Kiru....can't keep off the comparison boat ! But my posting was in response was to Anyway's comment.
But dont you agree that our public not having much exposure to Western classical music can miss out on the reused/inspired/re-moulded bits and pieces that can creep into IR's compositions ?

cosmician,I have been listening to wcm for the past 15 years-i am yet to come across any wcm piece lifted(except for the opening notes of chittukuruvi from chinna veedu).this song also deviates after first 2 lines and then it is totally diferent.

Yaaro..what i meant was ..a phrase of an orchestra or a chord..the pitch, tone and tempo of the violin ensembles or a combination of other instruments used by Bach or Mozart etc.
When used in a TF song...it gives a very authentic western feel to it. It's no big deal actually.
BTW did anyone notice that the beginning chord loop in PKS's "Sakalakala" is a straight lift from some Deep Forest songv ? I think its from their second album.

That reminds me of one discusion I had wit Srikanth. We were wondering how MSV got "ulagamengum orE mozi" before Boney M's " By the power of babylon"..

Cosmician 'sir',
I draw attention to your reply to 'Yaaro'
"It's no big deal actually" - Really?? So Sure??
Your writings generally reflect a person who appears to have a sound comprehension of music. On the contrary, a statement like the one I have highlighted makes me wonder if you have the foggiest idea of what you are driving at.

Arun_uk...
Maybe i should have elaborated there. Sorry for the wrong impression given. When similar chords or similar bits from instrument arrangements are used from WCM by IR or any other MD...it is like the modern MDs using popular western drum rhythms or grooves in their compositions...we don't term this as copying do we ? But you are right in the sense...the way i am trying to communicate this is foggy ? Could do with some help from knowledgeable quarters !

in manja nilavukku suddenly a bach flute bit(badenerie from orchestral suite no.2) comes and goes in the second interlude beginning..these instances are very few in a career spanning almost 5000 songs-and I have not been able to see any after probably 1980.

I don't want to argue further on this point as I am not an expert..point taken Yaaro...actually these days I am putting in a hard listen to IR's compositions esp. in Azhagi. It's good that he is sticking to a few good projects.

Ravana,
I hrd both the numbers - Pravin's and Santana's with great interest - but I really couldnt find any similarity. Yes, both have that latin/spanish style in them but similarity in tunes? Nope, I couldnt find it...anybody else?

michal jackson's Dangerous album(care me...).
It is usual in popular music copying directly

This is a small addition to Yaaro's posting regarding the 'Manjal Nilavukku' song. I looked up Badinerie and found the following definition.
"Badinerie (French: teasing), indicates a piece of music of light-hearted character. The best known badinerie is the lively last movement of Bach's Suite in B minor for flute, strings and continuo."
I could also get a relevant link to this piece of music.
http://webpages.charter.net/cynthias/Badinerie.ra
Digression: Badinerie is one of the preset ringtones in Nokia mobile phones. My friend had this as the default ringtone and whenever it rang, it used to drive me crazy because it reminded me that I had heard it in a tamil song somewhere. Now thanks to Yaaro, I know which song!

A case for reverse plagiarism!
Yanni's track, 'Quiet Man', from his album 'In the mirror' has a particular crescendo part which sounds suspiciously similar to a crescendo part in A R Rahman's Roja song 'Pudhu vellai mazhai' ('yeh haseen vaadiyaan')!!! And here's the clincher - Roja was released in 1992 while Yanni's album came out in 1997 - a full 5 years after Roja! And, it happens to be Yanni's original track, not a cover version of a older track to claim that both of them lifted it from one common source. Listen to the tracks and decide - for your listening comfort, I've also posted the relevant portions from each track which sounds similar apart from 2 minute sound clips from the beginning!

Oh why not? We all assume Indian composers to be cheats and all others to be angels eh?
Yes, there could be a common source, no doubt - but till we get proof I suppose the benefit of doubt has to go to Rahman.

I need help identifying the song copied in Chocolate (Deva) from a Malay/Indonesian song. If I'm not mistaken, the song 'Kappale' is lifted from a South east asian number. Does anybody know the name/singer of the original?
On the same note...
Sanjeev Darshan's debut, Mann looks like another Ullathai Allitha - almost every song copied! While I cant vouch for the 'every song' part at this stage, I do have proof that another song (apart from the already exposed lifts - 'chaha hai tujko' from a Tamil song and 'kaali nagin jaisi' from a Middle eastern song!), 'Tinak tin tana' has been lifted from a Malaysian song. The singer is Iwan and the song is 'Yang sedang-sedang saja' - meaning, 'Only you'. This is another of Sanjeev Darshan's blatant copies....just listen to both the numbers, and you'd realize how easy it is to be a composer in Bollywood. Every bit of the original Malaysian song is lifted. There are frequent allegations that Malaysian pop music (called 'dangdut') borrows heavily from Hindi film music - but this is a sure-shot case for the reverse. According to Iwan, his song came out in 1997, while Mann came in 1999.

DIGRESSION:
Karthik,in case you dont already have this in your site, the first interlude(Shenai) in "amma dekh, dekh tera munda" (Film: Stuntman) song that was popular a few years back, was lifted lock stock and barrel from the prelude of "tu chupi hai kahan" from Navrang, with only the tempo being slightly faster

The song is Kokkarakarakirikiri...

One more...though sounds a bit far fetched :
Is the ARR's string melody in the song "Minnale" (May Maadham) inspired from the famous trumpet melody in Khaled's Didi ?
Though Didi is a happy dance track and Minnale is a kind of pathos number...the string melody and the trumpet melody seem to have a similar pattern in it.

One more...and this time its IR :
If anyone of u has a Siemens mobile..there is a Traditional melody....a colleague of mine had set it on his mobile...and every time it rang it reminded me of an IR song that had the same melody as a beginning. Could anyone check ?
