sk : Kalakkiteenga! You have analysed the song so well--!
Whenever I listen to the lines- paadhi manadhil dheivam irundhu paarththu koNdadhadaa
meedhi manadhil mirugam irundhu aatti vaiththadhadaa- I realise how true it is- I am sure all of us have experienced situations in everyday life where these two influences were beckoning, and each with its own charm! (I have to be honest and admit that at times, I have found the evil more tempting than the good- like Snowy (of Tintin fame) who always had this difficult choice to make :))
Btw, do you remember Kamal's parody of this song in Maharasan?!
Of course, you all know that Kannadasan wrote this song at the time when he, along with EVK Sampath, came out of the DMK and many attribute the lines to his relief at coming out from that party.
a.a.- Please give more details about 'Vaanil nilaavume'. And who is the brave MD who composed this song in those days? I thought the female voice couldn't be Jikki as that characteristic quaint quiver was missing here!

Saravanan, as I keep hearing anecdotes like these about Kannadaasan I sometimes wonder if at all he wrote lyrics for film situations :-) Seems like many of his songs were based on real life situations that happened to suit the particular scene in the movie as well. Interesting.

nice song selection for today. but this song is everyday in my mind repeating again and again eversince it was discussed in the Kannadhasan thread by Mahendraraj. somehow this song got into me - paathi manathil paattu irunthu aatti vaikuthadaa.. and today its in the SOTD.
as saravanan mentioned earlier here mahendraraj also said in his posting that this song came at the time when kavinjar came out of DMK and naathikam. the relief of being able to overcome the peygaL of naathigam and the joy of experiencing God's presence is well brought out in this song.

An absolutely wholsome song.Sivaji s superb expressions,KKD s awesome lyrics,MSV-TKR s grand effort ,a memorable song.KKD poses you this problem -bringing out extremely difficult philosophical thoughts in dead-simple words..."Pirakum munne iruntha Amaithi" "Irantha pin varum amaithi" -Amaithi for the Aanma-soul..Silirpu!
I am taking Satyakeerthi s writeup as a printout.Savagasama padikkanum,Romba kashtapattu nalla ezhuthiyirukkirar and padipatharku rombave kashtamaga irukkirathu....!
for ordinary men Mirugam lives with one till the end and so "tamed" is the right word so "Adangi" suits better than "Azhinthu vittathada".
For Udhaya s eyes only!
How about VM s "Konjam Mirugam Konajm Kadavul" in Thiruda Thiruda and "Kadavaul paathi Mirugam paathi" from Aalavandhan?A 1993/2002 version of "paadhi manathil deivam irundhu...meethi manathil mirugam" -looks ok?
I have some thoughts on Kavidhai, honestly influenced by Sujatha s opinions on the same....we shall have a separate thread "Ethu Kavithai?" and share our views.

bb,
Great song. I like the charanam lines best. Thankfully TMS stays on track. MSV-TKR build this introspective mood around the song that withstands the charanam breaks. I don't know about the atheism angle, that's too literal an interpretation. The pallavi always seemed like a "Thina thandhi" headline to me. I feel Kannadhaasan could've done better.
OISG,
Ethu Kavidhai sounds Great! Let's do it. Appidiyae Edhu Kadhai-nnu sethukittaa Sujathaavayum saethhu kizhikkalaam. (Okay, I was going for the gold here, I know there are plenty of Sujatha fans here.)

Song of the Day: enna thavam seidhanai (aalankuyil) from Parthiban Kanavu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aalankuyil.rm
- Vidhyasagar's latest album is Parthiban Kanavu and contains some outstanding songs. I got a chance to listen to them recently and was blown away by this number. Harini has sung the song very well. Some of the bhrigas that she does are very good, and this might just be her best song to date. The album itself is another jewel in the crown of Vidhyasagar, who has proven to be the most promising music director in recent times. VS' work in AnbE Sivam, Run, and this film are as good as it gets these days.

- Some reviews in that thread:
5.Enan thavam ( harini ,Srikanth)
Starts witha pure carnatic tune ,then slowly turns to folkish carnatic ( of course there is no term like that ) ....A nice enjoyable song ..I read that this song is similar to "Sipi irukuthu " ..No way .But this is definetly creative song ...The hero says a word ,the heroine describes that word ....9/10..
Alankuilkoovum rail is the best song in Kaapi raagam.
aalankuyil padugayil (enna thavam seithanai ) is nice tune, lyrics and rendition. Harini shows good transition from a carnatic prelude to light ,film singing and back to swaras. The flute &violin interludes are awesome. The Q&A type of lyrics describing trendy and traditional interests of Tamil is unique . Lyrical contents "aaraam viral ", "kUnthal kuzhanthai", "nam nAngu kaNNil thOndrugindRa oRRai kanavallO?' are very much VM'ish.
Enna Thavam - in beautiful KAFI - The song follows in this Raga, after the Carnatic rendition by Harini - stunning! Great work by Vidhyasagar!

This is a nice song but kanAk kaNdEN from the same film (k.j.y) is better than this. pArthiban kanavu is the best non IR-ARR album in recent times.

bb - thanks for uploading another great melody!!
this is definitely one of Harini's best - if not THE best!!
Her voice sounds so matured and she handles the song with so much ease - her strong carnatic training/background comes in handy! Great song by VS!!

I think 'Enai Enna seithaai..' in Ivan is bit better than this parithiban kanavu one. May be because it has srikanth's voice pausing everytime.. i was laughing when he pronounce 'Vekkam' as 'Bekkam'

Song of the Day: muthu muthu thErOttam from aaNi vEr.

- A vani Jayaram / Shankar Ganesh classic to get into the weekend. Lyrics by Pulamaippiththan (?). VJ's singing is very special in this song. I am not sure what the situation is, or who the actors are. Seems to be another introspective song like "mEgamE mEgamE". The end of the charanams, like "badhil nee thaan kELaayO", are also poignant and reflective points, like "enakkoru malar maalai nee vaanga vENdum, adhu edhaRkO?".
- Vijay wrote, "every line of this song evokes feelings of longing for someone u love.though it's been a long time since i listened to these songs the tunes are still fresh in my memory. ".
- Thread on Vani Jayaram: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/25521.6859.02.29.28.html . Saravanan has been writing a long series of articles on Vani Jayaram in this thread.

bb- A great song to listen over and over again and be spellbound in the weekend! Thanks--
Vivekananda Pictures’ Aaniver-1981 had brilliant performances by Sivakumar and Saritha, with Poornam Viswanathan playing an excellent cameo. It is a story of a young girl (Arukkani?) from a lower class rising high to become an IAS officer. Her friend from childhood goes to jail and comes out as a grown man-Sivakumar. In spite of the difference in their status now, her love for him remains intact over all these years. But he is awed at her education and post, and develops a feeling that he is no match for her.
She longs for his love, yearns for his touch, throbs with unfulfilled passion-- --
Muthu muthu therottam-
ennai moham thalaattum--
Endhan dhaagam--
endru theerum?
Idhai nee kettu vaa thendraley--
Nenja vaanathil-
ninaivu megangal-
naalum oorgolam pogum--
Inba ragathil-
iravu nerathil-
paadum paatondru thedum--
adhan peyar thaan viragam;
endha dhinam thaan vilagum?!
Bathil nee thaan kelaayo
bathil nee thaan kelaayo
Kadalil seraatha--
Gangai Engundo--
innum en indha mounam?
Uravu thedaadha--
ullam engundu-
ennathaan undhan ennam?
Endrum ilamai inimai--
Indha thanimai kodumai--
Endhan yekkam theeraayo--
Endhan yekkam theerayo—
Among S-G’s best ever creations- the guitar is used so subtly throughout the song, and conveys the ‘viaraga thaabam’ mood in such a gentle, moving way. VJ sparkles, as usual. Her mellifluous voice brings to melancholic life the all suppressed longings of the heroine. It is not a coarse or a seductive invitation; it is a gentle and heart-rending reminder to him not to neglect his duties as a husband. How much feeling is there in ‘Indha thanimai kodumai’!
The heroines of Tamil films have generally expressed their unfulfilled physical desires only in an indirect manner- Remember Manjula in Marupiravi bemoaning her unconsummated marriage in the moving song ‘Alaigaliley thendral vandhu’? Or Revathi, lamenting her wretched widowed cum virgin state in Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal-‘Azhagu malaraada’?
Here, she sends the breeze to ask of her man when her thirst would get quenched- she implores the zephyr to return with a reply. Like it is a natural course of events for the Ganges to merge with the Bay of Bengal, so is intercourse between man and wife- Oh, why doesn’t he understand this?
Other songs in the film were MV & co’s rollicking ‘Maniyadicha soru, ithu maamiyaaru veedu, kaliketha keera kozhambu’ and the Rasputin inspired ‘Naan thane oru pudhukavithai, en ennangal naan enniya vannangal’-VJ.
