A first hand report by A PERSON IN in ARRYG about hyd. concert.
--------------------------------------------------
The Unity of Light concert at Hyderabad was a grand success..The show was simply superb...The stage set and the sound was great!! The show started at around 7:30 PM.. The was compered by Ali khan who seems to be a popular person in the TV circuit..
The show started with some excellent music which slowly fused into "Oruvan Oruvan Mudalali" rendered by SPB...Only the first line was sung in tamil and the rest of the song was sung in telegu.
The next song was the title track of Bombay Dreams..I do not know the name of the person who sang it....he was accompanied by ARR..
Our Man gave an intro speech and hummed a few lines of mustafa mustafa(the words mustafa were replaced by hyderabad!)..
The next number was "Oh Humdum Suniyo re" from Saathiya - sung by Srinivas, Kartik and one more person (the same person who sang Bombay dreams title song earlier)..This song was sung partly in hindi and partly in telugu..
Then there was a small talk by the compere. He then presented Vasundara das.. She along with Sukhwinder Singh sang "Ramta Jogi" - taal
The next song was Saathiya....title track.. by Sonu Nigam.
Next came Udit narayan and Mahalakshmi and they rendered "E Ajnabi" - Dil Se..
The next song was "Chupke se" from saathiya sung by Sadhana Sargam and Srinivas..Srinivas sung in telugu..and sadhana in hindi
The next track was Satrangi re - Dil se sung by Sonu..This song had some dancers performing..
Next was Lata Mangeshkar's Entry.. She and ARR were felicitated by he Governer of AP Surjit Singh Barnala and Home minister of AP- Devendar Goud..
Lata Mageshkar then rendered "So gaye hain" from Zubeidaa. This song was dedicated to Kalpana Chawla..
Lata Mangeshksar then sang "O Palanhare" from Lagaan along with Udit Narayan.
The next song was "Khamoshiyaan" from 1 2 ka 4 which was sung by Lata M and Sonu.. Lata Mangeshkar started this song with a very nice Alaap..
Then entered Hariharan...he hummed a few lines of "Uyire" - bombay in telugu and in hindi..
The next song was "Vennilave" - "Chanda re" from Minsara Kanavu.. this song was sung by hariharan and Sadhana Sargam (sang in hindi)...Hari sang a few lines in telegu..
The next song was "Kadhal Rojave" - "Roja Janeman" sung by SPB and Mahalakshmi in both telegu and in hindi.
Next was "Radha kaise na jale" - Lagaan rendered by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. This song had a superb intro music by naveen (flute).
Then our man gave a small talk and introduced Rashid Ali (Guitarist). Both of them along with Sivamani performed a Rap version of "Ooh La La La"...which was superb..
Hariharan and Mahalakshmi then sang "Kurukku Chiruthalvalae" - Mudhalvan in telugu.
The next song was "Mitwa" from Lagaan and was rendered by Sukhwinder Singh, Sadhana Sargam and Udit Narayan. This song had some dancers performing..
Next was "Hai Rama" from Rangeela - sung by Hariharan and Mahalakshmi. Hariharan rendered a superb Alaap in the beginning as he always does!! This song also had some dancers performing...
The next number was "Rukumani Rukumani". This song was partly instrumental and lines "O O O O" were sung by ARR and Kartik..The song then fused into "Mukkala Muqabla" and was rendered by Kartik and Vasundara Das in hindi..(Only a few lines)...This song was then fused into the BABA rap song...(B to the A to the B to the A).. I do not know the name of the person who performed the rap on stage!!!
Then we came into a small break where the Unity of Light Video clip was played on the big screen...
After the break, ARR and Sukhwinder sang the "Wedding Qawali" from Bombay Dreams..
Then SPB gave a small talk in telegu and was all praise of ARR.. he compared ARR to Sachin...He said "Sachin never speaks...his bat does the talking...in the same way ARR never speaks...his music does all thr talking!!!!!" SPB then rendered "Anjali Anjali" from Duet in telegu along with Gopika Poornima.
The next song was "Journey Home" from Bombay Dreams..This song was sung by Rashid Ali.(Rashid Ali was born in Hyd...a small coincidence as he sang this song in his home town)..
Then Sonu Nigam hummed a few lines of "Ishq Bina" from Taal..
He then sang "Mera Rang de" from TLOBS...this song was simply superb to listen with a live orchestra...
The next song was "Swasame" - Thenali sung by SPB and Sadhana Sargam in telegu...
Sadhana Sargam then sang "Dil hai Chota sa" from Roja...This song had a totally new music (same tune) and sounded great ...The tempo of this song was faster than the original one...
Then Udit Narayan and Mahalakshmi rendered "O re chori" from Lagaan.
Lata Mangeshkar came back and sang "Jiya Jale" - Dilse.. This song had some dancers performing..
The next song was "Eashwar Ya Allah" from Pukar..sung by Lata M. This song had a lot of school children performing..
Mahalakshmi then sang "Kahin Aag lage" from Taal.. This song too had some dancers performing..
The most awaited song was then sung by Our man - "Dil se re" . He sang the last line of the song in telegu...
The next song was "Shakalaka Baby" from Bombay Dreams sung by Vasundara Das.. She sang much better than Preeya Kalidas.. This song also had some dancers performing on stage..
Sukhwinder Singh and Rehana then sang "Chaiya Chaiya" from Dil se..This song also had some dancers performing on stage..
Our Man then sang "Maa tujhe Salaam"..
The final song was "Ja Na Ga Na" and was sung by all the singers including Lata M.
Overall around 40 songs were performed..The artists who did not show up were Shankar Mahadevan and Sujatha..The concert ended at around 11:30 PM.
The concert was mind boggling...i was in seventh heaven...an event which i shall never forget in my life...the only disappointment i had was that there were no tamil numbers in the concert...especially Vellai Pookal..I hope i am luck enough to attend another ARR concert in future...
Three cheers to OUR MAN!!!

Benengal Unperturbed
--------------------
The Forward Bloc is demanding deletions from Shyam Benegal's Netaji --
The Last Hero. They want scenes like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's
marriage to an Austrian and his aircrash to be removed from the
script as these are 'controversial.'
The party, which Netaji founded, may ban screening the film in
Kolkata. Unperturbed, Benegal says, "I don't think the Forward Bloc
is aware of my script. I am not interested in Netaji's personal life.
I want to portray him as a nation's icon."
Netaji features Sachin Khedekar in the title role.

Waiting for the music
THE `UNITY of Light' tour has a group of unhappy golfers to thank for its present venue, a ten-acre grassy area surrounded by lush greenery. The A.R.Rahman concert, which was supposed to blast off at the Madras Race Course grounds, will now light up the Central Polytechnic-India Pistons grounds at Taramani instead since golfers at the Madras Race Course felt the concert preparations would interrupt their game.
Members of the `Mahesh Memorial Fund', which is organising the Unity of Light's Chennai show to raise funds to help treat cancer patients, seem thrilled about the `setback'. "The new ground is more level, the trees around make a natural buffer zone and since there's not much construction around, the sound will travel better," says one.
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who is a trustee of the `Mahesh Memorial Fund,' walks about the ground enthusiastically, despite the blazing afternoon sun, in a jaunty baseball cap with `Mani' emblazoned across it, surveying the workers chopping and sawing.
"The Unity of Light tour is travelling with their sets, so all we have to do is create the basic stage on which they'll set them up," says P. Jayendra, also a trustee of the Fund.
However, there's a lot more to staging a concert for 35,000 people than just conjuring up a glitzy stage.
With the help of Shriram, who's used colourful charts marking everything from seating to entrances to food stalls to organise the venue, the organisers seem to have everything covered though.
Shriram's seen to it that the sitting and standing sections are on different sides so that you won't have someone with a big head and bigger hair blocking your view all evening.
There's parking space at the surrounding institutions and even a shuttle service from the parking lots to the venue. The organisers are also trying to organise a special bus service from various points in the city.
The long hours, intricate planning and sweltering afternoons spent assessing the site will pay off on the 21st, but the real rewards will come later when the concert lights up cancer wards - in a completely different way.
