Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel D, you think VJ's was the "Amma" version of the song that made it to the disc? IR does that to VJ's songs sometimes - The title song for Idhayam Oru Kovil was also a solo by VJ which did not make it to the audio version. IR's rendition of the same did!
Chandira Pirai Parthaen - many current singers have to be born again (with enough talent) to render a song like that. Amazing clarity, emotion and beauty in that song - Lyrics, Composition, Voice and Mood. A miracle of a song, truly.

Karthi - SJ had another nice duet in the same film "Oru Vaanavil Pole, En Vazhvile Vandhai." Nice duet with PJC.

Balaji - Nooravathu Naal also had a duet by VJ/KJY
"Ullagam Muzhuthum Pazhaiya Raathiri, Unnakkum Yenakkum Pudhiya Raathiri..." I have been hoping to find that song for so long...no luck yet!

Naaz,
IR did not attempt at replacing "kavithai kELungaL":-) But the irony is he did give many good songs to VJ in Telugu (gharshana, sithakokochiluka, swarnakamalam, etc.)
Priya,
If you haven't already heard here is a short Jathiswaram. It is a breeze for VJ. I wonder if it is longer in the film version.

AV: I used to use 'kk' as my id (handle?) 'til I discovered someone else using the same initials in the same thread. So I switched to kik - after all, it's highly unlikely anyone else would use this. it's the 1st 2 letters of my first name & 1st letter of my last name. Too lazy to type in my full name in each thread.

Neel D,
Funny, the songs are from the tamil Agni Natchatiram (I believe, Gharshana is a remake in telegu?) but the picture at the site is from Nayagan!! Don't tell me these tunes are from the remake of Nayagan in telegu now!! Whoa!
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Fri Jan 11 23:27:25 EST 2002
Neel D, I think IR always thought of VJ as a "replacement" singer (when his first choices were unavailable - particularly when it came to Tamil remakes in Telegu.) It is to VJ's credit that she proved to be better than his original choices. So, giving her some of his best tunes - well, that was just VJ's sweet revenge!

Naaz,
"Naayakudu" has Karthik and Amala's picture:-)
I have not been happy with IR's choice of singers for a long time. I feel that "isaiyil thodanguthammaa" from "Hey Ram" should have been given to VJ. It would have become another classic. Ajay C, though he did a decent job, did not impress me at all. The song has VJ written all over it.

Neel D- It's good to know that somebody else has such a feeling...there are times when I think a specific artist would have turned it into something else, something beyond the ordinary...I have the feeling when I hear a song sometimes and think of a Rafi, or an Asha Bhonsle and most times, I feel they should have given this one to Vani, this one has something of that quality that she would have recognised easily, would have delivered impeccably...
This may be the textual influence of her other songs, accentuating a instinctual feeling. And it does not happen at every song. There are specific numbers where you end up thinking...why didn't they give this to her? This is cakewalk, child's play, signature VJ in every sense...surely, they couldn't have been so dumb to give it to the other person who really does not inhabit the "soul" of that particular song...It is a sort of anger, a indignance at the oversight.
IR has done so, many times. And that's truly the loss of those particular compositions. But when he scores, particularly with the voice of VJ, it is with great aplomb. The songs from Azaghae Unnai Aarathikiraen, Seethakokachilaka, Rosapoo RKari, Vaidhegi Kaathiriunthaal, Swarnakamalam, Punnagai Mannan - just to list a few randomly, have been highpoints in his career, as well. VJ has those songs, I tell myself, that is an amazing legacy of two creative minds realising one common beauty. A miracle, when ever that happened.
Aren't you glad, at least, that it did?

The one thing we don't take into consideration when we think of genius is Ego. There is a lot of that involved - and VJ, i have heard, does not suffer fools easily. And I have also heard that IR has issues with his background and his apprenticeship as a musician (under GKV). Although a certified genius, he has been given to insecure gestures of pomp and self-congratulation. This is somewhat evident in the many proclaimed titles he adorns "Isai Gnyani" "Maestro" "Isai Thilagam" etc. Not to suggest that he is not all that, but, somehow, all this focus on being the "chosen" one betrays a certain lack, a battered self-esteem.
Given all this - The VJ/IR recordings would have been something to behold!!

Thanks for not mentioning Lata here :-) This statement of course is not be taken seriously.
Apart from that, there is one more issue I would like to disagree. Thats about IR. While I really dont know what kind of person he is, the more I listen to his songs , the more I feel he is the greatest composer. I dont think "isaignani" is a self-proclaimed title for him. He is India's most versatile composer. Hindustani,Carnatic, fusion,WCM, folk, pop, jazz, rock, vampish tunes, devotionals, semiclassicals, every mood, every emotion, every situation...he's done it all. A symphony, pure classical albums with the world's leading maestros, an amaizng sense of BGM, and a mind-boggling speed at writing notations, ......................... makes him a class apart from all other composers.
(Please do correct me if I am wrong. :-))
While its unfortunate that VJ was not used adequately by him, it is also true that some of VJs very very best songs (as far as I have heard) are IR compositions :-)

Naaz,
There are many pathos songs by IR which would have come out better with VJ. For example two songs from engEyO kEtta kural (nee paadum paadal ethu, thaayum naanE thanga iLamaanE). It is unfortunate but I wouldn't blame IR for his drawbacks. Even now it is not too late, he is still making music and VJ is still young in her voice. I wish someone would bring them together. Imagine VJ singing "pAttu cholli". I would have listened to it more than just once.
avr,
MIO is a treasure if one has the patience to dig. I realized that after KS pointed me to "mazaik kaalam varuginRathu".

A Lata song does not leave me with that feeling. I always feel that Lata always makes that imaginative leap, she reaches for the "soul" and gets it! That is why she was not mentioned. Absence, in this case, does not mean Oversight. Lata is always a bravura force.
Never once have I suggested that IR is anything but GENIUS. He is also one of India's most prolific and pre-eminent MDs. Tamil music (as far as I am concerned,) will always be referred to as : IR'ukku mun (Before IR) and IR'ukku pin (After IR) - His advent in TFM (and indian film music, in general) was epoch-making. So the point you make is not a disagreement, it is a reiteration. I glad you agree.
Regarding IR's titles - I did not say they were self-proclaimed or illegitimate. They are worthy, and they are also inadequate. The man is above two word descriptors in every sense. IR's sense of himself, and his place in TFM (in the early days of his career) was marked by many challenges. He had to prove himself to be more than just a one movie wonder (he was a wunderkind, but he was also facing the long established monopoly of MSV) and he did so with every new film. The adornments of titles are not uncommon in TFM (actors, musicians, poets) are all gilded with such accolades. My contention is more contextual: To understand why I say what I am saying you have to place IR in the late-70s and take into account the tough times he had in establishing a musical career. That's all. This is not a spot on his genius - it is just a corrolary.

Neel D,
In general, MIO, Dhool, raaga have good collections. There is also swara.com which is very slow, much slower than MIO. And then, there was swaramaalika.com which had collections as good as MIO, if not better.
