AvarE appadi ninaikkiraarO illaiO!).
I can easily see why SPB ranked MSV above all the musicians that he had ever worked with. "Marandhe POchu Romba NaaL Aachu" - indha oru line-laye -'nijamaave oru vishayam marandhu poi nyaabagam varra' bhaavam irukku ille? Adhudhaan MSV!
But then all this depends on what one expects out of music! OK, coming back to this thread...
Once GRaghavan posted somewhere as quoted by MSV:
"After IR became No.1 (almost) all songs were sung by SPB and SJ. Even those songs - which will not shine if sung by them - were also sung by them. In my opinion, had many of those songs been given to Vani Jayaram, they would have been better!"
Very true. SJ paadiya "Bala Kanaka" in Salangai Oli is one such example. And I think there could be many more!

Another song I can think of is the fast number by SJ-Mazhai varuvathu ..theriyum. I do respect SJ as a great singer, she is also one of my favourites but in this fast paced song its very difficult to decipher the words. Iam sure VJ would have sung this effortlessly with a very clear diction.
Here someone mentioned the pattu solli song-Thou. sadhana's voice is kind of sweet her tamil diction is still faulty. Its really sad to realise that IR was happy to give this wonderful song to an artiste with a faulty diction. I wonder why he couldn't think of VJ.
I was very eagerly waiting for VJ's Nanda song but it was very disappointing that to know that it never found its place in the cass./film.
Thanks karthi for the pointer-Its true VJ would have lifted the song to great heights.

HI, Did you guys participate in the current TFM poll? I think VJ-connoisseurs have to do their bit - it is a important topic - and your vote would go a long way...Just urging you to do so, avvallvuthaan!!

avr,
Jathi are rhythmic syllables meant for dance. Swaram means sa-ri-ga-ma patterns. Jathis set in coordination with swaras, sung for Bharathanatyam and Kuchupudi performances, is called Jathiswaram.
Karthi,
There are 3 female solos in "rasigan oru rasigai". Only one of those by VJ (kaatrinilE varum geetham). VJ would have done justice to the other two compositions if she had sung those as well. The album would have become a classic. Sad it didn't.
You must listen to this latest song (one of the singers is MSV). enna situationO, enna moodO oru maNNUm viLangalai. adha paththi ippO MDs kavalai pattaalthaanE. Even that Nayagan song - Chinnathayival thandha rasave and the other one from Udhaya Geetham - Thaene thempandi Meene (female version) - another missed opportunity - another classical loss. What could VJ possibly do to make things come her way when people who should know better keep messing up all the time??

"Yaen indha suya-mariyadhaiinmai" - I think Naaz, MSV succumbed to the pressure and hence sang that song. He's generally known to be a very soft-hearted person. Check out an article in this site www.newyorkraja.com where MSV talks about the music troupes in an interview where he says: "Unga kuzhandhaingaLa unga kaN edhirlaye pottu adichu, dhuvamsam senjaa manasu thaangumaa?" about his feelings when he hears his creations being rendered on the stage.

Naaz,
Digression:
Regarding Sadhana singing Paattu Cholli: In case u didn't know, the director Thangar Bachan (supposedly a person with a quest for perfection) feels that Nandita Dass has a husky voice and so wanted the voice to be a little different. So much so that, even after having finished all the work with Azhagi (except dubbing) and its audio release, as of Nov last, he had been looking for a suitable voice to dub for Nandita as he feels that the current dubbing artists have “keechu” kural. Hence, the delay in its movie release.
Which is why, I feel, Chitra and Sujatha lost out on the song, and so would have VJ. Sadhana’s voice is not as shrill (replace with the right word:)) as VJ, KSC or Suja’s. Moreover, Nandita is new to TF and so Sadhana singing for IR would also provide the required difference, as Sadhana had lastly sung for IR some time during early 90’s.
Now, don’t ask me if Thangar got Sadhana to get the diction right. She is certainly better than she usually is:) We’ll know how perfect Thangar is at direction when the movie releases:).

Vijay - Yeah, it was a Mohan-Urvasi starrer.
Karthi - Soft-hearted is fine, but being suckered is not...agree?
Isaiosai - Sadhana is a talented artiste. Listen to her songs in Vaada (Promise) with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Roop Kumar Rathod. Some sincere and fine singing on that album. Tamzihil kural mattum inimaya irundha podhadhu...Zha, Gnya, chinna La periya La - ellam suthamma irrukkanum...bashayoda varra Nunnukkangallum theliva irrukkanum...Pudhsa oru tamzih terindha paadagiye therntheduthirukalaam IR - The only consolation in all this is - thank god, he had the good sense not to give it to Bhavadharini. Then that song would have had to be Paatu Kolli! Paatu Kolli! - then.
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Mon Jan 14 16:31:18 EST 2002
Isaiosai: If IR had used VJ, she would have sounded new to all tamil film music listeners...She has not sung for IR since Kavidhai Kelungal - which was more than a decade ago! (Her recent songs from Neela are hugely popular in Karnataka - Ae Meru Ee Meru was one of the top ten of Kannada hits from last year.)

Naaz,
looks like u didn't get me. to me it seems like Thangar Bachan (TB) wanted somebody with a "ghaNirnu" kind of voice and so it went to Sadhana. IR had already had his quota of freedom when he decided to pen 3 songs and sing 1 and so i feel he had to oblige TB. As for pronunciations in TFM, when compared to other MDs as on today, I am more than happy with IR. Otherwise, if not for his conviction and resolve, who would risk a Kaasi now-a-days.
