OK friends get ready for my long narration of the NY TIS project-Intro event
Part 1.
Dear Music Fans,
It finally happened this Saturday, May 22, 2004 @ NY Ganesh Temple Hall, one of the most memorable events which I would cherish forever in my life time.
Before I even proceed with details about the event, I should thank again Mr. Shivraj and Ms.Nivedita Shivraj (the niceest couple representing NY Tamil Sangam and Raagachitra foundation respectively) who did a splendid job in making this event possible with their valuable time and efforts.
I have no words to thank Dr.Sankar (representing SSSSA, the team behind the TIS project here in USA), I couldn't believe my eyes when I met Dr.Sankar in the temple with Maestro, the dedication and hard work this person has put in promoting this historical project is extraordinary. THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE TASK...PERIOD.
I am still in a state of pleasant shock because of several reasons, first the whole program was arranged and executed in a very short period of time with everyone praising about our efforts, and we should thank the great audience for being very cooperative and highly receptive. Despite my three 24 hours Intensive care coverage in the last week I think I was able to spend my time because of the mere feeling that this is one of the historical project and it is being done by the great Maestro who has given us enormous amounts of treasure, pleasure what ever you call it as, thro’ his magical music and who has always been a great Idol of mine since my early childhood.
Let me narrate the program and write my comments (with a sort of evangelistic attitude towards this mission)
It all lies in “what we believe and the faith we have in it”, “TIS” is one such project and as SSSSA put it above it is happening, it will happen and the dates are finalized for the initial recording at Hungary as told by Maestro on more than one occasion during his visit this time, a great speech by Maestro about the project ( delivered by him during NY program) will be available soon in mp3 format at the official site www.raaja.com and every music fan should listen to feel it from their hearts, it is just mind boggling the whole concept and the reason why Maestro is doing it for us which I am pretty sure will remain as the greatest treasure ( pokkisham) for Tamil for ever.
Maestro with the US “TIS” team ( Dr.Sankar, Vijay, Hari and Ananthan) ware received at the Temple premises around 6 15 PM, with our introduction ( he remembered all of us from our previous meeting) Maestro and others were taken for a complete kovil dharshanam with an archanai in the temple, IR did the archanai on Karthik’s name.

contd....Part 2
Soon after that we followed to the Temple hall by then lot of fans and well wishers had gathered in front of the temple, couple of them took pictures, Maestro whispered to avoid any sort of TV/Press, media interviews, and the attendance at the hall was already building slowly, Chief Guest, Prof. TV Gopala Krishnan had already arrived by that time.
Both the stalwarts greeted each other and were escorted to the stage (yes the stage was very simple we had only three chairs with no table, Maestro was absolutely comfortable with the arrangement)
The program started with an excellent prayer song by, Ms. Samyukta Shivraj followed by a formal Welcome speech by Mrs.Nivedita Shivraj.
There was a special bonus from Ms.Devi (singer, daughter of Prof. TVG who was introduced by Maestro to film music), Devi sang the fabulous Thevaram “Kurutha puruvamum” (the last bit of “ Raakkamma Kaiyya thattu”) followed by IR’s song “ Enakkoru Annai” song ( from IR’s Devotional song on Moogambikai).
This was followed by the felicitation speech by Prof.TVG, he started with great praise and admiration for Maestro. (For all those who were discussing about who was the “Guru” of who (in other threads), we got the answer, TVG indeed was IR’s guru for some time.) TVG did mention that Maestro IR used to learn carnatic music from him at his house but he never felt he was the Guru or IR was his Shisyan. TVG spoke about IR’s extra ordinary hardwork, dedication and of all his greatest quality of being very simplistic, he appreciated IR’s humbleness despite great success. (Ellam senjum naan edhuvum seyyaliye engira panivu).
Initial few minutes, TVG was non stop praise for IR’s music, how it reached every person in TN, how his music took everybody’s heart and soul and staying in them and would stay as some of the greatest music forever. He remembered how IR used to invite him and other Carnatic musicians/singers to his house on occasions /navarathiri days to treat them with great hospitality. When he expressed that he wanted to tell in front of audience about something about IR’s work, he turned back at IR, IR said, “ungalukku manasule irukkaradhe appadiye sollunga namba thaniya meet pannambodhu music thavira vereduvum pesaradillaye, musician manasule le irundhu vezhiye varadhu thooymaiyaanadhu aenna anga Isaiya thavira vere edhuvum kudiirukkaradhulle”
He continued saying, IR is a perfectionist, only GOD is considered to be the perfectionist, but Raja is a perfectionist in creating his music. At one point, he mentioned Kadavul padaitha adhisaya piravi avar (Raja).
He mentioned about how Maestro has been having this thought of making an international center (school) for music in Chennai since his early days when he entered tamil film industry during the early years of Annakili (for almost 30 years), that Maestro had mentioned TVG several years ago and for which IR had purchased land long time ago and most importantly IR has not forgotten his desire and ambitions which he had 30 years ago.
TVG concluded his speech by saying this will be a historic project for Tamil/Tamilians, and he is extremely confident that TIS will be very successful and remain as a treasure for all of us and that he vouches for that in the Ganesha temple sannidhi, and said he wished great success for Maestro on this project and his idea on the International music center.

And then came the turn for the most anticipated speech by Maestro, he started with “ Naadu vittu naadu vandhu vazhandukkitturukkura ungalai sandhikka Naadu vittu naadu vandhu inge indha medaiyile ennai niruthi vaitha Iraivanukku nanri therivikkiren”
Some comments from his speech,
He started addressing his Guru /Shisyan relationship with TVG, He described what is to be called a true Guru? Although TVG never felt him as his Shisyan, IR always felt TVG as his Guru.
IR mentioned during his initial few minutes how his schedule used to be in his early years ( He is a true workaholic, starting some days as early as 4 am in the morning till late in the evenings) while he was assisting GKV .
His entire speech lasted for 21 minutes, of which he spoke about the project for almost 13 minutes with references to
1. The power of music in making even the ordinary lyrics/songs reaching the heart/soul,
2. Some philosophical thoughts as what is final intention of all of us after having born on this earth, “birth is a disease”, and how we get rid of the disease
Preventing literary treasures from vanishing and safe guarding these treasures to reach our younger generation
He posed a query about “thaalattu paadal” by mothers to their kids in these ages
3. The greatness of our country and Indian soil which has produced countless
Munivargal,Aazhvargal, poets, siddhars, naayanmaargal, etc… etc.. it was very touching, IR almost broke out with tears while mentioning the “Kaantha sakthi” of India
4. Thiruvasakam and it’s greatness, he mentioned about how valuable and great is this collection of hymns from this book, which when read as a simple text itself is enough to make anybody melt and that even without any music these valuable poetry/hymns are some of the greatest treasures left for us by people like Maanikkavasagar.
5. His thoughts about Manikavaasagar, he infact sang a song written by himself about Maanikkavasgar
6. He sang another bhakthi song which goes like “En ooru shivapurm paralokam perumburam…” it sounded like it was written for Indians living away from their native place ( NRIs)
7. Objective of TIS project,
I may not be doing a good job narrating the entire speech by Maestro, I hope “Thoppus” will host the Mp3 audio of IR’s speech after his weekend parties.. (Enna Thoppus on rampage..aaa.., how do u find time for parties on top of your research, and voluntary work, plus your “sevai” towards BGM collections,? just joking … I guess it’s the Maestro’s music which does the magic right …)
I have uploaded the speech in coolgoose at a lowbit rate mp3 file (quality is still good)

“Serious this time”, I appreciate your comments, there are lot of logistics, likes, dislikes of the artist etc…etc.. which are involved in addition to the time involved, the objective and purpose of the event. It is important to take everything into account when a gathering/program is arranged and there will be some pitfalls despite all these especially in our case with the time constraints. There is never a perfect gathering with out some compromises.
And finally, for all those skeptical about the project/the fund raising aspect, these are my opinions,
1. I entirely agree with people asking questions about the way the funds being raised, but you people have to understand the difficult task undertaken by this group ( SSSSSA) of dedicated volunteers. For God’s sake, these are not a bunch of politicians or people with vested interests who are after some sort of gimmicks or to swindle money, these people have their own jobs, family and priorities like rest of us but on top of all these they have the belief, faith and dedication towards what they are doing for this project. And stop using harsh words such as “begging” etc.. it’s really a shame for anybody who consider they are true tamilians/true music fans make such remarks.
2. This project is endorsed by Kanchi seer, concepualised by Tamil Inayam ( Fr. Gasper ) being promoted by people like Sankar and crew who have better and decent jobs like many here, so there is no gimmick or drama
3. There are different ways of fund raising and believe me this is one kind and absolutely there is nothing wrong in it as the transparency of the whole thing is made clear every now and then by the crew and Maestro himself, if you have more suggestions, more time to volunteer please come forward and join.
4. Lastly, as a true IR fan, how many of you have felt that one cannot pay back to Maestro in any manner as a returns to whatever he has showered as music on all of us so even a smallest contribution towards this project will be the greatest thing one can imagine for being a part of this project
It was a great feeling in me when my own non tamil physician colleagues (all from Bangalore) participated in the event with great enthusiasm and contributed generously, so I am sure u can influence your friends and relatives also to contribute to the project.
Sorry for the long post
