Song of the Day: Thennankeetru oonjalilE from Paadhai theriyudhu paar.

A very rare song, and a gem! MD is M.B.Srinivasan. Lyrics by Jayakanthan. Sung by PBS and SJ. A slow moving song, like a slow waltz, but a great composition. I didn't hear this song for a long time, and finally found this a few days back. I was stunned, to say the least.
- Read what our PPP team has to say about this song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/thennan.html (need Inaimathi).
- Thread on MBS: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/8647.14046.03:08:14.html
- The song was apparently filmed on L.Vijayalakshmi and K.Vijayan, and is a background song. This is one of SJ's oldest songs.
- Look at this thread http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/12428.20873.21:19:54.html for discussion on this song. It also has the lyrics in english. In it, our SK writes:
Rajaraman:
Indha sllllow motion paattukku ivvalavu rasigargaLaa endru indha paattai patri romba saadhaaraNamaa sollitteenga? Netru veettukku pOi iravu vaaNdugaL thoongiya pin paattai kEttEn. Ahaa enna paattu! I am very sure that there are innumerable fans out there who LOVE this song.

bb- what a song of timeless enchantment!
It is said to be among PBS's favourite songs- He is said to have remarked on it -"Oru paattu thaan-adhanaal enna-epperpatta paattu!".
As late as 2000- in SJ's show in Chennai- PBS and SJ sang this song again- the magic was still intact!! So many of us jumped up from our seats and gave them a long standing ovation. What a moment!
Btw, I really love the duets by PBS-SJ- there are so many great songs by this pair.
SJ had another excellent song in this film.
"Maasil veenayum', where she is joined by AS Mahadevan towards the end.
SJ had some very good songs prior to Paadhai theriyudhu paar too. Among my favourites are 'Nilayaaga veesuthey alai polavey'-Manamaalai-1958, 'Selaadum inba odai'-Azhagar malai kalvan-1959, 'Malarodu vilayadum thendrale'-Deivabalam-1959, 'Odi vilayaadu papa'-Odi Vilayaadu papa-1959 and 'Aadi varum aadagapporpaavaiyadi nee'-Thaai magalukku kattiya thaali-1959.

bb- THANK YOU.
A wonderful song by V Kumar- the 'Mellisai Maamani'. Kaargaala kulirum, maargazhi paniyum, then sindhum vaanamamum nammil paravasathai erpaduthukindrana!
TSV-1975 starred Sivakumar, Kamal, Jayachitra and others. Another good song is 'Ezhuthaatha paadal ondru'-TMS-K Swarna.
The film, directed by Ra Shankaran, was forgettable, but Kumar's music was the silver lining in this very dark cloud.
Kumar repeated shades of the same tune in 'Ponnai naan paarthathillai'-SPB-Kannamoochi-1978 and 'Kangalaal naan varaindhen'-KJY,PS-Mangala Nayagi-1980.

Saravanan, Ra.Sankaran as in the person who plays father roles, like revathy's father in mouna raagam ("Mr.Chandramouli") ?

bb- Avarey thaan! He directed some pedestrian films in the 70s. Another one by him was 'Oruvanukku Oruthi'-1977, which too had memorable songs by V Kumar.- The haunting 'Ennai azhaithathu yaaradhu kanna'-KJY-SJ stands out, while 'Pachai kili ingamma'-SPB-PS and 'Saravanan sonnaan Shankaran kettaan'-TMS-KJY are also very good numbers.

Friends,
In 1975, a cousin of mine used to sing (part time!) KJY songs in Shankar-Ganesh stage shows. He had a primitive tape recorder in which he used to play this song and sing along!
"vanji un vaarththaiyellaam sangeetham!
vaNNa vizhip paaaaaaaarvaiyellaam deiveegam!"
He used to stop, replay saying " cha! indha line mattum vara maattEnguthu...vaNNa vizhip paaaaaaaarvaiyellaam deiveegam!" and redo this 100 times! We used to enjoy this scene!

Saravanan,
There was another hit from TSV... the song was for Jayachitra sung by PS... Iyarkkai ezhil konjugindra minjugindar siru kuzhandhai.... Superb take-off from the beginning... and the picturisation is also good.

http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/orudeva.rm
- A great song, with excellent singing by SPB and Asha Bhonsle. I have no idea about the movie or the MD or any other info. Looks like a trademark IR song.

CV, how did your cousin bring the piano sound to stage? the keyboard would be a very poor substitute, I guess.

bb, this song is from naan sonnathe sattam,a vijaykanth starrer I think, with music by IR. This song reminds you of "nee oru kaadhal sangeedham". I wish Chitra had rendered this too instead of Asha, but nevertheless a pretty decent number.
I first heard this song when O.S.Thyagarajan's daughter sang this in the SUN TV sapthaswarangal programme and won a prize :-)

wow,
its a great song - thanks bb for getting it for us !!!!
(However, this song looks more like a mixture of 'ILanjoolai Pooththathoo' and 'nee oru kaathal sangeetham' ;-)

AB's pronounciation in this song is fantastic (for her)!
Haven't heard the song before, thanks BB. :)
NagaS: Agree.. it is a mixture of iLanjOlai and neeoru kaadhal sangeetham.. both of which were better songs than this. :)
