All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Thiruvasakam in Symphony!
I was wondering a few aspects about this musical project.
Why it has to be a public funded project?
Did the corporates say no to it, considering it will not be a commercial success.
Okay, in that case why has Mr.Illayaraja has to involve public money, can't he make an album out of his own money, Sell the audio rights to big companies like Sony.
When Rahman did Vande mataram he was backed by Bala and Kanika and later Sony got the rights for a huge price. Vande mataram was also an International project, its album was relesed in 26 countries.
Isn't Mr.Illayaraja not sure about the quality of his output that he's worried he may not recover production costs of the album?
May be they music company MD's knew his last product from Hungary was an ordinary thing like "Ramar analum Babbar Analum" so they didn't want to get involved in inception stages.
It is strange when he can produce movies why cant he produce his own album? Or atleast co-produce it with Tamil maiyam?
It's a novel thought to open a school of music but if the album doesn't sell well then how come he's going to generate the funds.
There are only 47 donors in the list, why are his dear buddies name Kamal hassan and Bharatiraja missing on the list.
Since the album is going to be produced in Hindi,English, Tamil and German, why has Mr.Illayaraja got to worry about the Sales? if he's sure he's gonna make something wonderful.
Its very clear he wants minimum risk and he doesnt want to play with his own money.
Is this a new way of doing business?
Okay lets predict they are making some profits, will the website put its revenues from all sources like Concerts, Audio sales, Rights etc.
They haven't mentioned anything about it, But why? If its a public project every single data has to be revealed.
So we really will not know Whats Mr.Illayaraja's Salary from the profits.
Whats excatly the financial role played by Tamil maiyam? are they going to have exclusive rights over the content or is it going to be shared by both Illayaraja and them, in any case Is Mr.Illayaraja paid an astromical salary from profits? or they are just paying the artists in hungary and Illayaraja is paid nothing.
Wouldn't any man who wants to contribute to this project or the so called Open project know all these facts!
My inference is - his dream would be accompolished - Making Thiruvasakam in Symphony, his personal monetary contribution is Zero, He has a chance to make profits, which will then be reused as funds for his music school.
Risk Factor to Mr.Illayaraja - Zero.
Profits - Yes.
Laurels - Yes from making such projects and re-investing it in a school.
Jeez, I haven't heard a better business venture than this in recent times!

Ok...guys...let me try and address all your questions...one by one...which I hope would help in understanding me as a person and my thought process.
Dravid didn't do it -
Can't understand you guys..really! What is a good film...in my opinion...a good film is one which provides good entertainment...and keeps you interested. Now..that doesn't mean it has to come from a Vishwanath...a Mahendran...a Palma or a Kurosowa. It doesn't mean it has to have a heavy theme...or a complex plot....or melodramatic performances...or mood/sombre lightings and a artsy type or very realistic feel to it. Movies like Kalyanaraman, Sakalakalavallavan, Annamalai, Nallavanuku Nallavan, Dhool and Sami and even Kaakichattai are good films in my opinion not only becase they were box office hits but also provided wholesome entertainment to all and sundry...whether you are from the so called..A, B or C centres..and more importantly....they were well made. If you at look at them all these movies could be categorized in to the "masala' type. Which is fine with me...masala movies can ge "GOOD" too! Now...there are movies which have been box office hits like Muthu, Rajathi Raja, Thenali and Gemini....but I would stop short of calling them good films....because there were aspects of these films which were not of expected quality.
What we need to realise is that the term "GOOD" relates to the "QUALITY" and not the "TYPE" of the film. There are good masala films, good melodramas, good love stories, good action movies...etc. There are EVEN good MGR films like "Anbe Vaa" and "Ayirathil Oruvan" and "Periya idathu Penn".
I enjoyed Kamal's Sakalakalavallavan as much as I enjoyed his Raajapaarvai and Avargal. I enjoyed Kaakichattai and Sathileelavathi as much I enjoyed Nayagan and Moondram Pirai. But I hated the likes of Guna as much I hated Vikram and Thenali.

I dont know abt aayirathil oruvan. I was coaxed into watfching it after many people lauded it as a classic movie.
I was only laughing at the the stupidity of the movie. like mgr saving puratchi when a tree falls on her with his two "strong hands". It was sooo cheesy.
I did like some aspects of it lke when nagesh says I want "paaayaaasam". amazing dialog delivery! but mgr saing vetri in a eureka eureka kind of way was silly.

Bala...on to your comment now. I have no idea of your age and exposure to Tamil cinema. Am I the one blindly making statements? Trust me, that is simply what I hate about some of the comments on this forum...so I will be the last to do it. You claiming that Rajini and Kamal has given more hits that Sivaji and MGR must be the joke of the century..even if it had been a short one. Ask anyone who knows the facts and history...they will laugh at it...icluding Kamal. Kamal or Rajni may not have acted in as many movies as Sivaji's number of hits. I don't think I have to explain why you can't compare collections across time periods. If you do, the biggest hit of yester years' collections willnot even match up to a current low budget film's costs. What matters is the "rate of return"...and when it comes to that MGR and Sivaji hits were miles ahead.
Though MGR was more like the stars of the present .... acting in only 2 or 3 movies in a year...Sivaji was a free spirit and didn't care a damn about the numbers. MGR had to do that to maintain the expectation and clout in the box office (note ...I am not talking about his popularity here) since his movies are very similar. But, on the contrary, there are years when Sivaji gave hits after hit. Two or three times, there were two movies of his had been released on the same day..and both became hits. can we even imagine this happening these days.
I would just give you one example (may be also to prove that I don't shoot in the dark) - look at 1972.
Raja (100)
Gana Oli (100)
Pattikada Pattanama (175)
Tharmam Enge (Flop)
Thavaputhalvan (100)
Vasantha Maaligai (175)
Neethi (100)
Now...this is not a one off thing as you may want to argue. This is just a sample. In fact, 1973 was even better....6 out of 8 were hits (100 days and above) and mind you those days they don't keep movies in theatres for the sake of reaching 100 days as MGR and Sivaji had nothing to prove to any one (except to each other...;-)).
For heaven sake don't compare them with the rest of the stars...it hurts when you start making statements without actually knowing the facts.

V...you are right...I shouldn't have had that in there...as I don't think I was eligible to comment on it. I didn't watch the whole of it. I have never been impressed by more than a hanful of MGR films but have enjoyed a few of his entertainers. I though I liked the parts that I had seen in Aairathil Oruvan. I saw some quality...and Bandulu was a great show man. I guess I gave the benefit of the doubt to him...which I shouldn't have without watching the whole film. Apologies!

Now ...on to Virumandi...guys...I don't think I am eligible to comment on it yet as I have not seen the film yet. Sadly, it is released in Australia in the theatres for commercial reasons. Kamal's recent movies had been big disasters and the Australian brought-up younger generation seem to be inetrested in Surya, Vikram and Madavan more than Older stars. The other problem is that it is a village subject...these kids love the city flicks. For the same reason..Vijayakath movies don't get released even if they are good. Rajni still attracts big crowds...but my gut feel is that it could be different after BABA.
So, I can't really comment whether it is a good or a bad film. But, my comment was mainly on the box-office aspect of it...which is not all about the quality of them film. However, most quality films do run well. I have made that comment that purely based on the stuff that I have read about the film and some of the reviews that I have heard and read. Based on my experience, it will not be an out and out hit...say like...a Devar Magan. It will not run every where and it will cover all sectors. Most Kamal films get good reviews...partly because there is always something different and uniques about kamal films...partly due to the hardwork put in by him and people want him to see some returns...and partly due to some thing else which I don't want to discuss in this forum! So, I was just trying to sound a warning not get too carried away. I have had enough experience in this...and to me...it will be an above average grosser. Now....I hope it becomes a big hit. It is good for the industry and good for Kamal...who needs a hit and a shot in the arm badly. Now what I don't want is that this film to be a Guna or hey ram and then become hit because of lack of competition....since that will not help Kamal. That is what happened with Thenali. I thought Thenali was an average film but its success surprised me...but Kamal go the wrong message...what happened was one after the other Kamal delivered cheap comedy flicks...which bombed. But, the timing is good for Kamal, if it turned out to be the best amongst the worst this season...then that it self will help and Kamal might get away. But....if it is genuinely a neat and uncomplexed and wellmade film...I hope it will be a huge success....it then deserves it! The only hope for me is that it is a village subjet so Kamal wouldn't have tried his usual 'intellectual' stuff. Also, there wouldn't have been much scope for it to get influenced by Hollywood movies that impressed Kamal. The chances are high that it is a genuine tamil film and not a 'western' looking tamil film.
ps.
I don't think I will watch the film soon as I would want to wait till the DVD is out to enjoy the technical aspects of thoroughly.
