Song of the Day: maasila nilavE from ambikapathi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maasila.rm
- An evergreen classic sung by TMS and Banumathi. Music by G.Ramanathan. Lyrics by Ku.Ma.Paa.
- This is not one song, but has three distinct pieces, "maasila nilavE", "anbE inbam" and "vaanamingE bhoomiyingE". The song runs for more than six minutes as a result. Apparently, this was the first time Mukhari, a raagam to depict sadness, was used in a romantic duet.
- Manisekaran notes:
In the old Ambikapathy (MKTB) there is a song called "Chandrasooriyar pOngathi mARinum veezhinum nmakkenna" . When the new Ambikapathy (Sivaji) was produced, G Ramanathan wanted to make the new Ambikapathy popular among the fans of the old Ambikapathy. So he used the above tune for the new Ambikapathy as follows: "Maasila nilavE nam kAthalai magizhvOdu manilam koNdAduthe"
- 'kaNNE unnaal naanadaiyum kavalai konjamaa' from the same movie: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/285.html

bb, a classic song !!! Good choice !!! The mukhari song is 'vAdA malarE'. This song starts with great pomp in Maand. The first stanza is in Maand as well. TMS of the 50s .... kEtka vENdumA (in the positive sense....before MS interjects :) As the story goes, Bhanumathi's singing was all over the place in the first few takes as a result of which GR had to call for retakes. In the subsequent take, TMS erred much to PB's chagrin and she is supposed to have let loose a disparaging remark about the then 'up and coming' TMS.
A great song nevertheless and highlights GR's creative genius. A composer who could have effortlessly stepped into the 'light' mode but was swept by the VR wave, post bAga pirivinai and pAva mannippu.

Nice song to hear. This movie is produced by Al Narayanan, elder brother of Kanndaasan. In this movie except one song all were written by Ku.MA. Balasubramaniam. The one song by KD in the format of Bharathiar's " Kanna Pirane" i.e. Kanni Ila manae' buy Bhanumathi.
This masila is picturised in colour. G Ramanathan's music is fantastic. Of course NSK's song and Two immmortal TMS bhakti songs ' sintanai sey maname' and ' Vadivelum mayilum' were equal to MKT's range. Actaully GR experimented with TMS to sing like MKT. The song of ' Satre sarinta kulale' by TMS was more or less equal of the same song by MKT in the old Ambihapathy. From this picture onwards, TMS stadardised the same pattern of singing for Sivaji.
Nambiar as Ottakuttar and Nagaish as Kulothunga solan were worthseeing. Directed by none other than P. Neelakantan, who was a favourtite director for MGR. I think he has directed only two films of Sivaji, namely kalyanam Panniyum Brahmacahri and Ambikapathy. The director of Photography by Karnan was a surprise. The angles that he used in the film, especially, count down songs were very interesting to see.

Hello everybody, The song Maasila Nilave from Ambikapathy is set in Raaga malika. The First stanza Pallavi is set in MAAND and The first anupallavi is also set in same raga. The 2nd anupallavi Anbe.. Inbam Enge.. INGE ... is set in its parent Raga i.e., Sankarabaranam ofcourse in western style(major scale) . The charanam 'VANAM INGE BOOMI INGE VAZHVU THAZHVENGE and VENU GAANAM THENRALODU SERNTHA PINNAALE" ETC
is set in Punnaga varali.
RE; The classical climax songs by TMS - 1.SINTHANAI SEI MANAME- KALYANI
2.VADIVELUM MAYILUM THUNAI- Sankarabharanam
3.THAMIZH MAALAI THANAI SOODUVAR- KAMBODHI
4.Satre sarindha kuzhaleyasaya tharala vadan thutre yasaya kuazhaiyoosalada' is set in KEDHARAGOWLAI
5.Natrenozhuga natana singara nadayazhagu potrerirukka purappatethe thalaiyalangaram- is set in Saveri.
Re: the sinthanai sei maname, followed by Vadivelum and followed by Tamil maalai sung in KALYANI,SANKARABARANAM & KAMBODHI shows the exquisiteness of MD Ramanathan and expertise of TMS because these 3 ragas are akin to each other.
Kalyani is varying with Sankarabaranam by a single note M1/M2 and again Sankarabaranam29 is varying with Kambodhi (a janyam of Harikambodhi-28
by a small swara variation. The song is immortal and rendering is exemplary. That is the reason that even today after 50 yrs this song is well appreciated by one and all.
The Kadavul vazhthu "AAYA KALAIKAL ARUPATHUNANGINAIYUM" is set in Naattai(36)
ofcourse this film AMBIKAPATHY IS A TRENDSETTER for TMS who was given great songs in the coming years after this.

Song of the Day: poovE nee yaar solli from thaNiyaadha dhaagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/poovenee.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘poovE nee yaar solli’ from thaNiyaadha dhaagam, sung by Malaysia Vasudevan & S.Janaki. Lyrics by Uma Nagabhushanam. Music by A.A.Raj.
The stupendous success of oru thalai ragam (1980/ Mansoor Creations) created stars overnight out of all those enterprising newcomers involved in the film and they were all immediately flooded with offers. Producer E.M.Ibrahim was enthused enough to have another go, and set about directing thaNiyaadha dhaagam under the same banner. But this time he didn’t have the support of Robert-Rajasekar, who had started directing films on their own. thaNiyaadha dhaagam was more than a year in the making, and was released in 1982, only to end up a discomfiting debacle. I have no clue about its actors, but remember Delhi Ganesh as the only familiar face among the myriad visages that peered from the record cover.
It was Radio Ceylon’s repeated airing of the film’s songs that kept thaNiyaadha dhaagam from making an unobtrusive exit from public memory. This song, in particular, lingers to this day in the memory of avid radio listeners of the early 80s. I often wonder about the lyricist, the obscure Uma Nagabhushanam who penned 5 of the 6 songs in the film, and whether any other film song came her way ever again..

Aakula Appalaraju hailed from a small hamlet in Andhra Pradesh. He was interested in music from a young age, and trained under Buchi Gopal Rao. Practical financial considerations made him take the dreary job of a food inspector in Bobbili. But his love for music eventually won, and in 1951 he landed in Madras, then the citadel of South-Indian celluloid fantasies, where the untiring dream merchants peddled their varied wares.
With the initial support of veteran S.Rajeswara Rao, Appalaraju (who had by then shortened his name to A.A.Raj) bagged a few opportunities to play the harmonium/ violin in some Telugu films. Impressed with his skills, Master Venu took him under his fold, and Raj learned the nuances of composing film music during his years with Master Venu, assisting him in the music of many memorable films like kaalam maaRipOchu (1956), engaL veettu mahalakshmi (1957) and manjaL mahimai (1959). His expertise in writing notations, coaching the singers and conducting the orchestra made him a sought after assistant to various MDs, and Raj found himself working with the likes of Chalapathi Rao, V.Dakshinamoorthi and Baburaj. He did compose music independently for 3 Telugu films, but his work in those films- Devudichina Bartha (1967/ Devi Productions), Panchakalyani Dongalarani (1969/ Sri Saraswathi Chitra) and Vikramarka Vijayam (1971/PSR Pics) went largely unnoticed. Unperturbed, Raj continued assisting MDs like Sathyam and G.Devarajan.
A.A.Raj got the opportunity to assist T.Rajendar in composing music for the songs that Rajendar had penned for oru thalai ragam, and also the bgm for the film. In fact, Vividh Bharathi used to initially credit the music to both TR and A.A.Raj, but Raj’s name mysteriously didn’t figure in the subsequent announcements. The Inreco Record, however, gave joint credit to both of them. Look at the credits mentioned at the end here:
http://shopping.chennaionline.com/inreco/prodpop.asp?value=IDTF5142
While TR went on to earn manifold laurels as an imaginative lyricist and talented MD in the following years, udhayamagiRathu (1981/ Jayamurugan Art Creations) was the only film that came A.A.Raj’s way. And he went all out to prove himself as an independent MD of unquestioned skills. ‘avanukkendRE vandhaaL azhagu radhai, azhagu sindhum poonkodi kOthai’ (VJ) is an elegant creation, and the two SPB/PS duets, ‘naan unai mandRaadinEn, nee enai koNdaadinaai’ and ‘manjaLum maalaiyum varumO, en vaazhkaiyil vasantham tharumO’ are marked by lilting passages. The outstanding number from the album, however, is SPB’s ‘KaNNa un aruLaal yaavum iyangum, kanavugal nanavaaga thunai purivaayE’- an exquisite semi-classical delight with breathtaking progressions wherein the nadaswaram and violin find ingenious use and SPB & Kannadasan come together to give vibrant life to a mistreated musician’s wondrous vision.
* * * *
thaNiyaadha dhaagam came the next year. It had 6 songs in all. VJ's 'malaraadha malarellaam malaravaikkum' heralds so bewitchingly in bhoopalam the serene beauty of dawn. ‘unnai maRakavillai naanE, ennai maRandhadhellaam yEnO’ would surely rank among the best songs in B.Vasantha’s chequered career. ‘yaarukitta solluRathu, deivam oorai vittE poivittaal, yaarukitta solluRathu’ has a suitably subdued TMS having a sardonic shrug at the imponderable twists of destiny. Malaysia Vasudevan makes merry in ‘aaha malligaippoovE, aaha maadhuLampoovE’ (Lyrics: Kaaraikkizhaar). The chef-d’oeuvre is SPB’s ‘aval oru mohanaragam, enai vittu thaniyE pirindhittappodhum--’. Punctuated with grand sitar-filled interludes, this poignant song has SPB honoring A.A.Raj with a magnificent rendition.
‘poovE nee’ is such a charming composition, liberally stocked with alluring arrangements and polished progressions; the graceful prelude beginning with SJ’s dreamy humming, and the remarkably refreshing structure of the pallavi itself make us immediately conscious of an uncommon composer having an innovative, uncluttered thinking. I get the feeling Uma wrote the imaginative lyrics first and then A.A.Raj set them to tune. Janaki adds to the appeal of the song with her inimitable embellishments, the delightful brighas that adorn her each repetition of ‘poovE’, the ‘Oh, come on’-ish coquetry with which she cuddles to his ‘kOvil kalasam pOl en dEvi’, and the stifled gasp of pleasure that escapes her at his ‘ivaL ponnudal sivakkattum en karam pattu’ all bespeak her consummate artistry.
* * * *
A.A.Raj never got to compose music for films again. He has set to tune some non-film devotionals. The Sri Raghavendra Suprabhatham, written by J.H.B.Acharya and sung by PBS & SJ is one glittering instance of such ventures. Raj is also an active member of the Cine Musicians Union that strives for the welfare of the instrumentalists who work for various MDs. His tenure as its president in 2001 was marked by many significant measures being implemented.
Now 74 years old, Raj has not yet called it a day. He cheerfully assists any MD who summons him. His thirst remains unquenched though----the big break still tantalizingly dodges him, and will probably continue to elude him forever.
