Second the mediocre comment. Also, the music sounded jarring for a historical story. You could figure out that the instruments are Western right from the opening bars.
Also, who is the athai magal KD is referring to? The characters are Rajendra Cholan, the Vengi prince (vimalathithan?), chinna kundavai and Rajendran's love interest.
OTOH, Aedu thanthaanadi is excellent - sends shivers up your spine. S Varalakshmi's husky voice is unique.

IMO, Madennaip Padaitthan Unakkaga is a listing exercise. There is no word play etc. Movie sucked big time but I liked most of the songs - the popular ones basically. Kunnakkudi is a much underrated MD.

OK, here's another song for discussion.
Movie: Gouravam
Lyrics: Kannadhasan
Singer: TMS
MD: MSV
Kannaa....
Neeyum naanumaa, Kanna neeyum naanumaa
Kaalam maarinaal gouravam maarumaa
Never!
Arivai koduththathoa Droanarin gouravam
Avar mel thoduththathei Arjunanin gouravam
Nadanthathu andha naal mudinthathoar Baaratham
Naalaiya baaratham yaaruthan kaaranam
Moondradi mann keittaan Vaamanan ulagiley
Moondrena vaiththathoa mannavan thalaiyiley
Valarththa en Kannanoa thanthayin nenjiley
Maarum avathaaramey, ithuthaan ulagiley
Mannanin gouravam sathuranga naduviley
Marikkindra selaiyoa pillaiyin vadiviley
Aagattum paarkkalaam aattaththin mudiviley
Arubathai iruvathu vellumaa ulagiley

I liked the powerful visual accompanying the song - the huge chess set.
Kannadasan has skilfully connected puranam to the movie-story, drawing several parallels.
TMS' voice ranges from anger, betrayal and fear. Koodavey ego, tharpperumai and agambaavam.
What a song!

One of those successful songs from the trio KD/MSV/TMS where kannadasan has put his singnature with a semblance of testimony. Kannadasan stresses the agony of beleaguered father(periyappa) with some of those age old convictions.
moondRena vaithathO mannavan thalaiyile
suggestive of a small word play from within its narration!
One thing i couldn't assimilate is as to why kannadasan compares "marikkindra saelai" to the son's character thereby implying the father(periyappa) to be one of those villains? or am i getting it wrong? The "dhronAchchAriyAr" story and "vAmanan" story are more or less consenting to the sentiments of father character.
MSV is brilliant, having brought out the mood and depiction so well. TMS goes over board with his "uh.. ah..." expressions but i think it was a deliberate insertion with sivaji in his mind. pAlootti vaLartha kiLi falls on the same line.
Aside, IMHO, the best song of the movie is "yamunA nathi inge .."

Greetings:
I have two queries.
1. Who could tell me about the singing career of A.P. kOmala! (Perhaps some personal info. too) Being a native Telugu, and myself better acquainted with Telugu song history, I know all her Telugu songs; majority of them from 50s. She also sang quite a few non-film songs, mostly for AIR. Apparently she was quite well known in kerala too. How popular was she in T.N. Also, it seems that she retired quite early, at least from Telugu scene.
2. Re: *paraaSakti* (1958, Sivaji Ganesan, MD: R. sudarSanam) Are *all* 8 songs (as per my #Songs Book#, yes, those good, old chap books sold on streets and infront of Cinema Halls) available in market? I wish I could get all 8 in Telugu too.
3. I have some really old Tamil song books in Tamil script from 1930s! (Have even more in Telugu, that is Tamil lyrics transcribed in Telugu script, like: chandralEkha, amarakavi (MKT), chakradhaari (a.k.a gOraa kumbhar, Naagayya, etc.))
I would like to know if any of you have old Telugu film song books, and if we could work out an exchange.
Thanks and Regards,
Sreenivas

I tend to dislike overacting. But Sivaji was near perfect in Gowravam. TMS's "KANNAAAAA" etc suited the character perfectly. I rate the songs both in terms of tune and lyrics as extremely good.
Whenever there is a double role for Sivaji, the flawed character gets a brilliant portrayal. Utthama Putthiran, Gowravam etc. are cases in point. Maybe somebody like Sivakumar, Muthuraman, Jaishankar should hv played Kannan and "Yamuna Nadhi Inge" should hv had PBS/SPB singing it.

New (perhaps old?) topic: When/how/why did you become interested in old tamil film music? I'm assuming that most people on this group are not contemporaries of this pre-IR music.
My exposure to this was through SLBC programs (shahul hameed & paattukku paattu, neyar viruppam, the birthday song segment etc) that could be heard in Madurai while I was growing up in the late 70s. This was more because my sister listened to this and so the radio was on all the time, rather than my wanting to hear this type of music.
I started collecting in the late 80s when I went to college. I liked IR's music, but wished he had better lyricists working with him. Lyricskaagave virumbi ketka aarambithathu has resulted in an evergrowing collection of songs, spanning tamil, hindi, carnatic, devotional, and some hindustani from the 30s to new age, fusion stuff. Curious to know how all of you got interested in this area.

Bhaskar: I could hv sworn that Yamuna Nadhi Inge was by TMS!
Kishore: Imagine an almost village (Guduvancheri, a suburb of Madras) in late 70s, early 80s, night time 10 to 11, mottai madi, all alone and the rest of the household having slept, very clear skies with brilliant stars (no glare to irritate the amateur stargazer who is trying to identify constellations), late teenage and Madras 1 transmitting old songs without any advertisements for 1 whole hour. You would realize why I got hooked!

Kishore,
My story is pretty much like Bhoori's. I remember watching Sumaithaangi on DD and was amazed at how good the songs sounded. That was when I fell in love with PBS' voice. From then on, listening to old songs had become an obsession. Madras 1 and Ceylon stations were my hunting grounds. Found a bunch of like-minded friends in college and this was a major topic of discussion. I am constantly amazed at how I can still remember all those songs even though I haven't heard many of them in ages.
Definitely more on this later.

Bhoori and that too only on Mondays-how i used to hate when they cancel this for some 'stupid':)kacheri or hindustani concert. During my 4 years of engg study at CBE i used to break my transistor and meddle up all the arials to receive the Madras A station.Do they still have this 1 hour of old songs??
Even MadrasB, esp from 7.45-8 in the nites, 7.15 am in the morning and 8.10 pm used to air excellent songs
