i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
1.Vedha:i know he always go for a hindi tune in his films(mostly for Modern theatres). No alterations! he just copy a full hindi song !
best examble:Manam ennum medai mele(Gil tho ye kulu yahag)
2.MSV: i hear that(from Sujatha's book"Neerkumiligal") "thulluvatho elamai" was a song copied from english to almost all famous indian langages. Is there any other songs MSV copied?
3.Illayaraja:Even the GOD of MUSIC Raja sir did some thing like this.He just used that "I love you"style from BOneyM Sunny for "darling darling"in priya.I have heard a totally same song like "Kanavu kanum valkkai yavum" in Hindi also.(i forgot the film).
and i dont know who is the MD for the song"ehu pal vadiyum mugam! ethai parpathu than sugam".But i heard the same song in an english film.
4.ARR : i was told from my friends that he did copying intelligently.drum beats and some music styels from cassettes like "enigma, ace of base".And the humming before the song "thillana thillana" is a 100%copy from the film"the island of Dr.Mozeru".
5.SA Rajkumar : a lot of help from hindi! best example "mallikai puve malligai puve parthaya" from "didi tera thevaru thevana"
5.DEVA:hee..hee..the master.(better we see how many songs he did on his own instead of seeing how many songs he copied!)
like wise there is a lot of songs are copied from Tamil to Hindi also..
Now its your turn friends....

Balaji,
thats how the film industry is. u should'nt idolise or develop an emotional attachment to any of the artistes 'cause u doint know what dirty things are going on behind. go to rediff and check the list of celebrities owing millinos of rupees to the govt. u will find kamal and KJY's name right there along with the others.
artistes are either born as hypocrites or have hippocracy thrust on them;)

Vijay:
Thanks for responding. I don't expect these stalwarts to be perfect in personal/professional ways and I have no emotional attachment to any. (may be a little empathy towards IR.. but that is because he was axed due to some stalwarts' personal vendetta -- MR / KB and the Gang) These Stalwarts dislike of some values or govt laws are purely upto them. But my unhappiness is not that.
Imagine this situation: Deva re-tuning all IRs old songs and soon people will start recognizing those tunes as that of Deva's (With the current taste of Music lovers/producers/directors.. this is not a far stretch) and IR's 25 years efforts will soon be in the drain.
May be few people would care! But isn't that scary?
There should be some sense of devotion to the job these people do. Unless these stalwarts take a stand, nothing could be done in this regard. With the likes of Devas and SRs ruling the roast the picture is really bleak and the future looks bleak too.
May be my sole cry is not going to change anything.
Hoping situation will improve...
Balaji
It is hard for me to listen to a new song, without thinking of who/what would be its source.

I listened to Kushi Songs man Deva copied Maasi Masan Alana Ponnu beat for one of the songs. The whole album is a copy from IR or ARR. He is so cheap that he copies the Saranam from one old song and Pallavi from another old song. No wonder people gave him a name IlayaMan. IR should sue Deva for copyright
violations.

The begining piece in the film Roja for the song "Chinna etc" was a direct lift from "Newline cinema production for its Ad" if you have the seen the film RUSH HOUR By jackie Chan & Kris Tucker

The "Ba Ba Ba.." humming in the song in Apoorva Sagodarargal is "inspired" from the song "Ba Ba Ba Barbara Ann" of the Beach Boys (found this of all places in a TV serial where they played this song of teh Beach Boys).

so i dont think it is a copy.

It was not just the words ba ba ba, but the notes.

srk basically the chords might be same.
raja's song uses g d7 g d7th hence the harmony sounds some what same.
I would say it is a Perfect example of Inspiration.

I have a very odd question. If Deva copies from other languages people say "Copied ..." while if musicians like Rehman or Ilayaraja does that, they say "Inspired ...".
Why is that ?

a serious request to bb"
bb, is it possible for u to start a new section on copied songs in TFM? like 'songs of the month' we can have this as a permamnent section. iam willing to donate some mp3s of originals and there are many others here who can provide the tamil duplicates. what do u think?
atleast, it would be interesting froma music listeners point of view to see how MDS have been influenced and also how their idols are not as 'clean' as they thought they were;))
iam intersted very much. Pl. let me know.
i would also like everyone else's opinion and input on this.
even if we are not able to inform the original composer about this, atleast music fane who come to this forum would be aware of this and would definitely appreciate(or criticize;)).

Vijay(@hp.com):
The reason why people refer to Raja's or ARR's duplicates as inspirations is, in most cases, the repetition is unconscious and not deliberate. Whenever anybody composes, their scores are influenced by others' work.
When it is a direct lift (as is the case usually with Deva), it is called a copy and rightly so.
- From: rjay (@ brkfw0005.navistar.com)
on: Tue May 2 17:48:36 EDT 2000
SRK,
I think it is the opposite. Raja and Rahman
deliberately decide to copy a style or tune,
and they consciously work on it to transform it
into a unique idea. It is like retelling a
story in a new context. They add their mark
and ideas to the source idea and so it gets
totally transformed.
OPinions?

rjay,
ARR, I believe, has used many 'bits' and 'pieces' of music from others 'as is' in his songs to embellish them or developed a full fledged tune out of them. In the case of IR, these have been very few cases of this. In the case of ARR, these things have contributed a lot to his commercial success. I am afraid, ARR and Deva might vary only in degrees. The only saving grace being ARR did introduce a new way of making tamil film songs (albeit not his own style). Do you agree with this or not ?
