I think in those days all the music recording of all the movie in Telugu, tamil, kannada and Malayalam were done in Madras. Madras was like the hub of activity, I guess. And so, may be, all these music directors had to do was to call three on three different days/times to sing in three different languages. This central location for all the languages is precisely the reason for all the veterans being able to sing in all the four languages without having to travel too much.

Naaz/C V/ Kaumudi- mothamma enna kalaasradhunnu mudivu paniteenga :))
Btw, I listened to 'Kanasalu ninne'- lovely song. I don't think it has a Tamizh version. as I said R-N didn't get to do many Tamizh films.
But I did discover a similarity- the end of the pallavi where it goes 'Nannaane, ninnaane'(?) reminded me at once of the lines 'Nee engey, naan engey' from the song 'Malare ennenna kolam'- a haunting SPB solo from the film Auto Raja-1982.
Coming Auto Raja, (it starred Vijayakanth, btw), the film is unique, as it it has one song by IR (the enticing 'Sangathil paadaatha kavithai'-IR,SJ), and the remaining numbers by Shankar Ganesh. Of these S-G numbers, the aforementioned 'Malarey ennenna kolam'-SPB and 'Kanni vannam oothappoo'-SPB-VJ stand out.
Digging a little deeper, lo- what do we find- Auto Raja was a remake of a Kannada film by the same name and no prizes for guessing the MDs- who else but Rajan-Nagendra! S-G had just faithfully copied the tunes!
The kannada version of 'Malare ennenna kovam' is (its available in musicindiaonline btw) is 'Naliva Gulabi Hoovey'-again by SPB! R-N had obviously rewoven the 'Nannaane, ninnaane' lilt into the ending lines of the charanams of 'Naliva Gulabi hoove' (and 'Malarey ennenna kovam' follows suit)
Another bit of interesting stuff- 'Kanni vannam oothappo' is by SPB-VJ, while its Kannada equivalent 'Nanna aase hannagi' is by SPB-SJ. Listen to both- VJ and SJ bring their own indivudual touches which doubles our pleasure!
As I said earlier, R-N's biggest hit in Tamizh was 'Aadal paadal kaathal enbathu appodhu'a lovely, lovely song by SJ from Veetukku Veedu Vasappadi. If you want to listen to its Kannada original, the film Hombisilu has it, and this is a duet by SPB-SJ (again, of course by R-N): 'Jeeva veene needu'. (Kaumudi, does Intinti Ramayanam too have the smae song? If so, who sings it?)

Sorry that should read'Kanni vannam rojappoo; (its her 'Kanngal rendum' which are like oothappoo!) Btw, how bashful VJ sounds when she says 'Thogai meni koyyappoo'!

I love RN's 'thoda varavo thondaravo' , a sensual duet (SPB/SJ) from Irunilavugal film

Oh, Gosh. You guys are reminding me of all those lovely breezy duets I used to listen to on the radio in my childhood. Yes Saravanan, this Aadal paadal song has a telugu version in Intinti Ramayanam. It is called "Veena venuvaina sarigama vinnava" by none other than Balu and Janaki. Here is the link - it has all the intinti ramayanam songs: http://www.telugubiz.net/songs/search.php?do=list.tracks&col=al_id&val=157&sort=al
Such a romantic duet that is, especially the first three words of the song which use both the gandharams in succession gives a lovely feeling. And Janaki's voice is amazing. The telugu song again is a superhit. In fact, when we performed that song a couple of years back for one Ugadi function, people (especially old timers) were all enthu about it.

I don't know why, maybe it is the "breezy" thing which Kaumudi mentions, but I find RN songs (all the ones you have mentioned) to have a RDB sayal (in a good way.) The whole mood of the 70s, can be reduced to a certain "infectious" rhythm, and you know the song when you hear it. Shyam, RN, Salil Choudhuri, V.Kumar, G.K. Venkatesh, - All had their "lilting" moments, and the songs were all the more appealing for their melody. Not just "borrowings."
Another song in the Kanasalu Ninne and Thoda Varvo Thondharavo, is the IR composition from Battakkaththi Bhairavan "Engengo Sellum En Yennangal..." and Shyam's "Ananda Dhagam Un Koondhal Pookkal Theerkkumo (?)" You can even include "Mazhai Tharumo En Megam" from Manidharil Iththanai Nirangala? and "Agayam Thane Azhagana Kurai" from Soundaryame Varuga Varuga in this list.
All vintage - and a matter of good taste :-)

Could anyone very briefly tell me the theme of the song "cudaraaga oliyaaga" sung to perfection by Vaniji? Her voice in this song is as pure as the morning dew, and more so the aalaap in the beginning. I am no shruti expert, but every note seems right on the dot to the precision of a nanometer in that aalaap. Like the resonating sounds emitted from the sister strings of a veena or a sitar, when the instrumentalist plays a cent percent accurate "meendkaar".
My hunch is that the song has some devotional overtones. Maybe I am wrong! Anyone here? Also who is the composer?

One can take the music to ears, but can one make the ears discern? :-)
I'm committed though.
What has been lost in current film music (with the current generation of listeners and musicians) is a disregard for context, and a devaluation of "Art" in the name of "technology."
Music is the language of the Soul. One should resist and battle the impluse to muck with it at every turn!
Even if one out of five listeners hears and feels the difference between tab aur ab, it is worth the effort :-)

AVR- Sudaraaga Oliyaaga is a lovely song from the film Aval Sumangalithaan-1985. The film starred Visu, KR Vijaya, Karthik & Ilavarasi. I think the song was filmed on KR Vijaya (for whom Vani has sung many memorable numbers). It is a simple devotional song 'Saranam Saravananey, Arul tharanum Tamizhmaganey' goes the main pallavi- It is a prayer to Lord Muruga. (One of whose many names is Saravanan!). Music-who else but MSV?!

Other than "engum niraindha iyarkayil" are there any (good) songs in Idhu Eppadi Irukku? You can post your reply in that thread if you want to, or here.

I was just about to answer Vijay's query with an absolute blooper, and your post resqued me with good grace!
There's this song from Taxi Driver by SJ/KJY (and one of my all time favorites by this duo for IR) "Sugamana Sindhanaiyil" which also featured Jai Shankar and Sridevi. My memory always, at first, sends me to Idhu Eppadi Irukku. But your post confirms that I've not blown it this time (hopefully) :-)
I can only add my voice to CV's "pattru niraindha" request. Awaiting the "as usual" times here as well!

Among the Kannada songs, there is a duet with Dr Rajkumar - "Priyathama, Priyathama" - I don't recall the title of the film, but this song is still evergreen. "Besuge Besuge" is also another one Kannada hit.
