i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
1.Vedha:i know he always go for a hindi tune in his films(mostly for Modern theatres). No alterations! he just copy a full hindi song !
best examble:Manam ennum medai mele(Gil tho ye kulu yahag)
2.MSV: i hear that(from Sujatha's book"Neerkumiligal") "thulluvatho elamai" was a song copied from english to almost all famous indian langages. Is there any other songs MSV copied?
3.Illayaraja:Even the GOD of MUSIC Raja sir did some thing like this.He just used that "I love you"style from BOneyM Sunny for "darling darling"in priya.I have heard a totally same song like "Kanavu kanum valkkai yavum" in Hindi also.(i forgot the film).
and i dont know who is the MD for the song"ehu pal vadiyum mugam! ethai parpathu than sugam".But i heard the same song in an english film.
4.ARR : i was told from my friends that he did copying intelligently.drum beats and some music styels from cassettes like "enigma, ace of base".And the humming before the song "thillana thillana" is a 100%copy from the film"the island of Dr.Mozeru".
5.SA Rajkumar : a lot of help from hindi! best example "mallikai puve malligai puve parthaya" from "didi tera thevaru thevana"
5.DEVA:hee..hee..the master.(better we see how many songs he did on his own instead of seeing how many songs he copied!)
like wise there is a lot of songs are copied from Tamil to Hindi also..
Now its your turn friends....

I saw the movie "Mugavari" last weekend over the video. Thenisai Thendral bayangara multi-faceted.
One song is a direct lift of the song "That Thing You Do" by The Wonders, from the Tom Hanks directed movie "That thing you do" (I have this soundtrack, and people having the CD can verify). Another one is coutesy of BackStreet Boyz. Man this guy is atrocious. I wish I can ban him from movies.

prakash: just a possibility to explore! Do you know which Indian star is very popular in Japan these days? Yep! Super Star rajni especially for Muthu, Arunachalam, and Padaiyappaa. You know what Japanese people are famous for? Yep! copying. So it is not out of the realm of possibility that some B-grade video manufacturer used Muthu's music (oruvan oruvan) for a loop in a video game. Let us not sell ourselves short and feel that all 'copying' goes only one way. For a culture (east Asian) where 90% of the songs are Mohanam/ShankarabharaNam based, I am not prepared to readily grant great 'melody composing' talents!
bb: Mufasa saththu pOna udanEy, Simba 'pOnaal pOgattum pOdaa' nu paadara tune has been copied by MSV in paalum pazhamum:-)

The beat of Smayaii from KKKK is the same as the beat of a fast "chalne wale rukthe hai kahan?" song from pukar..

the opening guitar piece of 'july maadham vandhaal' is a direct lift from the opening lines of the song 'puttin' on the ritz' by Taco.

prakash:
Kann malargalin azhaippidhazh tune is inspired from the song "Money Money Money" of ABBA. It was pointed out earlier. Maybe Paul Mariat rearranged this score - he is not the composer for all scores.
I was listening to Deep Forest. ARR has been influenced a lot in style from these guys, esp with regard to the "pop" colorations which he uses in almost every song to accompany the tune.
He has also used the "Birds" piece in the prelude of Thillaana Thillaana (Muthu). I don't think it is a sample since it is a full fledged 4-minute piece in this album (with nothing else but that sound).
He has also been inspired by the title piece in this album (which by the way is the original for the bass score of "Gupt Gupt" of the movie Gupt). I am unable to remember which song is the inspiration, but the tunes are similar (if I remember rightly, it was a song sung by Unni Menon for one of those Prabhu Deva movies). Can anyone check up this?
In all these, the resemblance ends with one line.

Deva has> copied a song from The Lion King. It appears as the female chorus - "...oru naalum unnai maravene...some crap...some more crap...". I don't know how the song starts, and frankly couldn't care less ! The original sounds like some African "chant".

I think ARR lifted the tune for his "roja roja" song from the classic "sippi irukkuthu muthum irukkuthu", especially from the end of that song
"koduththa sandhangalil en manathai nee ariya naan uraiththen". Blatant plagiarism.

Chappa chappa charuga chalein from Machis is copied by Deva in Vallarasu as chekka chekka sevantha ponnu (something like this)
Engal veetil ella nalum karthigai by SAR is a straight lift from hindi song deevana dil hare kya ho gaya.
Ulaga azhagiye from pattali is a straight lift from Bechaniyan in GUpt

Hats off to deva!!!!!
Guys, from which film is the song 'rojaava rojaavaa'? i just saw it in suntv. isaw vijay and kausalya in the song and my guess is it is from 'priyamudan'. anyway kudos to deva for doing a great job of copying 2 pieces and then mixing them together. man, this guy should have been in software with a C++ job!!
the second interlude is a copy"mix".(deva's version of remix). he has borrowed the scream from the gupt title song and has mixed with the starting prelude of 'one night in bangkok' from Murray head. the music comes when nasser and co look at kausalya's photos in the song.
that's not the end. i'll tell u why it is even more amazing. a flute interlude from the same song by the same group has been used by deva once again in the second interlude of 'april mathathil' in vaali.
its simply mind blowing stuff!!!
I have the song with me in .mp3 format and i wish i could upload it somehow. only then people can appreciate deva's mixing skills;))

I guess u r talkin' about "Pooja va Pooja va" song, actually its a english tune copied by pappilahiri to hindi as "ageya ageya" in a mid 80's hindi film (mithun starrer??), then it was Deva's turn to do the GLOBAL FUSION!

Guys,
Following the posting by Neels in some other thread about a Kungumam article in which Kamal talks about an album called Passion by Peter Gabriel, I searched and found a link which has some song samples of this album and was surprised to find the following.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000OR5/richmsdiscograph/103-0182432-3247036
The 3rd piece in the list of the samples, "Of These, Hope" is where probably "Anbe Anbe" from Jeans has been copied by Mr.ARR

Deva did not leave even SivakumarKumar Sharma. A dance song from 'Minsara kanna' was lifted (almost 60%; no interludes copying or similar tunes ;-))) from SKS album called Water. Man, this guy is a Parasite!!

Deva uses very liberally Western Classical pieces in his BGMs (not copied or recycled, or even reproduced by his orchestra note by note, but JUST PLUG & PLAY!!!)
It's like how we used to stage our skits in school: play a cassette in the background. :)
He has used Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' in many movies.
Unfortunately, half-baked review team members of magazines like Vikatan praise him for his BGM!!!

Guru,
Yes, you are right! The basic rhythm of Anbe Anbe sounds pretty close to this number.
Is a complete version of the above song from 'Passion' available somewhere on the Net so that we can compare better?

I was tuning to OLI 96.8 and I heard a song from 'Buddhi Sigamani' , The song goes like 'Nesam Valratha...' The song resembles very much like some old IR song.(Ofcourse the MD is DEVA).
(No great song, but he has copied even the interludes from IRs old songs. Ofcourse the Chorus is cheap and IR will never has that kind of Chorus)
Is there no way to stop this kind of blatant copying. I am ashamed that SPB & Chitra gave voice to that song. I don't know about Chitra, but hasn't SPB earned enough(????). Shouldn't he refuse to sings such songs?
I am really upset with this kind of unprofessionalism!!
