Guys,
I understood about this page in one of the yahoogroups sometime back. I've been silently following this group quiet since then. Its been informative all the times. Few of the compositions that I heard recently encouraged me to open up my perceptions here. First of all, A big appreciation to all the musical enthusiasts in the group for keeping it LIVE and GREAT!
I was one of the many to visit www.srikanthd.com to buy & listen to the singles that were released recently. I was extremely pleased listening to both the numbers. Its extremely rich in sound and quality. Here are my few thoughts that I wanted to share with you all in the forum:
Gam Ganapathy: One of the best numbers in the recent past on 'devotional' genre. Pace and mood of the song is maintained througout the song. Song gets introduced with 'gam ganapathy' chant, Preluded by a building strings that drifts into verse1 (Vigna vinayakaa). Verse1, a melodic phrase is stated twice, giving a 'feel'of start of the song. Chant is repeated to maintain the mood of the song. If I may be right, The chant and Verse1 goes with the notes of 'Revati'. One interesting observation is, Chanting is little different ( May be harmonically?). By the time, This is appreciated, Song takes a royal ride into 'omkaara naadhane' and moves into 'ennaalum' and 'vallabane' to end the complete introductory verse. All these three pieces have been sequenced well, melodically switching the 'provoking' mood of the listener into 'happiness'. Its been lined-up well for the listener to takeup nice melodies one-by-one. I would like to make a point here that, I've never heard any indian songs that had too many rich melodies within the verse1 itself. Its a great insight from the composer. Perhaps, Vallabane is the peneterating point, and the song gets into listener's 'soul'. Chant repeats ( additional voices probably?/ different harmonically?) again mesmerizing the listener with 'whats next?'. Song now, moves into Verse2. Point to note, Composer's brillance is felt here with minimal interludes as Verse1 had lots of melodies. Verse2 takes off well with main melody supported by a great bass voice ( very crystal clear voice) and moves into a very cinematic melody 'puvi midhu'( May be due to Em and Am? Not sure). Fascinating point is, Every line is constructed with different melodies, giving high curiosity to the listener without any disturbance in the flow. Song then goes with the signature line of 'New york'. Composer has thought well, taking those lines very powerfully and balancing well with high-notes. It really pleasures with a momentary picture of 'NY city' to the listener. Hats off, composer. Verse2 takes a stop with 'vallabane', This time with a new set of "Da(e)shing" counter-points. By this piece, Song makes a deep impact to the soul. Song now moves forward with 'ennaloom' phrase. Not sure, Why it moves like that. But the flow looks clean. Song takes an unexpected turn again, with 'gajananam'. This builds high devotion into an immersed soul and gives goose-bumps at the end of it ( hei ma!). Composer must be well versed classically to have carved such lovely pieces, and full marks to the singer, who lifts the song so so well. Perhaps, I've never heard a singer with such a range maintaing clean voice. Verse3 starts, One interesting observation was, It was not exactly same as verse2 - atleast first few lines were differnet harmonically. Rest of the melody is same, and the words are motivating. Verse3 ends with 'vallabane' - yet another master piece with 'da(e)shing' counterpoints. Especially the last one gives goose-bumps again and connects well back to 'vignavinyaka'. This last phrases have been emoted so well that, A true listener breaksdown with 'tears'. Song ends with ganapathy chant again.
80s in chennai: What a contrast, from 'devotion' to 'fun'? Song starts off with a cool yoodooling and introduces the signature, 80s in chennai, twice and moves into,'alagana' phrase. Melody is simple and moves very well in verse1. Endof verse1 immerses 83 world cup to us and moves into first interlude - Very simple to retain the focus. Verse2 is extremely cool and its been built with a sweet melody and memorable lines. Lyricist must have been a typical madrasi, he has included all the key experiences that madrasis went through. Melody score is too good and takes an exceptional turn on 'ninaivu' line. Thats where, it makes a true listener feel that, he missed precious times and i'm sure none of us can go back to those melodies..Songs gets back into signatures and gives a royal dedication to ilayaraja. Point to note, those 'wooos'(harmonies) in the verse2 give a special feel to the score and lingers the memories well. A great thought, composer. Second interlude arrnangements are also neat & simple to take the listener forward with Verse3, which beautifully talks about water problems, buss pass etc, and punches the memory with 'ninaivu'. This tune is so so haunting that, it inspires listener to go back and replay the song. Great piece!. Signatures are presented with different styles of melody in the end before the song ends with great memories. Definitely, the success of this song in my opinion is, this let me think about the complete 80s that i knew off. Composer has a midas-touch throughout the song. Singer has enhanced the score with his royal rendition and expressions. I'm sure he is a sure guy to watch out for in the near future..
Quick points were, A great team work. All the players were exceptional in their departments. After a long time, A devotional number made me crazy, as crazy as listening to a typical Rahman song - real word should be, 'addiction'. Arrangements have been done so well in the song that, it never takes a detour anywhere - Very intelligent approach. Special point, Singer is just outstanding and beyond words. Wish this team continues to make great works. Thanks for reading this long mail.

Hey Kicha,
As usual, sounds very good. I think that in the charanam mix, Neeyo/Naano was really distracting because of the volume. It was competing with the main melody.
Comparing with your other score that I have listened, this one sounded little wak in the orchestration.

Kicha - As usual nicely sung. I agree with sridhar on volume levels. Backing vocals seem to 'front'ing vocals :-)

Divakar,
Your melody is awesome. I quickly heard it at office. It sounds very interesting! Let me listen to it at home and write my detailed review/opinion about it.
Sridhar,
Can you please clarify whether some of my assumptions were right or not? Also, Can you please explain in detail, what was the source of inspiration for this song? and how did you achive so much of sophistication to the whole score - But it would be interesting to comprehend the story behind a great song that has grown so much in me. All that I can say is, Song has got phenomenal hard-work with it, be it, melody or arrangements or singing? Are you a trained musician classically? Was Gum Ganapathy tuned to lyrics or was it tuned first?

Thygarajan,
I would like to take this discussion offline. I don't want my posting to be a distraction here. Since other people in this thread have not written their opinions, I donot want to bother them with the information.
When I get home, I will send you a mail.
All your observations are valid. I am even surprised that some of your points sound as if you were part of the team.
Though you have offered your credits most of the time to the composer, I am sure that the word "composer" collectively meant all the people who worked on it.
It is a complex structure, yet I am sure that it sounds easy on your ears.

a query to all those having a Home studio set up:
I have a TRINITY (KORG) Workstation KEYBOARD with me. My friend has a
PC with some music softwares installed --- CAKEWALK, SOUND FORGE, VEGAS
PRO etc.
In my keyboard, I saved a song in the Standard MIDI format and
stored in a floppy disk. I copied the song from this floppy to my
friend's PC, and opened the songs with these Music Softwares.
When I play the songs with these Softwares, the original instruments of the TRINITY keyboard are replaced by instruments present in the software. Also, the order of instruments gets changed, So for a flute piece(from the keyboard), I hear a sax piece(from the software).
My question is: How to get the same instruments from the Keyboard into the software, so that I can hear the same quality of music as coming from the keyboard. Please guide me Whether I have to use some other software apart from the mentioned, or do I have to use some plug-ins with the present softwares..or any other process?
Please explain at the earliest.
cheers
satsona
