Yes Vidiya Vidiya has some cheap and cheesy portions in it.
The female chorus and also male chorus howling "Whoaaaaa" ounds extremely cheesy and embarassing! I should also point out that you guys will be stunned by the picturisation of this song which is done by none other than the one and only Mani Ratnam who is a stickler of quality technicality in tamil cinema.
When the chorus goes "Whoaaaaa" (sounds so cheap) 20-30 guys wearing some cheap model ray ban sunglasses and a head band will turn around and jump screaming "Whoaaaaa". If anyone wants to call this a masterpiece (both the music and the picturisation) you are welcome to but I wont!
I really hate IR's female chorus! They sound so shrill and irritating. I think he has changes his harmony singers now and there are people from ARR's harmony too (ganga, Febi, Feji, Renuka etc)

how can you forget another Mani-IR blunder in "Agni Natchitram's Rajadhi rajanindar raja".. IR makes a funny sound in the middle of the song which used to remind me of a BUS HORN.. something like "PABUBUBU PAA PAA".. remember guys... anyway ARR's Kannalane(Bombay) had "Gumsumu gumsumu guppu chu" now watever that means ... maybe it is a problem with Mani... hehehehehe....

IR was the first person in TFM to use choral harmonies in songs. That song is a gem anytime IMO. Picturisation of IR's songs always leaves something to be desired. You are the first person I have known to complain about chorus in his songs.

IR's choral harmonies was and is the best. He was a trend setter in this area or any area of composition for that matter.
ARR has subtly copied his style and cleverly introduced the humming at the begining of the song Ennavalle Ennavalle. If you have time, listen to chinna chinna vanna kuyil -- mounaragam. There is a chorus in the Ist interlude and it resembles exactly with the prelude chorus of Ennavalle Ennavalle.

Dorai, Jag,
I love the way IR structures the notes for the different singers in his harmony.
One classic example is "Das Das" from Kadalore Kavithaigal! The male chorus is just amazing. Impeccable rendering!
I still complain about the "Voice" of his female harmony singers. It is extremely shrill and annoying. Might have suited the eastman color days of his music.
I am not complaining about the tune they sing or their co-ordination they have. It is only their voice and that too only the female chorus harmony! Extremely shrill. Annoying!
There is one song I will give info abt that later.
It is so cheeesy and you will know what I mean by an awwwwwwfullll voice.
The songs starts like some girl asking "Ready-ya?" the females reply in chorus "Aam Ready!" then the girl says "Start Sounduuu!" and then goes "takaka takaka takaka takaka...."
Really sounds awful, cheesy, irritating and IR could just have used another set of female singers with more matured voices to do those kinds of shit!

that song V is taking abt is frm the film kallukul eeram and the song is "thoppiloru nadagam nadakuthu".id unno wat V is finding irritating in that song its a classic folk no. and IR who is master in folk songs hav selected aptly a female chorus to remind us the rural females. in villages across india every female is a singer and they dont hav any formal musical training. musci is inborn in them that they sing anytime during work or making their children sleep or in a funeral party. idont find anything wrong in that.

"Mani-IR blunder in "Agni Natchitram's Rajadhi rajanindar raja"..
guys..comments like this one are what has made IR into a recluse..very few..very few appreciate the nuances in his music. People have been listening to his music just for the catchy rhythm or the soomthing melody..these are somethings anybody can do..no wonder there are so many music directors now.
this song we are talking about is just not another POP/rhythm song..it is done purely with percussion instruments..there are three or four percussion instruments playing at the same time to provide color/texture..harmony is created only using vocal..that is the reason for pa ba pa ba..These are standard/normal words for us mere indians/tamil villagers :( I am sure there are 'cool' alternatives to these in samples/CDs..let other MDs spend their time shopping around for these and listen to them countless hours to pick the cool/great sounds.. We have to leave IR to do real music..which is creating it .. not assembling from bits and pieces ..ofcourse he also uses some bits/pieces called swaras/bhols..

k
your post was good!
I personally did not make fun of villagers! I like the way in which IR refrains from samples and creates his own real 'music'.
However I am stressing thatr he has compromised on quality a lot of times and some of his gems were tarnished by brash singing. The female chorus especially is so shrill and high-piched. The voices he slects could have been more mature. Like he is doing now with Ganga, Renuka, Febi, etc...
So please do not see this as anti-folk, anti-rural or anything.
I like the song "Oru gundumani" from avatharam and I love the inncocent way in which he sasys "nalla irukka" in the miidle of the song. I dont mind all that. But I cant stand the inadequate shrill and creepy howling of female chorus in some of his songs and though not all.

V..yeah ..the production values in IR songs are not consistent. The chorus singers are not always recorded well. You can hear the small room they are crammed into. Note, two songs were composed and recorded on a single day during IR's busiest periods. Also, Chorus is different from harmony. When IR is using Febi he writes harmony lines for her. I am sure she got one of her toughest assignments with IR.
People should cover versions of IR's songs (not like Deva :)) or DJs should remix his dance songs (I dont like remixes, but am sure atleast this way lots of young people will get exposed/introduced to IR).
avathaaram is a fantastic album. I dont know how many people cherish it that much.

V,
The problem might arise with the type of settings you have on your music system. Due to the kind of recording IR does , it does not help to have any kind of treble or bass setting or any advanced feature switched on in your system (the shrillness is due to some kind of treble effect, the low frequency, high pitch of chorus usually becomes jarring. Why just chorus, just increase the treble and you'll find even the singer sounding shrill). Just plain tape recorder which can play stereo is suited to listen to his songs ( better a walkman gives the full effect). Anyway it is just a suggestion.
k.. Avatharaam is a magnum op of Raaja sir. That is one album which shows what this genius is capable of. I can only say, poor Thangar!

K, IR tried lot of experimentation on chorus. Infact he is the pioneer in this regard. Best chorus is Kozhi koovuthu, edho mogam. we need not react to statement of likes of V, who post for the sake of posting because whatever explanation you give, will go vain.

Speaker,
Unless V(147) responses are decent, I dont think V(147) can be neglected.
V(147), I agree to some of your points. IR has given good chorus stuff, also some bad stuff (due to recording quality and choice of people). Some of his great songs were hampered a little by this.
I read an article about how raaja composes. Like he does three different recording per day. If a musician in his group is finding it hard to play a portion, he changes the composition a little simpler. IRs answer to this is .. "after all work must be done." The same thing with chorus, I think. You never know what other external factors like the recording quality, pressure by producers (budget and time constraints to wait till things are done properly).
I think sound quality is one of the main things in music. Because, although its nothing to do with how good the composition is ... its just does not make justice to the composition without good recording quality and does not do justice to the fan who listens to it. Having a great idea is good, unless the idea is not conveyed in a proper manner, it will not make justice to the idea.

I agree with you on those lines. I have also read the beautiful article 'How Ilaiyaraaja Composes' by Shri Ananthanarayanan.
I don't deny that Ilaiyaraja has written beautiful choral passages and he was the first one in tfm to bring some flavorful chorus.
My point is that the female chorus voice sometimes sounded to shrill and raw. As a musician with a great "ear for music" I cannot believe IR could let those slip into some of his heavenly compositions.
Take for example, "Madai Thirandhu" The lead singer is completely flawless and it is one of the best songs with the right appeal to both the generations on either side at the time the song released. Me and my mom both liked this song and that is the magic of Raja!
But take a second to examine the female chorus in this song in the 2nd interlude. The female singers although they sing the notes properly have a very immature shrill voice with no boundaries. Raja could have roped in singers who had more "dhum" in their voice and discipline.
Raja has let some bad quality singing slip away in his music.
But if it is the assts in Prasad that pass off these things and if Raja did not have time I still think Raja could have corrected these. After all this is his music.
