I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I haven't heard the song "Mangala Poo Mazhai..." I don't think. Kaetta Theriyum. Any links? Nalla Naalum Pozhudhuma...something josiyam?? If that's the song, then I haven't heard it in many years...
Caught myself humming this LRE and ?? song this morning: Manjal Poosi Manjam Konda Rama Rama...Mandhiraththai Sollividu Seetha Seetha...
Don't know anything about the film/MD though :-((

Naaz, Saravanan: I dont remeber the full pallaviin Nalla Nalum it goes like this:
Nalla Naalum Pozhuduma, Naan Nenaicha Nenaippu kooda....??...pudicchen maama, Parisam Podalama...
and it goes on!!A contrasting style compared to Mangala Poomazhai but effortlessly rendered nonetheless as is VJ's hallmark. another very different song is:Anda Neram from Tillu Mullu.
By the way, do any of you recall a Srdhar-Shivaji-MSV movie that was in the making for quite sometime before it was belatedly released? It had
some very good songs that were big hits in Radio Ceylon. One song is Thennilangai Mangai (SJ?).
Another is Kalyanamam Kaccheriyaam by TMS. I have a gut feeling that VJ has sung a song in this.
Can you recall any?

Susi- Glad to see your post after a long time. Welcome back! In fact, I was thinking of you when I was writing about 'Anna un idhayam' from Annalakshmi- I know it's one of your favorite VJ songs.
RR- Is the song 'Nalla naalulm pozhudhuma' from Malargindra Paruvathilae, as Susi has indicated?
The Sridhar- Sivaji-MSV movie you are referring to is Mohana Punnagai-1981. Yes,' Thennilangai mangai' was by SJ. I recall a SPB-VJ duet that goes 'Thailaivan thalaivi'.
Naaz- 'Mangala poomazhai' is a lovely song- I think it is available in Neel's site.
'Manjal poosi' is by LRA-Kovai Soundararajan from Ungal Viruppam. Music by Vijayabhaskar.

Saravanan: I am not sure of the movie of Nalla Nalum. It could be Malargindra.. In fact, I just managed to listen to the pallavi of the song as the song was about to end when I switched on to AIR. The song announcement must have preceeded
the song. Thanks very much for the Mohana Punnagai info. although I am unable to recall the SP-VJ duet you are talking about.

Naaz: 'Lakaram' in Sanskrit is well and alive thanks to the compositions of Diskshitar, Shyama Sastri, Sadasiva Bhrammendra and also Thyagaraja. As long as people sing those compositions it will be alive. The Sanskrit in the north is slightly different from what we have in the South. According ot my linguist friend the one in the south is considered to be purer He told me about a leading US university going to Madras to record vedic recitation and not to any place in the north. This well known linguist comes from a northern state. Thought you might be interested.

Thanks for the leads on Lakaram in dakshina Samaskritham. Have you heard VJs recording of Isopanishad? She sings the slokas in sanskrit and also offers a commentary/translation in english after every sloka. Her sanskrit pronunciation is quite simply impeccable (so I have been told by scholars many times.)
RR -
Yes, the song Nalla Naalum Pozhudhuma does have a the line ending "parisampodalama..." Now I recognise this song...There is another VJ solo that came to mind when you mentioned Nalla Naalum - The song I am thinking of is (I forget the opening words) but - "Kannipponnu Mele Mullappoo Maale, Mullappoo Malayile Moikkum Vandup Pole...Thodhuva Thodhuva Aha Thodhuva Thodhuva Thodhuvaa..." I think the film was Naan Naane Thaan (Vadivukkarasi, Rajkumar, Vanithasri. Music was by? KVM? Or SG? or?)
Saravanan -
Thanks for the correction on Manjal Poosi. LRA sounds so much like LRE in that song (when I hear it in memory, that is.) I always associate LRA with the "Naana Paduvadhu Naana" song from Noolveli.

www.vanijayaram.com is currently in the middle of a "server" change. Neel D informed us in the egroup that the site will be up and running sometime later this week or weekend. If you have not visited the site recently, when it is functioning - please listen to two breathtaking (and brief) songs: Mora Saajan (Pakeezah) and Sagara Sangamame (Seethakoka Chilaka). Neel D recently gave us a delightful song in the egroup - Alangaram Abishekam Archchanai Arambam - from Marumagale Vazhga. MD: SG.
Congratulations on the birth of your twins! Vanaja/Girija? or Ram /Shyam? Or? Best wishes!

Interview update:
First the bad news: It has been postponed.
And the good news: I've written to VJ last week (after the lapse of the deadline) requesting a slot of 3 hours sometime in November (when I plan on visiting India) to talk about all the questions you have sent, and other aspects/memories about her songs/career. I will try my best to tape and videotape the interview - and if all works - and Neel D is willing - I will send it across to the website for uploading.
Thanks to all who contributed with interest.
It will come about - all in good time.

naaz,
A humble request! Please the next time when you have an interview with Vani jayaram, please ask more questions on Tamil, malayalam and telugu cine field. Emphasize more on sothern movies. I listened to the audio interview which was posted by Neel on the website, it is mostly based on Hindi and northern movies. ( i was a bit disappointed) so, please please more southern movies and songs, music directors, singers, Ok
Thanks

Susi -
First question: Vancouver, Canada.
Next request: The interview for the website was conducted to give the website a quick "profile" and was merely an "overview" of VJs singing in various languages. Hence, the questions were more general and elliptical - classical, film, devotional, regional etc.
When I meet VJ (I hope she can make the time) I will present her with more specific question regarding her southern music. That will be the focus of the conversation when it happens. If you have any specific song related questions please mail them to me at:
Naaz99@yahoo.com
Real nice names for you boys, BTW!

Susi- good choice of names! Best wishes.
Btw, Annalakshmi (and Annapoorani, for that matter) had music by V Kumar. It was Annapparavai that had music by Ramanujam.
Naaz, the Naan Naanethaan song (yes, music by KVM) goes:
Kaaya kurinji malai, kaattellam manakkkum malai
Oyaatha pani adikkum oththa kallu muthu malai
Muthu malai meley mullapoo maalai
Mulla poo malaiyilae mudichikkaye velai
Thodhuva aha thodhuva aha
Thodhuva thodhuva thodhuvaa
Another VJ song from the film is ‘Kanagamani chilambanindha Kaliyamma’
Naaz- I know you have already explained to me about the postponement of the interview, but I still am disappointed. Sigh---waiting for November!

Updatukku thanks. I am also disappointed by the postponement. Better late than never is my motto for the moment. Like Saravanan, waiting for November. But this video interview, eh?

Saravanan / Kaumudi -
The "Thodhuva" song...I have not heard it nearly two decades. But I still recall the song (with my make-shift-paste-it lyric memory :-)) and remember Vanithasri dancing with a samandhipoo malai, and vandu Rajkumar buzzing all around her! The film was a remake of a malayalam film, I believe. The title also was a straight "lift": Nyan Nyan Maathram.
I hope the interview comes about...I will keep you updated when I have word from VJ about her schedule and availability around November. As they say: Sabar ka phal meetha hota hai. I hope so too!
I am also planning on a feature interview with ARR (yes!) when I am in India (or on my way back in London. I've worked with him in the past, and it would be wonderful to chat with him about his music for films. But all of this takes planning and coordinating - and I am beginning to work on this in four months in advance!
