Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Saravanan,
Shyam goes as far back as '72? Also, I thought Devadhai came before "Manidharil..." But you should know.

If you are thinking about of a rare gem of IR then I have suggestion
"Thalaiyai kuniyum thamaraiye" from Oru odai nadhiyaagiradhu

Saravanan:
Thanks for pointing out that 'kaNmaNiyE un' is by Udhaya Bhanu. I have always been thinking that it is by Ghantasala. Their voices have some similarity.
You have made interesting points about the lyrics of the SOTD. The moods of "He" and "She" shown in the lyrics agree with the movie situation.
bb:
SG has sung for Gemini in other movies too. 'irukkum idaththai vaittu illaadha idam thEdi' (Thiruvarutchelvar) is one I can immediately think of.

I have been searching for this MB Srinivasan type songs that was in a Prathap movie, if I remember right. It used to be available on Rex Aruls site ( which is unfortunately down, what a collection of rare IR gems). The song is "Eriyile elandha maram thangachchi vachcha maram". That would also be a good choice for SOTD.
Just my $.02

Finally, my RealOne Player lasted long enough for me to hear today's SOTD. PS sounds so fresh I wonder how ALR managed to sing with her without feeling conscious about his limitations. Wasn't ALR the guy who sang "Engirundhaalum Vaazhga" as "Vaalga"? I can see how ALR was relegated to comedy songs for the most part. He sounds kind of unrefined the way Malaysia Vasudevan sounded even in his best ballads.

"Eriyilae" is from "Karayellaam Shenbagappoo", actually the title song from Karayellaam Shenbagappoo is a more appropriate use of IR's voice than the recent "Thendral Vandhu".

Whoa! I was away a few days and a lot has happened in this thread. I don't want to rake the past but my thanks to Vaathiyaar & Fan for your support. End digression.
One more suggestion for SOTD - songs from devotional movies.
There have been many interesting songs from such movies, which are not necessarily devotional in nature and many of them are feasts as far as lyrical and musical content are concerned.
Even if you take an obscure movie like Ganga Gowri, you can still find some forgotten gems like SJ's Azhagiya megangal vaanathil thirala arul purivaai gangaa and PBS/SJ's Antharangam naan ariven sinthum ilam punnagaiye.
Movies like Thunaivan which you may think is completely devotional has a great love duet in Naan yaar enbathai nee solla.
Thirumalai Thenkumari has many-songs-in-one in
Azhage Thamizhey nee vaazhga - Tamil
Kannugal pootti nyaan oru nimisham - Malyalam
Krishna thaasinaa karaiyvebaa - Kannadam
Paadannunu manasukkulle aasai niraya keethu - Madras baashai!
Naa bangaarayya naa singgaarayya - Telugu
and the climax by ALR and gang
Oorellaam paaru ullasa touru
An appropriate song for this season of Ugaadhi, Vishu & Thamizh Puthaandu. :)

Song of the Day: thaathi thoodhO theedhu from Thenali Raman.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thaathi.rm
- This hilarious piece shows Thenaliraman in a challenge against a poet, composing an instant poem with just "thaa" and its derivatives. I picked this for the straight talk that Sivaji gives, his thamizh diction and that of TMS too. I've written down the poem below:

- MD: Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Not sure who wrote this piece, probably Kannadasan. Thenaliraman didn't have many good songs and was a forgetful movie.
- Manisegaran writes on Thenali Raman:
It was at this time that Sivaji Ganesan, who was a DMK supporter went to Thiruppathi. Kannadasan, along with other DMK members took exception to this. Kannadasan started Thendral magazine in which he attacked and heaped humiliation upon Sivaji Ganesan. Kannadasan had also written dialogue for one more Sivaji Ganesan Movie-Thenali Raman. In Thendral Kannadasan had mentioned that Thenali Raman was sure to dig its own grave. When both Kannadasan and Sivaji Ganesan met at the Vahini Studio, there was almost a fist fight, if not for the timely dispersal caused by the onlookers. This was exaggerated in the papers. That was the end of Sivaji Ganesan- Kannadasan team work-at least for a few years.

bb:
Have you listened to viNNulagil minni varum thAragaiyE pO pO by Bhanumathy in Thenali Raman? It is a nice, soft melodious song. I am not that familiar with the other songs of that movie, although I have heard them some time ago. I think PB also sings 'piRandha nAL, mannan piRandha nAL', 'ulagellAm unadharuLAl malarum' is a sad solo by P Leela, and 'ullAsam thEdum ellOrum Or nAL sollAmal pOvAr allAvidam' is a decent song by Ghantasala(?). (I wonder how may songs Ghantasala has sung for Sivaji!)
By the way, why do you say it is a forgetful movie? I thought, with Sivaji and NTR giving creditable performances the movie was a well made one.

sk, I've seen the movie and didn't find much to enjoy in it. yes, ullaasam thEdum is by Ghantasala. This song comes when Thenali Raman is masquerading as an old hand next to the mughal king. If I remember right, that song was better than the others. I don't particularly remember the Bhanumathi song.

bb/sk- some other good songs in Tenali Raman: 'Chittu poley'- AP Komala, a sankrit song from Geethagovindam by PS and my favourite Ravu Balasaraswathi's ' Thangam pongum meni undhan sondham ini'. The last mentioned is a spellbinding, fast-paced classic gem, made memorable by the lilting voice of Balasaraswathi.

Regarding your statement..
"Wasn't ALR the guy who sang 'Engirundhaalum Vaazhga' as 'Vaalga'?"
I don't think ALR sings 'vaazhga' as 'vaalga'. He pronounces quite correctly. In fact the song is really enhanced because of the choice of ALR for it.

bb,
I could not resist writing this. Can you create a parse-able index of SOTD? i.e to find quickly if some artist or a song worth featuring is missing so that I can recommend it (I can hear you muttering who needs your recommendations :) ).

A similar song is there in 'Arunagirinathar'. It's a intellectual contest between TMS (arunagirinathar) and manohar (one heavy-headed poet). The contest is, each, rest a sword with sharp-twisted-tip around the other's ear. And if one poet is unable to come up with the meaning for the other's poem, the sword will be pulled so as to make the poet sans an ear. Arunagirinathar sings a lengthier song with only the derivatives of 'tha'. And predictably manohar fails - but arunagirinathar forgives. more predictably.
One more song that comes to mind is the contest between SSR and devika wherein devika sings a song with only 'tha' derivatives. This time it is SSR's turn to lose. TR ramachandran plays umpire. Is it vanambadi?
