Malayalam film industry has a good track record of using published novels/Stories.( I don tknow about the songs there)
Tamil film industry has not used pre-written stories/novels much.Thought of discussing the songs in such movies,how well were they fitted in and how the music/songs elevated/brought down the story value.

In my view Sila nerangalil should rank first as a goos story,good songs in a well made movie,followed by Iruvar Ullam (a run-of-the mill story) brilliantly scripted and directed by LV Prasad.

  'Adhai vida ragasiyam' was a serial by Kavignar KaNNadaasan in Kumudam.
  
  In the film 'Gayatri', Jaishankar played Ganesh but his assistant was named Chellappa (and not Vasanth!). In the original story, the heroine is saved from the hell of her marriage, but in the film Sridevi kills herself!

  Vikram-Storyline got published in Kumudam with stills when the film was made. You can't say that is made from a novel/story.

  Yes,Miss Malini the story was by RKN.Thanx for the correction.
  
  But i wish to discuss the songs.
  
  For eg Guide had great songs by SDB."Gatha Rahe" is an all time hit.But did it fit in RKNs stroy.I guess NOT.But Shailendra s good lyrics "Jeene ka Tamanna hai" "Marneka Iradha he" -how well it suited Waheedas character?Can someone elaborate.
  
  Talking of SNSM "Veru idam thedi povalo" and "Kandathai Sollugiren" the lyrics matched the story/charactors and hence added great value to the storyline.(Talking of BGM (ada kadvule!Kaasikku ponalum tholaytha Karmam!) in the scene when Lakshmi enters the house after the dreadful experience in the car,how well thought about it was).
  
  Kannedhire thondrinal (Iruvar Ullam) and Raman Andalum did enhance the characterisation i feel."Senthazham poovil" OTOH was the directors version of "Aaju se pehele" by Vijayendra-Zareena-Ravindra jain combo.

  Thanks for the correction about the Maharishi/Kannadasan confusion. The highlight of Sivappukkal was Kamalhaasan as a kovil "poojari"! That film also had Sri Devi and Roja Ramani (and incidentally, it came close on the heels of Iru Nilavugal.)
  Regarding "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai." Songs do at an "unnatural" aspect to any novel that is adapted on the screen. But you are right in saying that the lyrics in that particular song do highlight the precarious walk between optimism and annihilation for that particular character (rosie/nalini). She is both child-woman and woman-destroyed (by a flawed marriage) and when she meets Raju Guide, she is tempted to choose life over living death. Hence, the appropriateness of the song - joyous and still apprehensive.
  Guide, for all its cinetmatic trappings, was still one of the better text-to-screen adaptations. The continuous link between Moh Se Chhal Kiye Jaye (the dance song) and Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya (the realisation song) was done with great finesse. Of course, Lata, Rafi, SDB, Dev Anand, Waheeda, Majrooh and Vijay Anand were all at the peak of their creative powers when that film was made. One good reason why the film version is still considered a classic to this day. (cf. current Devdas. Let's leave it there :-))

  Having not read the story i look forward to some real analysis by experts.

  On the lighter vein, I would prefer to make Lakshmi s "Mithila Vilas" any day and that would be a great business decision!I wonder why Suraj Barjatiya has not come up with that!

  In my teens i had an obsession to adapt R.Chudamani s "Inai Paravai" to a movie.I had SV Sahasranamam and MS Subbalkshmi in mind to play the lead!!I was sure that i could convince them with my script!.Another one was "Nondi Pillayar" for which i had Nasiruddin Shah in mind.
  
  Coming back to Devadas any additions?
  
  I think Sridhar s "Kodi Malar" ( the great "Mauname Paarvayai oru paatu by PBS-MSV) was based on a Bengali Novel "Shyamala".I vaguely remeber the credits.

  We (myself & my sister) have many times dreamt of filming Kalki's the famous 'Ponniyin Selvan' - i bet it will be so with many here and in the tf industries. We have made the character selections several times, our favourites being vijayanthi mala (nandini devi), devika (poonkuzhali) padmini (kundhavai praattiyaar), vijayakumari (oomai thai) vandhiyathEvan (saambaar), Arunmozhi varman (MGR), aazhvaarkkadiyaan (baalayya) and so on...But this didn't work out as they were already old and out of field when we made this selection:)))))
  Our recent picks: Aishwarya Rai (nandhini), vikram (vandhiyathEvan), meena (poonkuzhali), kamal (rajaraja chozhan). Hope somebody could find the suitable artists and make this dream to come true (before these artists vanish from our memory!!)

  Our Problem is we try to imagine our favourite stories with the existing actors.Finally you will end up with Prashanth doing Rangamani and unknown Shweta Trivedi(model-DJ-VJ-blah-blah)doing Triveni in Ra.Su.Nallaperumal s Kallukul Eeram.
  
  Imagine a Sujatha fans horror of seeing Rajini,Jai Castor Oil Suresh as Ganesh.Ganesh singing duet with Priya..Enakku nalla Venum!!
  
  Recently seeing the singer Karthik in SUN TV i was reminded of Babu of Thi.Ja s Mogamul.A vulnerable,innocent face with good music talents.My Jamuna would be Srinidhi Karthik(chidambaram).My MD would be MS Gopalakrishnan doing the carnatic numbers and for BGM hmm..hmm.it would be Rehman.I need to get the CM right and i need the period effect in the background.
  
  Has someone attempted La.Sa.Ra s Paarkadal and Ketti Melam.Its good that not one of the current film makers have set an eye on that.For them Laskhmi,Anuradha Ramanan,Sivasankari,Anuthama would do.
  
  Naaz atleast you can reproduce the story background part of Devadas.
  
  Still our MDs ,i feel,heard these stories from the narrations of the Director... or a personal viewpoint of the director.I really doubt IR would have read Mogamul.(May be ..a one in 1000 chance).Atleast JK was involved in SNSM making,he himself writing the songs.(Prob after Padhai theriyuthu paar in 60s)

  OISG- 'Yaarukkaga Azhuthaan'- had only one song 'Uruvathiley ivan manithan' by KJY. It was a long song. Music by a person called Ramanan . (Wonder who he was/is?) The lyrics were good- Kannadasan.
