It has been mentioned on more than one occasion that YSR is the MD who will take ARR's place. YSR has produced many hit albums lately using new, fresh and funky styles of music. I believe that this statement has been proved by Yuvan after Dheena, Rishi and Thulluvatho Ilamai. When compared to ARR's recent Thenali and Star we can see that YSR has taken the lead in this race to be the best. YSR has been signed for many new and exciting projects so I can see that he will be the block in ARR's attempt to regain his position as No.1 in TFM.
What are your thoughts on this?

Cosmician,
My point is not to start any feud here but just
to indicate the double stds that has crept into this forum when it comes to analyzing ARR and IR's works. For IR, the so called unbiased music lovers try to find whatver fault they can and for ARR, they try to find out whatever good they can to the extent of saying that ARR is too good in recycling.
Please go to the other thread of IR's recycled hits where Mr.Common Friend has tried his level best to list 2 songs of IR which supposedly have been recycled from his two other songs but I didn't find any similarity between the songs for which Mr.CF says that he is doing it so that people will not write about ARR recycling his hindi songs into tamil albums like Star.

Iam not a ARR fan at all. but I dont mind him recycling in differnt languages. You and me would have done the same.
Unless the movie needs very exclusive music, say like devar magan, for other music like love duets and dance routines there is no problem in recycling.

kk, I feel the same too. But BrightGal is talking about various versions of the same song. I think IR also has done things like this, but I think people notice these things with ARR because the number of albums he does is very less.

Except ar rahman, i dont see any other tamil md working in a lot of projects in hfm. Well, one or two, but they r few and far between. Its also known that most people in both areas dont listen to their counterparts' music. Except a few maybe. So, as someone pointed out, Star's songs are new to most of the people in tamil nadu. So they dont care if it was recycled from used aluminum tins or from thakshak... all they want is the music.
As to recycling, there is only one who I know for sure recycles and u know who. Becoz all his songs sound the same.I am sure people who listen to telugu fm should be able to add more.
Other than him, there is no one else, I know of, who recycles that significantly to have a whole thread devoted to his recycling.
But if u start, all rahman songs sound the same et al which are the well-known facts in this df, please my request to u is to kindly skip this post and continue with ur quest.

Athi...
Come on...the same thing has been happening vice-versa maybe even more...so there is no need to get so upset..defend your favourite MD or provide counterarguements with rationality and logic...no use in just complaining.

So the whole point here I see is,ARR has the max. pressure.....?

Travis,
Working more projects in HFM doesn't mean that u have to reproduce them in other languages. Pl. accept the fact ARR does more recycling. Dont give some useless comparison of IR here. A person who did music for more than 750 films may naturally recycle his some songs in other languages. But for a guy like ARR, it's no point in arguing about this...
Apart from recycling, most of the ARR songs look similar and u ARR fans wont accept that fact at all. Many songs like aayiratthil naan oruvan from iruvar and ohoho kikku aeruthae from padayappaa, sutthi sutthi vandheega from padayappa( again !!! ) and saranam of thaandiyaa aatamum aada from kadhalar dhinam, etc... List-la nirayya irukku...
Dont say only because of pressure ARR is doing this. Sattila irunthaa thaan akappaiyila varum.. Ithu naan sollalai, pazhamozhi!
By the way, coming back to the thread, YSR compared with ARR??? I think he's some what unique in his stuff!

I think one significant reason why recycle rate is quite high for ARR is-well, he falls in love with his own composition having worked on it for so long and seems to be in awe of himself.if you look at MSV, IR or KVM, once they are finished with a compostion they move on.when once asked what was his best composition,IR said that he is yet to compose it(this is different from his favorite pieces).if recycling is 10 percent of other md's for arr it is as high as 60-70 pc.to me , all his songs remind me of atleast one of his or other's songs.
when you compose the same love situation for some 2000 songs, there is bound to be some repitition-listen to oru naal unnodu oru naal-composed 25 years back and manjal poosum from freinds-both love situation-but can u point out any similarities?

One strange thing, I noticed about ARR songs is, sometimes he repeats/recycles parts of the songs. Does he have a library of 'parts' or what ? To assemble them by mixing and matching.

one thing about ARR is bothers to much about target audience and try to estimate their taste.
This is evident in his interview. like..
"South likes classical, north like simple tunes." -CNN world beat.
"In tamil only some tunes becomes a hit. so it better to use familiar sandam. trying make it complex tune would sound very mechanical" - kumudam on why he reuses few sandams.
For a person who introduced new sounds and made it to be accepted by the whole contry, this looks like he is trying to restrict himself by estimating the listners.
Is hit is ultimate goal?. you cant make ooruvittu oru vanthu kind of songs expecting a hit. But it makes a good song in a movie. Likewise Mari mari ninne.. was appreciated only by few. It wasnt a hit like other songs in the movie.
Its nice to see that ARR cares about the listner, but preconcived notions might only like restricting himself.

yaaro :)
kk, ARR cant help it.
He is from the ad industry, which talks 'target audience', 'niche' etc. So he is bringing this to the music 'industry'.
BTW, Here is an excerpt from Merle Haggard interview- an ageing country music superstar, in the SanFrancisco Chronicle sunday edition.
(this is a repost of mine from another thread)
-----------
With these musicians these days, theres a lot of catering to the bubblegum side of life rather than paying tribute to the older guys whose music they used before they had any of their own. I dont see that happening, more from a lack of thought than a lack of desire. Mostly, I hear people want to know how much money does it generate and does the desired age bracket like it. We've got to give them their pablum. y'know.
It is going away and it is worthy of being passed down. But the quality of things we did compared with whats going on today ..His voice drifted off.
All the patterns have been laid and cut and all the trails blazed, I guess, he continued. They just take the beaten paths and make them ELECTRONICALLY perfect. (The last two words are spoken with utter comtempt)
Everybody's always wanting to know how to get into country music, Haggard said. I want to know how to get the f--- out of country music.
-------------------------------
Does this apply to TFM ?

Kiru..here we go again..
The above observation cannot apply to ARR because he is not creating albums for himself...he is composing for given situations in a film based on inputs ffrom the director...and expectations are very high when he is employed...he has to deliver...it is no longer a world where the market comprises of just 2 cars, 2 brands of bubblegum, 1 premium suiting etc... the producers and directors come to ARR expecting excellent cassette sales and hits...this may cause as you had intelligently explained :

yeah..thats so true kiru...just listen to Ghananan..Ghannan from Lagaan..the beginning sounds very similar to Velli Marale from Jodi...even my dad who is not an avid music listener noticed it off the bat!

cosmician..ennappA..nAn ethu sonnAlum..ARR paRRi thappA sollugiRatha eduththukkira..If all somebody has to say about a MD is "I like his music", "I love his music"..we are not going any further with our understanding of that musician..For eg. I dont say I like or dont like YSR's music.. I say it is full of energy and youthfulness..you see what I am getting at..

The song ghanana ghanana in Lagaan-it was supposed to be in Raag "Megh malhaar"-coz it is a song ,praying for the rains-and since this Raag does not have that much scope,I guess it was bound to be similar to "Bol sajni"from D.S.R since this song is also in the same raag.
But even I feel the same beats at least could have been avoided.
