One of the TFM pages, someone told “ PS sung 148 songs for IR. (proof.:raajangahm.com “). Someone replied “ no, so many songs are missing”. I just started collecting the songs. Very interesting part is “ some good numbers of IR is sung by PS in telugu
“ chinnathayaval thantha raasaave” – dalapathi ( SJ in tamil)
“valayosi kalakalakala ena kavithaigal - sathya (lata mangehkar in tamil)
“naanoru sindhu, kavadi sindhu” - sindhu bhairavi ( chitra in tamil)
“ore naal unai naan nilavil paarthathu”– ilami oonjaladugirathu ( VJ in tamil)
“kanna varuvaya mere ketkiral” -- manthil uruthi vendum (chitra in tamil)
“manjolai kili thano, maan thano” –kizhake poghum rayil
“ithayam poghuthe,enaye pirinthe” – puthiya vaarpugal (jency in tamil)

  In the film Thunaiyiruppal meenakshi, there were 2 songs sung by PS
  
  1. Solo "Sugamo aayiram uravo kaaviyam".
  2. Another, I guess, with SJ. Can anyone confirm this? And pl tell me the starting line.

  Yes Kalai, u r correct. It is like this "Vaarthai illamal oru kavi paadava.. Artham illamal naan kadhai sollava..ammamma. aaaa... neerindri... oru nadhi odudhu.. andha nadhiyile sila padag(u) aadudhu".
  
  In one more film (Mariamman thriuvizha endru ninaikiren). Sivakumar and Meera jodi. Sujatha also acted in a main role (I think she is "anni" of Sivakumar). There were 2 songs by PS (One solo and another with SJ). Do you know what are they? MD is IR.

  Sung by SPB+PS under IR (MD) for the film "Paalooti vaLartha KiLi". Vijayakumar and Sripriya acted. But this song was for Manorama. Our IR used the great PS for Manorama (Vayitherichal)... U no, this was IR's second film after AnnaKiLi.
  
  One more film, IR music... song by SPB + PS.. it was for YG Mahendran and Silk Smitha. Anybody remember that song and movie...?

  Subbu, what is wrong in singing for Manorama? Think in the other way. She can sing for Manorama also. Do u remember "Isaiyarasi Ennalum Naane" song? In that PS sings for goddes(KRVijaya) and SJ sings for Devotee(Saritha). Moreover I dont think the MDs are always told about the screen performers.

  GR... oru aadhangam dhaan... Otherwise it depends on the complexity of the song and how the singer sings that...
  
  But in that "Paalooti..." film, other class songs (onnodu onnu en nejodu onnu... kola kolaya mundirikka... + one duet with SPB), was given to SJ.
  
  Sometimes I got this feeling that IR tried to break the practice that "PS for heroine" and "Others for 2nd heroine...". He did it in many films...

  Subbu, that is what called as "Trend Change". SJ was IR's favorite choice till early 90s.

  I didnt know that PS sung for manorama. If that is true it should indeed be a great honor for both of them. Manorama is the evergreen actress of tamil cinema and has etched her name in the guiness book of world records ( not that this really matters).
  
  I always had the feeling that IR made PS sing songs which has raja in it.

  " trend change".!? I agree.. IR was the person, who changed the trend ( film music). He didnt use PS much in his movies. She was the person, who was a like a queen in TFM. After the trend change she was made to sing for second heroines, some third rated songs etc...

  The same "trend change" took place in north also. Did they neglect lata or asha? What our people acheived, by ignoring the legend PS?. Nothing... We coulnt find a better singer than PS, even now...
  We are shouting like "our people are not recognised by central govt." First we should learn to respect our own people.. If she was not pulled down... we could have been the people, who are more prouded because of her acheivements and awards.

  All said and done, though SJ was Illayaraja's favourite, he did give PS so many lovely songs especially in the early years. Can we ever forget the timeless magic of solos like Thenil aadum roja (Avar enakke sondham), Kannan enna sonnan (Saaindhadamma saaindhaadu), Sugamo aayiram (thunai iruppal Meenakshi), Sondham illai (Annakili), Raja chinna raja (Poonthalir), Unnai nambi nethiyle (Chittukuruvi), kettele ange (Badrakali), Ondudu ondraaga(Anbukku naan adimai),
  Moga sangeetham(Kannan oru kai kuzhandhai),Maane oru (Kadal meengal, Dhinam dhinam (Idhu eppadi irukku)---not to speak of so many unforgettable duets

  Whatever u say Saravanan... it was notfair on IR's part..
  
  U know he tried his best to bring down PS to 2nd level. Ex: In Nadhiyai thedi vandha kadal, there were 2 heroines.. jayalalitha and Fatafat jayalakshmi. All songs for our CM was sung by Sailaja (it was terribly unsync voice for jayakka), whereas the songs by PS for Fatafat. Am not saying PS should not sing for Fatafat. But in many cases/songs, IR tried to put down PS somehow. This is my personal vayitherichal.

  Subbu, thanks for the confirmation. BTW, all songs in Nadhiyai thedi vandha kadal were good.If you can just forget that it is JJ on screen, SP Shailaja too has done a good job in Poonthottam and Thavikku thayanguthu oru manathu. The PS-SPS song- Varaatha kaalangal is an unforgettable one!
  I do agree that PS would have been more suitable for JJ.
  
  Again Subbu, while I too share your PS worship, I don't feel so strongly about Illayaraja trying to put down PS etc. PS did have a glorious uninterrupted reign for around 15-16 years, when she was literally, the only female singer in Tamil films.
  
  I feel that there shouldn't be a monoploly by anyone at any time. Variety is the spice of life, and film music too. In the 50s, each film had songs by a variety of singers. This was the trend till 1960. Even in the late 50s, each film had many singers. For eg: Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum had P Leela, MS Rajeswari, R Balasaraswathi and Jamunarani. Padikkatha Medhai had songs by P Leela, PS, Jamunarani, MSR and Soolamangalam Rajalashmi. Konjum Salangai had PL, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, SJ, (Radha) Jayalakshmi etc.
  
  However with MSV-TKR rising high, they slowly brought in the trend of PS singing all the songs, maybe giving one song out of 6 to LRE or rarely SJ. The other MD who was the only other force to reckon with in the 60s, KVM had no other option but to follow suit. I agree that the 60s gave tfm many of its best songs, but we were unfortunate to lose some great voices, who were totally eclipsed by this PS wave, and were sent home- Jikki (AMR too was partly to blame for her exile), Jamunarani, P Leela, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, (Radha) Jayalakshmi and Balasaraswathi come to mind in this connection.
  Only SJ managed to wait in the shadows, singing a few songs every now and then, and reappear with a bang with Illayaraja.
  
  Mind you, Illayaraja was not so loyal to SJ as MSV was to PS. Right from Annakili, he gave superb songs to other female singers also besides SJ. While I agree that SJ was his favourite, he gave opportunities to PS, VJ, BSS, Jency, SPS, Sujatha, Uma Ramanan etc. In fact you'll find very few Illayaraja films where SJ was the only female singer! And in fact in many of his memorable films (even in the early years), SJ didn't have a single song- for example, Rosappu Ravikkari, Illamai Oonjaladukirathu, Azhage unnai
  aaradhikkiren, Mullum Malarum, Annai or alayam,Avar enakke sondham, Naan vazhavaippen, Nallathoru Kudumbam, Poonthalir, Ponnu oorukku pudhusu, Nadhiyai thedi vandha kadal, Kannan oru kai kuzhandai, Saaindhadamma saaindhaadu--
  
  So,it wasn't really so unfair as it seems. And there were actually some films where Illayaraja gave PS the best songs and gave SJ some pedestrian ones- like Badrakali, Thunai iruppal Meenakshi, Pen Jenmam, Aalukkoru aasai, Chittukuruvi, Mariamman Thiruvizha--
  
  So cheer up- everyone has his/her time and we have so many great PS songs which have immortalised her-- so need for any vayitherichal!
