IR-ARR usage of instruments

get ready for another round, guys (timepass panna venaam:-))]. no IR or ARR bashing, please, muthallaye sollitten. let's just discuss how each of them has used various instruments. for instance, IR's use of acoustic guitar is unparalleled, while ARR rarely uses it. similarly, IR `pales' before ARR when it comes to electric guitar or keyboards (strictly IMHO, everyone's welcome to disagree). start shooting.

IR's use of Sarangi is in Solai puzhpangalae.
AR uses it in Oorvasi Oorvasi also, where it
wails like human voice!
Also
Different algorithms can produce different
natural sounds very accurately. Though FM
makes fairly good imitations of individual
sounds, it is tough to program the envelopes
of the wave shapes in FM. Analog synthesis
(subtractive - take a complex shape and filter
out the harmonics) can do quite a lot, if you
carefully program it. Rahman has outstanding
synth sounds in many many songs. One that
immediately comes to my mind is the plop
sound in 'Thuli Thuli' (ESK) intro. Also in
Malargalae Malargalae!
There is a company called Seer Systems which
has put together a software called Reality
which has all these algorithms and recreates
real instruments fairly good. Again, sound is
one thing, performance controls is another!
(Of course musical ideas is yet another!)
There is a great revival of analog synths,
(which were overshadowed by DX-7 for 10 years).
There is one amazing software emulator of
Roland's most famous TR808, TB303 kits. You have
to play it to believe the quality. But that
creates only techno-sounds.

Very good Info Ravi. I'm eagerly waiting for a synth which produces 100% Piano tone, at a very low price. days are nearing.

Viswanathan Ramamoorthy use Sarangi very well too,
See Yaarantha nilavu (and hear Sridhar's MIDI
sequence!)

Kurzweil sells for around 2500 dollars, which
is low price, for its capability. Many hollywood
producers use it as their basic sound source.
Also Korg Trinity, Triton series. Srikanth
tells me Rahman used Korg 01/W for Roja and
Srikanth also has one of them.
For lower end, Yamaha sounds are often more
bright than Roland sounds, and they seem to be
the low price high quality winners. They use
a technology they call as Advanced Wave Modulation, which I suspect is a way to alter
sound spectrum across the keyboard. I have heard
amazing sounds from very cheap yamaha keyboards.

Last week I came across the website
www.ntonyx.com. A Russian has done
amazing software that can introduce
controller effects into MIDI sequences
and make them sound live play!
Listen to the demos.
Of course the software is very complicated
and you must put a long learning curve to
do what he has done, but you can give it
a try if you want to say bye to your
current acoustic band. ;)

Thank you Naveen, rajaG, for enjoying the writing.
I plan to write until the next fight on this

In the Dubai program I thought I saw Rehman use a Korg Trinity. My friends tell me that Triton is slightly better than Trinity - but I have not bothered to find out why, yet.

OK back to my serious self again. Can you write about the relative pros and cons of using a sound module vs. an enhanced keyboard?
- From: rjay (@ brkfw0005.navistar.com)

Almost all good keyboards (K2600, Korg) are
available as performance keyboard and also
as rack mount modules.
The purpose is differnt in each. Performance
keyboards are for stage performance and can
do all their corresponding module can do.
However, people use Sound modules for mixing
into albums. Just choice and reduced
studio space!
When you look at a module, you think of it
as a sound source and tend to drive it from
a PC, typically. So you can do quite a lot of
controller information to get nuances.
Keyboards generally have a built in sequencer
which you can use to record a multi-part song
and play it back.
I personally think, good keyboard players
should not be limited to keyboard (which has
very limited controllers (kb, touch, pitch,
modulation(though you can program any synth
control to one of the wheels, you generally cannot
manipulate more than one simultaneously).
They should learn to use PC sequencers.
However, it really pays a lot to learn to play
keyboards well. Better still, play acoustic
instruments like, guitar, flute, violin.
Nadaswaram IMO would be the last imitated
instruments. Acoustic sounds carry very
very rich harmonics and dynamics and they
excite you so much musically. (Nadham)
Flute can melt our souls. (Just a passing by
flute in Enna Seyya pogirai pulls us like this!
Nadaswaram examples would be Raja's
works in Poongathave interlude and many others.)

My 2 cents...
What is a sound module?
Imagine the sound generator s alone being ripped of from the keyboard, this becomes a sound module.
This does everything the keyboard does but does not have input of its own,it depends on Midi-in , we can connect triggers and control this module via midi.
What are triggers?
Triggers are dummy keyboards without tones, they just transmit midi events. they dont have any sound engine in them. but have all the input functions a keyboard will have, these also have special buttons/slider to control volume, pan etc.
All the popular keyboards are converted to a sound module. Musicians prefer to use sound modules because it occupies only 2/4 rack spaces,
they just need one trigger keyboard (this is can be also a keyboard with tones
Best bet will be to buy 1 good keyboard like dx7 or korg trinity and keep investing on modules, modules are 3 or 4 times cheaper than the keyboards. All this can be chained using midi in/thru cables. There are also midi hubs available, which routes data.

OOPS. I was blown by your revelation.
I was convinced that the mouna raagam piece was from a real piano because of the sound.
I am a novice as far as playing keyboards is concerned but am trying to bridge it by putting my daughter into professional training. She started her Junior Music course at Yamaha Music school at the age of 4 and has finished it now.(FYI-she came out as best performer in all the levels) She is now into Electone course which runs 13 levels. I hope she achieves what I could not. Meanwhile I am doing my best to catch up with her:-))))
I have to now go for a more sophisticated organ as she just used a Casio for her basics.
Any tips on this. I dont have a lot of money to throw in though.
Rjay, RajaG, Srikanth etc..
I understand how it feels when somebody spoils a good discussion. In a free for all place like this sometimes devil does rule. Let us forget thier existence and just go ahead with what is going on.
Kudos to you all for taking me in this wonderful journey. I love it.
Now over to you.

Kamesh,
If you want to bring your daughter a good professional pianist, I suggest you to buy an acoustic piano for her. Grand Piano will occupy too much space and it is expensive too. Get an Upright (Vertical) Piano. If there is any Piano Sale near ur place, just go and browse. sometimes you may get a very good deal. While practising there should'nt be any diversion like Auto rhythm, auto Accompaniment etc. Because of these, sometimes you won't give much importance to fingering. this will deteriorate the fingering. Fingering is very very important in Piano when you play fast runs. Nowadays the piano playing style is very much simplified. Once you learn advanced piano playing styles, you won't like the latest style of playing piano. I have an acoustic piano. definitely I enjoy playing in piano than an electronic keyboard. For example, do a trill (playing alternate notes rapidly.) in an acoustic piano and an electronic piano, you'll definitely like the acoustic one. another example is arppeggio (break the chords and play).
if your daughter likes to participate in a piano competition, it is better to practise in Acoustic Piano.
All the best.

pentium or viggy007.....
clarification:
i happend to know this piece of info thru Mr.Noel (Arr asst), I was spending some time with him,
(when arr was busy recording konjum nilavu - i was not let inside the recording studio for some reason or other), there was huge banner of Phil collins with korg 01/w in the rececption, I asked noel about the keyboard and he told arr has used it completely in roja and in Thiruda Thiruda (he also told korg m1 was used). thats is the brief history,
btw; who are you ?, can you tell your actual name.
i dont think anyone will belive you here if you dont tell your name.
Kamesh: Naveen is graded piano player...you got the best advice. all the best for your daughter.
