Lyrics - The Golden 70s

The 70s is a special period for me and holds a special place in my heart. Unfortunately it is a period overlooked by many people and we hardly hear songs from this period nowadays.

Whenever, I have the time, I would like to share the lyrics of some of my favourites and have discussions of this period.

  OISG has already posted the other pathos song from Vasantha Maaligai. There is a great intro to that song (Irandu manam vendum).

  A great SPB-SJ duet from IR's first year in TFM. "Oru Naal unnodu oru naal" from Uravaadum Nenjam. I am not sure about the lyricist, the actors or the situation. (Explanations welcome). I particularly liked the last saranam where the longings of a couple for a happy married life are expressed beautifully.

  Here is a duet from "Nalla Penmani" sung by KJY-Swarna. The interesting thing about the lyric here is that all sentences end with "inam" (atleast most of them :) I am not sure about the lyricist for this song but it sure reminds me of the liberal sprinkling of Nilas in the song "Vaan nila nila alla".

  thanx for the info and as u can guess i have a long way to go. it annoys the london tamil video stores thta im a B&W tamil film fan. and a big and strange jayasanker fan. they insist i need to watch more recent films but....

  I have always wondered about this 70s song "Suraangani". Somewhere in the late 80s, I attended the annual day function of the factory in which my father was working. I was in my pre-teens then. One of my father's colleagues sang the "Suraangani" song (with the lyrics changed such that it referred to the machines with which they were working along with some other technical jargon). The effect that it had on his other colleagues was astounding. The usually sombre-looking middle aged gents started smiling broadly and began to clap to the song. They were all enjoying themselves thoroughly and there was wild cheering when the song ended. I was curious to know what made these people so passionate about this song. When I asked the person who sang the song, he told me that it was a modification of the suraangani song which was a big hit during his college days. He did not elaborate more due to the obvious generation gap. As the years rolled by, I found that there were multiple versions of the song, one by Ceylon Manohar, a TFM version in the film "Avar Enakke Sontham" and some unofficial "Asaiva" modifications (probably specific to colleges). I have asked some other old-timers recently about this song and though the song brings an impish smile to their lips, they do not discuss it further. Again maybe due to the generation gap.
  
  My query is - what made this song a hit, particularly with the youth of the 70s ? (I have heard the lyrics of the TFM version and they were.. well, not so innocent :)

  Oru Naal is a great one...the lyrics are so rich in meaning and what i like most is that it exhorts the ponnu and mapplai to live harmony despite their differing personality types.

  Thanks for the Nalla Penmani song. I think it starred Muthuraman and Sujatha. There are some more good songs in that movie. Can't recall now.
  
  As for Surangani, I think it is a feel good song from Ceylon Tamils, very much like China maamiye un chinna magal enge. :)

  I understand your enthusiasm for lyrics. But it would help if you could check the usual Lyrics sites for the songs you want, before asking here. Many of the songs you have requested are already at the TFSA site at http://www.newtfmpage.com/tfsa/english/tfsa_eng.htm
  
  Incidentally guys, I would like to give my unconditional approval for TFSA, TFMDF or any other site owners to use whatever lyrics I have posted in this thread, at their respective sites.
  I think this is the least we can do, for the wonderful work these site owners are doing.
