Is ARR Running out of Stuff?
Topic started by Ramesh Vaidhyanathan (@ gengw.gensym.com) on Fri Mar 13 15:14:51 EST 1998.
All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I listened to VandeMatharam in which ARR recycled his own tunes from Kizhakku Ceemayile and a touch of a song from Indira.
Also ARR's recent movies for big time producers like Ratchagan and Iruvar (except one song) and Dhoud in Hindi did not have any notable music. Remember ARRs last hit Minsarak Kanavu music was done long time ago.
If for a major album for Sony released on 50th year of Indian Independence, ARR cannot produce original music, then I have to come to the conclusion that he is running out of stuff. I heard that ARR is planning to cut down on movies and concentrate more on albums. Thus he will have to produce less and earn more.
Right now I do not see any difference in the quality of music produced by ARR and Karthik Raja. In fact I think Deva is doing a better job of providing consistant good quality music.

'Duet' was dubbed in Hindi, but how many saw it ?
It was a wash-out, like many dubbed movies in Hindi.
Actually I don't know what the point of dubbing in Hindi is, considering it didn't do well in Tamil.
I quite like the redone "Anjali Anjali" of "Kabhi Na Kabhi" (inspite of Kumar Sanu).

I do not know how many of you feel the same.
The song "Anbennum malaillae akillangal" from
Minsarrak kanavu resembles "Kalyana malai kondadum
pennae" from "Pudhu pudhu arthangal". This may be a sheer coincidence or both are based on the same ragam. (any light?).

Might be old news for most of you guys,
here is an excerpt for a review of "Anokha.." which was in the news some time ago..

Thanks to Sreeni Seelamantula for pointing this page out..

The highlight of the longplayer however, is not to be found here but in A R Rahman's haunting ‘Mumbai Theme'. Establishing itself through soundtracked strings, which sits menacingly in a cradle of drifting flute rises - epic horns introducing a full orchestral progression. Although classical music is more than a little unusual in a compilation of dance music, the beauty of the piece warrants its inclusion - in a class above most of the material I've heard in the last couple of months with regards both production and arrangement. Simply stunning

Hi folks,
Another song I felt A.R Rehman was inspired by Illayaraja was Chandiranai thottathu yaar from Ratchagan.
The music resembled Nenjukulle Innarunnu from ponnumani.
Try to play these songs simul..

Buddy
Similarly, I think the Strawberry Kannu has a lot of inspiration for style and pattern from the Avatharam song of IR '........Nandane Ohoho, etc... Man, what a composition. If this one was composed for a hollywood, they would have instituted a special award for innovation and something called 'Interlude' which is pure magic!!!

venus :
"Anbennum malaillae akillangal" - Anandha Bairavhi
"Kalyana malai kondadum" - Thodi
No similarities at all. Anandha Bairavhi comes from Karahapriya and Thodi is a Melakartha in itself.

Whatever it is ? But ARR's Threads are always
not running out of Stuff :-))))

Geetha,
Kalyana malai is in the Natabhairavi scale(20th mela). And Anandabhairavi can be thought as a janya raga of the 20th that uses dha2 as a foreign note.
I have no idea about the claim concerning the two songs, since I haven't heard the Minsara Kanavu song.

Geetha and Hari:
Thanks for the information. For some reason both
the songs resembled the same (at least the first few lines).
Buddy:
Last week I bought a CD with songd KM and Ratchagan. I also felt that Chandirani thottathu's
rhythm resembles "Nenjukkulle" . Moreover, if you lisent to the song, the stanza 2 and 3 follows
the karutthamma "Vanndimmadu ettivechu"
"Mannae poi varavae maa maramae"

I know this thread is about ARR, but I want to throw in a twist to Geetha, Hari, and Venus' discussion regarding "Kalyana Malai Kondadum". When I first heard this Ilayaraja song, I was reminded of an old Sirghazi song,"Kallilae Kalai Vannam Kandaan". You raga gurus let me know if they are similar.
Back to the thread: Did anyone find similarities to ARR's "kucchi kucchi raakkamma" and the old song, "Senthamizh Thaen Mozhiyaal Nilavena Sirikkum Malarkodiyal"?

I see a lot of discussion of ARR's compositions being similar to old tunes here.I would like to add one more info. I think some of you might of noticed this.In the beginning of the first interlude of "chinna chinna aasai",there is a flute bit. When I first heard it,I was reminded of that most famous shehnoy bit in the interlude of "aalaya maniyin osayai naan ketten".For doubters, just hum these two and see the similarity.
Any comments ????

Guys :
I was watching TV yesterday and I saw an ad for Erols internet service. No talk only rhythms music . And guess what : the rhythms are 90% similar to the rhythms in ARR's 'romeo Attam pOttAl' from Mr.Romeo.
The movie is more than a year old. I am not sure about the ad.
My guess is that both guys have copied from the same source OR more probably both of them bought the rhythm from guys who sell rhythm loops.
Has anybody else seen/heard the ad ?
My feeling is that more than copying ARR buys such rhythms from commercial sources.

Correct me if I am wrong. I was under the impression, all MDs sample music pieces ( from various sources including their own) and mix, recreate `new' music. More info on how this is done is welcome.

You mean to say ARR purchases various Rhythms. I mean, do you mean he plays fair? That is something very interesting to discuss in this forum. I remember the Tillana Tillana song's has a troubling rhythm as if the rhythm ran away from its original home and found its way to a really agitated auction house and was eventually sold to a rich rhythm collector. Hmm... I like this idea of buying Rhythms. Keep it up PG, this clears up some mystery clouds. The beat which ran into the Thillana song, if I may point out, is originally from the home of Dr.Alban, who had some nice rhythms for display and not anything more, if I remember right.
So, there is a Kothavalchavadi for Rhythms. Are they stringed also? Must visit this Loop. Thanks PG. Pretty loopy stuff.
By the By, (used to a potentially famous word in South Indian films) seems like no one is running out of stuff as far as ARR running out of stuff is concerned! In fact, we are introducing more stuff compared with ARR! Hmm...

Coming to TILLANA TILLANA....
the song begins with an "unusual' humm by Sujata. It is periodically repeated in the song...
I thought it was great..... UNTIL I heard a Deep Forest number...
Rehman, come on......

Hi
couple of things:
1. one reason why 'anbennum mazhai' and
'kalyana malai' resemble is both of them
use a five-beat pattern (thatha-thakita;thatha-thakita)
which is not as common as the four-beat pattern
but has been used in many songs.
Azhagu malar ada.
I am sure trained musicians will name this.
Another offbeat beat is the 7-beat pattern
used in 'Pattale Bhakti sonnar'
(thakita-thakadimi)
I was told there are nine beat, 13 beat patterns
used in our music, where as the western music is
very poor, they choose either a 4/4 or 2/4
or 3/4 or 6/8. I have not seen anything else.
2. When modern music equipment is sold,
it is sold with lots of demos and samples.
When I heard 'mangtha hai' from Rangeela
I was amazed by the very elusic percussive
rhythm. It has so much of a-pattern and so many
tonality.
Last week I was totally suprised to see the
exact percussion track in the
music of one Mr.Lynn, a multimedia composer - released in 1995!
3. Rahman admitted in an interview
that he got the 'Arabikadaloram' drum loop from
Dr.Alban's CD and was surprised that Alban himself used it around the same time!
So what! Composers do get ideas from various
sources. Their value is in fitting music to situations and to other parts of the music to
get a guaranteed emotion! Originality is in
positioning things together.
In fact I was surprised to hear a western country song and I heard the Punnagai
mannan (Kalam kalamaga) violin trio and piano
- not the same pieces but very very similar.
But the effect
is much better in the Raja's song!
More later
