Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)

Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

Saravanan,
Nice post covering some of the finest solos by VJ.
The actress who sings "kanthanukku maalaiyittaal" is Bhavani. Bhavani is a classical dancer who likes MGR. MGR who works for a Pannaiyaar loves Latha and marries her. For some reason MGR and Latha are now living in Bhavani's house and it is their first night. Bahvani, sad over her failed onesided love, sings this song playing the Veenai. Just before the song or during the song, MGR Latavai madiyil vaithu konjuvathum, Lata MGR maarbil sandhanam pUsuvathum, ayyO... sanga ilakkiyaththuk kAdhal ellAm thOtradhu pOngaL. :-)

Saravanan -
Please refresh my memory.
Are doing a solos / duets highlights from the 70s? Or is the solos compilation (which dominates this wonderful journey,) meant to be somewhat more comprehensive about her work with MSV? Or are you running in tandem (somewhat, again) with the webpage and its offerings?
A quick clarification from you would be good. The reason I ask, I am not sure if you want "missed" input from me/us...and am a bit unsure about how you've set this up. Thanks.

Naaz-
Welcome back!
As regards your query, my intention was/is to chronologically trace ALL VJ's songs in tamizh films, both solos and duets- I am dwelling more on songs I know more about- and would sure welcome all inputs- be it additions, corrections or suggestions. (We commenced from 1973, and having crossed 74 and 75, we are now in 1976) As I have already requested you all, let this be a collective endeavour.
Neel, thanks for filling in the details. Who was this Bhavani- Has she acted in any other film?
I vaguely remember a Bhavani in the film'Aval oru pachchai kuzhandhai'- Are both the same?
Vijay, that's a tall order, indeed. But I'm sure it possible- at least an exhaustive list of MSV's films should be possible. Please give me some time-
Naaz, what say you? Shall we give it a shot?

Oh!Manju was indeed by MSV.A forgettable sridhar movie.Prob started the "Sridhar fall".Just before this Alaigal (Vishnuvardhan,Chandrakala) was a great Sridhar mvoie!

What does "Maarbin agalam kundrangal, malargal illai naan vandhen" mean in aaramba kaalam oru pakka thaaLam athu thaan kaathal paNpaadu?
Did we talk about cinema paithiyam? I thought this was MSV. I'm particularly interested in how the songs line up vs. Guddi (i.e., the song situations not the quality).
Naaz - I heard part 1 of the interview where she emphasized (at least that's what I felt) that the 3rd song in Guddi was replaced. This one I'd have loved to hear her hum since it's probably lost to us now. Is this the situation for which aaja re pardesi was used (madhumati, Salil Chowdhury, lata)? What was the tamil equivalent?
Part 2 of the interview was garbled for some reason - I'm going to d/l it again to listen to it.

Saravanan -
Let's begin with Bhavani and her disappearance from tamizh films. Yes, she is the same one from Aval Oru. She also appeared in Bhadrakali (second, meaner lead.) I am sure there are a few more B movies that followed. Can't recall their titles right now.
I cannot help you with the years of missed songs. But I can happily add to the list with all the info I have ( I will not be able to pull off scenes like you do, though) and perhaps you can confirm dates (now, how on earth would you do that?).
Let's start with these MSV solos: (definitely 70s, second half too, I am pretty sure.)
Mannulagil Indru Deivan Irungi Varugirar - Punidha Anthoniyar.
Pon Vanna Veenai Poonthendral Ragam - Chiththira Chevanam.
Veru Idam Thedi Povalo - Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal.
Malairani Mundhanai Sariya Sariya - Orey Vanam Orey Bhoomi.
Regarding the MSV list request: I really can't match your memory or cataloguing acumen. I can add a few bricks here and there, but you've got to build most of the fort - and hold it too. Unfortunately, most of my music does not have year notations and so you can't really count on me for bibliographic certainty. If that's a deal, then I will come on board (on my time, of course.)

Chithira sevvaanam- 1979
Sila nerangalil sila manithargal-1977
Orey vaanam orey bhoomi-1979
Yes, all are late 70s and all excellent songs. Let us first complete 1976, and then we can pass on to these great numbers.

It was indeed the Madhumati song. A cover version. I believe there were some copyright issues that could not be resolved. Saravanan might know the tamizh song.
I hope you get to hear a better version of Part 2.

Didn't mean to rush you. Now I get a sense - you are going to cover the other MDs of that period (76)- and return to MSV chronologically, yes?
Keep going.

Oh Manju: It came in the wake of all those adolescents-gone-astray films, all after Hare Rama Hare Krishna. These films were all made to titilate, but with a veneer of moral gloss. The trend started in the west with films like Friends and Going Steady, and was quickly picked up and indianised by Indian producers.
Oh Manju (Hindi counterparts Ehsaas, Bobby etc.) was a coming-of-age story on a very skimpy costume budget. Master Shekar (it was his first major adult role,) and Kavitha (starlet debutante) have indifferent parents and tons of money. They elope and run away. Many bad things happen (as do dream sequences and nudity ) and Kavitha, I believe gets pregnant and then some major growing-up happens, all in the last four reels. There is this scene, I recall, when they both are on the run. They predictably have to dash across railway lines, and just as predictably Master Shekar leg is trapped in the shifting tracks. That same predictable train is seen in the distance, nearing with ferocity, but never (ever) fast enough. Kavitha runs around, flailing, distraught by the minute. Her red top, in a brainwave, becomes a red flag - ta- da! (but we know that's really not what made the train stop!)
Unarchigal was another one in this mould. Full of Morals. But that's not why the Houses were Full.

Hi! Now that the Madhumati song aa jaa re pardesi is being discussed, I have a comment. There is a
Tamil song by Seerkaalzhi and Janaki which goes
as vaalzhkayin paaDam.. or so. The charanNam
of this song is similar to the charaNam of the
Madhumati song. The question is when was the
Tamil movie released? Greetings! - J K M Rao

Saravanan, I have been looking for the green
pastures of 80's, but it seems the train's
stuck in the mid-70's for many months.

Saravanan and other friends,
1. With the little Hindi I know, the 'Mausam' lines are: " Dil doondta hai! Aakhir wahi! Fursat ke raat din!" (Meaning: Manam thedudhe! Kadaisiyil avatraiththaan! Oyvaana (leisurely)iravugalaiyum pagalgalaiyum!)
2. 'Payanam' (by Vietnam Veedu Sundaram??) was some kind of a 'Madras to Pondicherry' except that the journey was by train! In the Railway Station, Nagesh and someone else sing a song in 'Atana' "Neram vandhdhadaa! ambee!"
3.Saravanan, I don't remember the year of " Ullaththil Kuzhandhaiyadi" -Seerkazhi & VJ- 'KaNNukku nee oru kannippoNNu! En karuththukku nee veRum pachchai maNNu! uNNadiyo soRu uNNadiyo! (neeyum) ottaaram paNNuvadhennadiyo'.
Pl. don't miss this song in your coverage!

Ullathil Kuzhanthyadi was a Moondram pirai original i think.(Although Khilona /Engiruntho Vanthal also had this idea - JL screaming to every one "Avarukku Gnabgam vandhidhuchu" but Sivaji wondering who the hell she was!)

Saravanan,
Reg. Avaley en kadhali, the artistes ftg. are Jaiganesh and Sathyapriya. The Sudha dhanyasi touches of this sons makes it memorable. As you say the cascading flute immediately follg. the pallavi is mesmerising.
Have you covered this song something like ..Kadhal deivam kanden.(KJY)..naan saranam saranam saranam (VJ)..Kaval deivam vanden(KJY)..pakkam varanum varanum varanum(VJ)(sorry words not sure)by MSV from Gaslight Mangamma?

Sundar's post about the Jaiganesh Satyapriya jodi (it did occur to me that that was the pair for the Aval Oru Pachchai song - thanks for confirming! - but I held back, not being absolutely certain) the latter also had another film in which I believe there was a VJ solo or duet:
The film was : Manjal Mughame Varuga (It has Vijayakumar and Satyapriya, I think) and was also part of the "show-and-tell" set. Satyapriya had the misfortune (or good fortune,) of being in the company of the Y Vijayas, Jayadevis, and Meeras - somewhere halfway between vamp and villy most of the time!
