OISG,

As Sathya had pointed out the flaw was only on the selection of artists.the movie was ok but considering the classics like Sumaithangi this was a let down.I wonder with songs like this why this movie never got the national award.
Even Karnan got a thums down from our so called "Reviewers" when it was released. Please see the thread "Songs from Karnan". <<<<<
Have a heart! Only this much portion applied to me! All the rest is meant for others, while the entire posting is addressed to me!!!!!!

Saravanan, going by the way PoonkathavE and madai thirandhu were picturized, I am sort of glad that this song didn't get in :) Otherwise, that heroine and nizhalgaL ravi's stone-faced expressions would haunt us for ever :)

bb- couln't agree more with you! Madai thirandhu was a visual atrocity with Chandrashekhar in garish coats. Pon maalai pozhuthu had Rajasekhar giving blank looks upwards (ironically, he was himself a director!). The picturisation of the lovely 'Poonkathavey' was preposterous to say the least!
Btw, the same heroine, who called herself 'Rohini' in Nizhalgal (in the line of BR's 'R' heroines), reappeared years later to act in 'Oruvar Vaazhum Aalayam'(1988)- another film with a superb musical score. She called herself 'Radhu' in this film!

From the movie's storyline, where would this song fit in?

i remember seeing this song 'Dhoorathil..' on the first day matinee show of Nizhalgall. i liked the movie very much and when i went for a second time a week later this song was chopped off. the picturisation was not bad. this song was on the second heroine 'savitha (or sabitha)' who plays the role of charuhaasan's daughter. the song comes when she is feeling lonely after her father's death and when she knows that her father desired to teach Rajashekar (prabhu, in the movie) but passed away just before his first class. maybe she thinks that she will not be able to see him ever again and the song starts as a dream song. it was choregraphed (very slow movements) with her wearing a saffron saree, a sort of meera style. i think in the movie the song ended with the line 'Dhinam azhaithen prabhu unaiye..' but in the song it continues after a pause and then very slowly. one of the best for SJ.

Doorathil Naan Kanda is a plaintive, searing song. It always reminds me of SJs other song "Kaatril..." from Johnny. Great selection again. Sabitha also appeared in another film which did not do to well, titled "Archanaippookkal" Anyone else recall this debacle?
You are also right in saying that the picturisation of these melodies was a huge mess in the hands of our BRs amd MRs. Another haunting song "Rasave Unna Naan Yenni Thaan" from Thanikkaattu Raja by SPS. How that song was ruined by unimaginative camerawork! A travesty, to say the least.

one of the forerunner to HTNI and NBTW, i feel is the 'Violin Concerto' in RaajaPaarvai. This is an absolute brilliant muscical piece ever concieved and delivered in tamil music. Its a beautiful blend of Indian and Western music. The moment i start to play this music i feel all my senses are oriented towards the music and in the end left with a mood of unbelievable astonishment. The way the solo violin starts and then blends with various other instruments is amazing. It has a dual with almost each main instrument, whether its a western note or indian note. Its a treasure for a music fan.
Just before the release of RaajaPaarvai the renowned writer 'Sujatha' Rangarajan wrote a small article about this muscical piece in Kumudam (or Vikatan?). He described beautifully this masterpiece and ended saying that this is a milestone in tamil film music. that created more eagerness in this music and movie.
When this music ends, it gives a feeling - My God,
couldn't it go for a few more minutes.

This violin concerto is in Pantuvarali. It starts with Carnatic and then goes on to Western Classical and then ends with Jazz. Very novel in both the concept (fusion music) and orchestration.

This song is a must in the collection of any SPB-IR-mohanam connoiseurs. This song is one of those 'konjal' songs of SPB. One cannot resist but keep on admiring this remarkeable genius who sings all the micro brighas with absolute clarity and expressiveness given he is untrained. The tune, one has to believe, is from IR and not MSV which though is obvious ONLY from the background orch'n. While one admires SPB in this song, (God and Karthik forbid) PS slips in the words 'devan varum' in the second charaNam which in my opinion must be overlooked as a rarity and human aspect of her voice which is ,IMO, divine. The song blatantly reminds us of 2 songs both by IR - (1) pani mazai vizum (2) naan oru ponnOviyam kaNden edhire. The former springs into mind with an easy way to blend its charaNam with thirutheril though the pallavi itself has dha1 creeping for beautification. thiruthEril is one song which is dear to SPB lovers. The signature of the song is the line 'nilaiyao..azagin kalaiyo' which ran in my brain in BG for a couple of weeks after which I 'discovered' it. It is a pain indesribable when a tune sits in your brain and itches without appearing in full form before you. I found it today and already have listned to it 50 times. Have fun..

bb- good song. Among the best that SPB got to sing for Sivaji. IR's enchanting music- the opening bars are awesome. The other songs from the film were good too- 'Ellorum Paadungal'- SPB, 'Endhan Ponvanname'- TMS and PS versions and 'Aagayam keezhe'-KJY.
'Naan Vaazhavaippen'-1979- was a remake of a Amitabh film-I forget the name of it. NVV was directed by D Yoganand and starred Sivaji and KRV with Rajini in a scene stealing cameo.
However, KRV with and a boy-cut and bell bottoms, was not a very pleasing sight :-((

Saravanan,
The Hindi original was 'Majboor', which itself was, I am told from 'Cold Sweat'! In Hindi, Pran danced for the song ' Michael ka.... lallallallallaah!'. In Tamil, it was Rajini in ' Aagaayam mElE, paadhaaLam keezhE, aanandha ulagam naduvinilE! adi naanthaan Michael, neethaan my girl!' The Hindi and English versions were famous for a car chase sequence! I haven't seen the Tamil version, though!

who wrote lyrics for this song?

bb- you're right- it is 'Ennodu paadungal' followed by perhaps, 'nal vaazhthu koorungal, mangai endhan nenjukkul, gangai endhan kannukkul aanandha kanneer alaimodhudhamma- wish you many more happy returns of the day'- Sivaji singing to KRV on her birthday- the vision of KRV in a black maxi (!) haunts me to this day!!
Sorry, no idea about the lyricist. Perhaps Kannadasan.

bb-
Good selection again.
If only I can get that image of KRV in a safari-suit (orange-pink?) with close cropped hair walking (Thiruth Ther indeed!) toward Sivaji...
Thanks for the memories bb!
