what is happenin to the forum. dull for 3 weeks or so? ok, here is a irrelevant topic, but it is a betting game kind of.
Been following Shyamalan' involvement in hyping and marketing of this latest film. some "Signs" that it could be Unbreakable unlike crop circles. Shyamalan is more a marketing guy than a film maker, and seems to enjoy the attention also. I can see he is disguising his real basis (only aliens from space can scare white people into believing in God, etc....) behind shoddy endings deliberately probably to burst the bubble around him before it got too bad. I guess, he is feeling cooked, even a light music type film Signs made money, so he doesn't have to think and make much effort as he has figured the audiences also are not thinkers. My feelings, Village will have a punished opening collect less than 99 million. OR, it could have a super opening and go 200 mill if the audience forgives his hype but likes his cool attitude. How long can Shyamalan simmer like this with supsense thriller romance drama etc.., unless he breaks out of this spiritual suspense and move on to musicals?????? I have a feeling MNS could survive by introducing song-n-dance-comedy-suspense thriller-family-drama from Chennai itself if The Village stinks. IR' Symphony may prepare the audiences world-wide for such possibilities. Again, do you think IR has a great Symphony for Thiruvasakam as in Symphony Symphony? or How To Name It on Symphonic Orchestra, which will take the rest of the world a few centuries to even figure out what the heck. Anyone has comments about these two geniuses, one trying to break his genre bubble for which he is caged almost like a freak, the other just plain centuries ahead before the world can catch up with him? Will MNS have "contrasting" ideas left and should he not take to musical movies to dish out new stuff? Because MNS has an acute sense of music, no doubt and I can bet his many deliberately slow movies could have done better with some musical moods. He is like Balu Mahendra without IR.

vijay, spur of the moment genius, no dope. cannot repeat this type of analysis. hope this topic goes on until we see Shyamalan coming calling for IR and a romantic-comdedy-thriller-7 songs-suspense etc... eetc... in Tamil itself. that is what i am trying to "put it" Villager plus Symphony style music, utlimate thriller gl_lobal like
just having some fun, man. waitin for the Thiruvasakam Symphony, so time pass here.
but serioulsy speaking, the dynamics for Shyamalan is going negative. he has a lot of pressure to be mediocre and not be a smart outsider type complex going on in him. it is evident in Village scripting etc.... basically, he knows he is too good, but he is scared basically of himself. like IR wanting to avoid all attention to focus on more complex works, Shyamalan is tryin to avoid attention by diluting his output not to look too good in Hollywood, where currently IC chips are the brains and the emotions

vijay, the point is, you thought i was on dope, (no offense taken, sometimes i feel like one) but look athe postings, from shyamalan and IR it has gone back to basics, Rahman vs. IR. from where to where/////

// ARR has done dance( yakir thiri, bailamore), reggae ( lucky lucky, no problem), village ( songs from karuthama, yelelo), jazz ( vaanila, songs from duet) //
What if music is not genre-fiable in the first place ??
Guitar Prasanna says - What can we call Raaja’s music? Tamil folk melodies meets Carnatic music meets Hindustani music meets 70’s disco music meets Bach meets electronic music meets etc etc.. What is amazing is that finally it bears a patent/trademark of homegrown Raaja. It is not Bach, it is not Earth, Wind and Fire, it is not Carnatic music, it is Ilayaraaja.
Couldn't agree more with him...you got lots of ppl doing dance, jazz, reggae etc, but only there is only one ilayaraaja...

chris,
This line only shows your ignorance.
How about listening to a few Ilayaraja albums before starting an argument?

Chris,
As a starter, have you ever listened to the following film songs of IR (very few samples from the 1000's that he composed)?:
-uRavenum pudhiya vAnil
-poongAtRu pudhidhAnadhu
-paRandhAlum vidamAttEn
-madai thiRandhu
-endRendRum AnandhamE
-aruna kirana
-ennai thAlAtta varuvaLA
-thakida thadhimi
-azhagu Ayiram
-azhagiya kaNNE
-poomAlai vAngi vandhen
-shenbagamE, shenbagamE
If so, under what genres can you classify them?
Now, a sincere request:
In addition to Teja's suggestion of listening to a few IR albums, can you please read the tons of pages in hundreds of threads in this forum analyzing the various aspects / genres etc of IR...thus coming to some basic level of understanding of the music of the legendary composer?
If you're willing to do so, then we can probably discuss on who can handle what etc...you seem to have heard only ARR and not much of other composers lest you won't make such blanket statements based on a few specimens...
BTW please don't mistake that we don't listen to or appreciate ARR's works...FYI, most longtime DFers here have listened to majority of ARRs works (as well as MSV's, KVM's and many others both in TFM and elsewhere, including that of the popular and not-so-popular-but-classical western artistes)...
It's always wise to comment on what one knows and not on what he/she is totally ignorant about!

village ( songs from karuthama, yelelo), jazz ( vaanila, songs from duet) //
That was a sweeping statement folks. Vaanila (JAZZ!?????) and songs from karuthama (Village!!!, dont know what the heck that is). Might be that the fellow who posted this message, needs to hear some original JAZZ and original FOLK based songs before making statements like this :)

Sorry if i've offended some of you guys, but i just personally feel ARR has more variety, and maybe i do have to listen to more IR albums,as i have listened to more ARR. IR is a genius, but i'm just saying he cannot appeal to international audiences as well as ARR can. And this ''fellow'' has listened to original jazz, vaanila is jazz.

Vaanila according to some might not be jazz, but it definatley contains jazz elements.

Chris, you can also include the 2 female solos from Iruvar under songs that have Jazz elements.
But the best Jazz-based TFM song IMO will always be "varavendum oru pozhudhu" by MSV composed in the mid-60s for Kalaikovil. I listened to it fairly recently and yet it still blew me away. You can listen to it at Musicindiaonline or in the dhool SOTD archives.
As long as IR gets to do the same old village stories like Kaasi, azhagi etc. he would recycle his own tunes and interludes and he wouldnt sound different. He needs better variety of movies to work with and more importantly better directors to push him . Chris, listen to the album "Anjali" by IR if you havent yet.

"only aliens from space can scare white people into believing in God"
Gyan, is this a fact!? To me, it sounds like a purely racist remark! IT sounds like the message you're trying to impress on us is that white people are atheistic, and can only accept nonsense as fact.
For SOME 'whites' it is true, I accept, and also for SOME 'blacks' or 'grays'.
That said, the point is you should be more careful in posting such statements.
