Song of the Day: Bhoomiyil Maanida Jenmam from Ashok Kumar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/boomiyil.rm
- A gem by Papanasam Sivan. Sung by M.K.T. There are conflicting references about who the MD is. Manisegaran writes that the MD and lyricist is Sivan, while others mention that the MD is G.R.
- Raagam Sindhu Bhairavi.
In http://raja1630.tripod.com/mktb/id2.html, the author writes:
ASHOK KUMAR(1940) produced by Murugan Talkies
As expected, Ashok Kumar was a roaring success. It introduced Kannamba to the tamil screen. Although her mother tongue was telugu, her dialogue delivery is clear and the pronunciation accurate. T.V. Kumudini has done the heroine's role. Chittoor V. Nagaiah plays Emperor Ashoka and Nagarkoil Mahadevan has done a commendable job by his natural acting as Budha bikshu (Budhist monk).
MGR, then a younster, makes a brief appearance in this movie as Mahendran. NSK and T.A.Maduram join together in the movie for some appreciable comedy sequences.
The vast vacant space seen in the 'Sathvagunabothan' song is today the busy and flourishing Thiruvanmiyur area in Madras !
The songs in this movie include some of the finest gems by MKT such as 'Manila vazhvu' in Kalyani, 'Dhyaname Enathu' in Kapi, 'Unai kandu' in Bhairavi, 'Sathvaguna bothan' in jonpuri, 'Van pasi pini' in Sindhu bhairavi', 'Maname nee' in Kunthalavarali, 'Bhoomiyil manida' in Sindhu bhairavi, 'Unnaiye anbudan' and 'Sinam Kamam' in ragamalika( Shankarabharanam, Purvi kalyani and Mohanam). All the songs stand as ample testimony to Bhagavathar's command over carnatic music.
The duet song with Kumudini, 'Ullam Kavarum' is an adaptation of the famous hindi song 'Piya Milan Ki' by Pankaj Mallick. The tune was slightly improvised in the Charanam by G.Ramanathan to suit the high-pitched voice of MKT. The other song with Kumudini is 'Kidaiyaathu Vaazhvithile', also in a hindustani tune.
This film was directed by Raja Chandrasekhar. G.Ramanathan and Alathur Subramanya Iyer, guru of MKT, have done the background music. The Bhagavathar-Sivan-G.Ramanathan-Elangovan team continued in Bhagavathar's subsequent pictures, Sivakavi and Haridas.

BB
Sivan modelled himeself of Thyagaraja. He composed the tunes for his own lyrics.
I have read that he used to have long sessions with MKT and write lyrics and sangathis to suit MKT ,rather bring the best out of MKT.I remeber the author of this piece quoting "Maraivai puthaitha oodu" ( thiru neelakandar)in Darbar.
So the tunes must be certainly Sivan s.GR must have have been responsible for the orchestra and interludes.
But GR must have had his own tunes in between.Hence he could use "Echi pizhaikkum2 in Madurai veeran whcih is dangerously close to "Dheena Karunakarne".(there are some more songs of GR which he had reused.I shall recollect)
When you listen to songs like "un Azhagai kana iru Kangal pothathey" "Manamatha leelayai" you can feel GR s tunes.Rather less classical ONLY when you compare them with Sivan s compositions. (Infact in one Music demonstartion i heard that GR was behind the "bring back" Charukesi to main stream)
Sivan s usage of core carnatic ragas Suruti,Natta Kuranji,Bhairavi etc was slightly different from GR s appraoch ,who being in films tend to use more Hindustani ragas like Yaman Kalyani,Desh etc.
Basically the Hindustani ragas give better scope for composing film songs which need lot of anu swarams to suit the lyrics.

as of now, i think transliteration is better than using tamil font because:
- search is a big problem. valuable info will not be found through a google search on this site.
- we don't want to support dynamic fonts. so, you will have to have something like anjal installed on the client machines.
- updation when fonts change. for e.g., our Pazhaiya Paadal Pakkam still uses inaimathi fonts, and we haven't converted to TSCu_inaimathi yet.

- A rare gem, by IR. Sung by SPB/SJ. Lyrics by Gangai Amaran (?).
- This movie was directed by Prathap Pothan and starred himself and Radhika as mentally retarded couple. It won a national award too.
- If I remember correctly, the picturization of this song was excellent, and the cinematographer was P.C.Sriram.

bb- superb song! SJ enchants when she sings'Koodatha nenjam rendum kooduthe'. It was a very boring film. (Charuhasan's 'Ulagam oru urundai' was imitated by many of us in school!)
There is another song in this film-'Azhagaana oru ooru, Gorakundhaanu peru',which we found very amusing. Years later, I found that there is really a beautiful village called 'Gorakundaah' on the slopes of the Nilgiris!

Yet another 'perfect' duet from IR-SPB-SJ that got lost in a low-profile, flop movie. I do remember watching the song on TV, with Pratap and his then wife Radhika- apparently mentally challenged teens- running around Ooty in their school uniform, making faces and rolling their eyes (the only skill that comes naturally to the former IMO) ;).
Musically, the song brings in the morning freshness through the prelude, interludes and the way the tune progresses.
The tune is unpredictable with its many twists and turns. Like the lines 'kAvEri neer alai adhu kadalOdu vandhu sErndhadu' and later, 'Nenjodu Oorvalam vara, NeengAmal nAm sugam peRa'. And the way SJ and SPB render this song smoothly makes it a great listening pleasure. I can't imagine a Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan combo doing justice to this number today.
The 'violin quartet and piano' piece in the 2nd interlude with no rhythmic instruments playing in the background is just mind-blowing!

bb, thanks for the song, one of my all time favourites. As Pan mentioned, the second interlude in this song is just incredible. It ranks high amongst the SPB-SJ duets.

Your song selections are gret. Listening to some of the songs makes me nostalgic. Listening to this song, I remember the days when me and my cousin would run to the audio shops almost every week looking for new songs (we would have listened to the already new song cassette brought off of previous week thousand times). IR never disappointed us, there would be a new movie and new songs atleast every alternate week.
This song sounded so different that at first we did not like it. But from the second listening we started loving it.
Thanks once again.

Song of the Day: naan eNNum pozhudhu from azhiyaadha kOlangaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/naan.rm
- This song is a rare gem by Salil Chaudhary. Sung by SPB.
- Thread on Salilda: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/7233.07.18.58.html
- Directed by Balu Mahendra.
RajaG writes on this song:
This song was originally composed in Bengali as 'naa mOnO laagEnaa' by
Salilda and he released it as aadHunik baangla gaan (Bengali modern songs)
by Lata Mangeshkar. As far as I know, it was not associated with any movie.
The Bengali MDs who were also famous Hindi Film MDs (SC, SDB, RDB) always
used Bengal as the test market before they 'recycled' the songs for Hindi
film songs. There are countless HFM hits by these MDs which have popular
Bengali originals - of course, none were copies because they were the
original creators in Bengali too. Later, Salilda used this song (with Lata's
voice again) as 'naa jiyaa laagE naa' in Anand. (Strangely, none of the
other three songs in Anand have Bengali originals).
One interesting point is while the orchestration of the song was similar for
Bengali and Hindi, the thamizh version (I can bet there is probably a
Malayalam version too) has a much longer prelude, longer and richer
interlude scores and also has a concluding score after the final pallavi by
SPB. There is also a lot of voice chorus in the interlude which was absent
in the original. In terms of singing, obviously LM set the standard but both
Hindi and Bengali versions of the song border on the melancholy. SPB's
version adds a beautiful romantic touch to the song. But then SPB is a fan
of LM and SC and he would have set himself a high standard to deliver a
classic.
MS writes on this song:
A gem of a song from SPB-Salil choudhry. One song
which tells us how much IR has been influenced by
Salil. Salil is one of those melody makers of the
great hindi classics era but with a characteristic
touch of western flavour. His melodies were incisive
and truly original. This song's original version was
sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the movie Anand "naa jiya
lage na..". In my opinion it pales in comparison with
the delivery of SPB in tamil. The song is flat though
lata is sonorous. The hindi version was completely
made devoid of the characteristic lengthy prelude and
similar interludes. Hindi audience is not as patient
as tamil is when it comes to inteludes :-) When SPB
sings the second charaNam, u can find at the start a
distint "micro brigha" which is absent in Lata's
version. In fact Lata's song is ultra flat and hardly
has any unexpected twist except for the way she sings
'jiyaa laga ne' in the ante-penultimate line of the
song.
hindi version of the song available here
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/XX0100000W
The prelude is highly reminiscent of 'ore naaL unai
naan nilaavil paarththadhu'. The usage of violins and
the ending guitar pice are highly similar. The usage
of chorus in interludes is very much similar to what
IR used in many songs. This has song's strcutre has
these features:
(1) long prelude(1:09 min..longest probably in tfm)
(2) dhara dharannu mEla yeri keeza irangum violins
(3) guitar ending in the prelude.
(4) the charaNam of both songs start ghazalish.
(5) bass guitar in the interludes usage is ditto IR.
(6) "andha naaaaL" - sounds very familiar to
"pournami.." (ennodu pattu paadungaL from
udhayageetham)
All these are there in 'ore naaL unai naan nilaavil'
too. After all these similarities it is indeed worth
mentioning that IR was a lead guitarist in salil's
troupe for sometime :-)
another song which is in the same lines is : mazaiyum
neeye from azagan - SPB urugi rasiththu paadiya
matroru paadal.
A song to cherish for all SPB lovers.

no doubt one of the finest versions of any SC song. The prelude and the first interlude are thrilling, a mini overture by itself. btw, this one SPB song and the adkikalai nerame of IR are two very tough tunes to grasp and sing. especailly i found adikalai nerame too complex even though to hear it seems just simple. try singing the charanam. btw, naan ennum pozhudhu lyrics is Gangai Amaran!!!! How about that? SC is known for using the best lyricists wherever (in Mal, it was mostly Vayalar) why he did not have Kannadasan? was it because of Balu Magendran? (thinking of Balu M, where is SPM these days?
