g mauruthi ..you are IR does not experiment at all..he is using the same tabla, bass guitar, strings, beads, tambourine etc. Never mind what notes and how these instruments are playing ..we want new sound ..instead of tabla a drum machine sound..instead of bass some synth bass ostinato etc..that is what we want..thanks to ARR and HJ we have resurrected tamil music from the rot !!!

Of course, like it was mentioned that there are only 7 notes and we have to play around with them. If you listen to the line 'nam thaayum mozhiyum kangal' (or something to that effect) in the song from Ennai pol oruvan, it sounds amazingly similar to the corrsponding line in Victory. Thats what aroused my curiosity!
It'd be interesting to see how the songs we have grown up with have been shaped up. Its not to degrade any composer. I'd rate it similar to a study on etymology. Just like linguists are keen to unearth the origin of words in a particular language, my interest falls on the origin of music, particularly of the film variety in India.
If you get disillussioned about our composers due to what I discover, I cant be blamed is it? I adore these guys...MSV according to me is the BEST that we had. His originality rate is impeccable as far as I've known. Even if he has taken/ drawn inspiration from some source, who the hell cares? I dont.
Dont get unnecessarily emotional of such inctances of inspiration. On the positive side I discovered that Croation composer's other compositions...which were simply amazing!
And yes, my technical knowledge is minimal, thats why I posted the clues to get info from others who can help me!

On sat., I think, I was watching "Never Been Kissed" in Star Movies. This that film , there is this scene where the heroien, goes to a partly, funnyly dressed. A band in that party playes a song, which has almost the same starting piece of that song "Oh Seniorita..pesum mezhugu bommai ye" from the film Poovellam kettuppar. Now that piece that come in "Never been kissed" is not the BGM or the film's OST. It should have been an old pop, which was played by the band in that film. Did, you ever notice that or have you already researched on that. Let me not confuse you..."Is the song from PK a copied one.?". It's just a question...I don't think that I should apologize if I go wrong?

recent picks..
1)Egipthu raani unakku edhukku dhaavani (narasimha) - inspiration from "aayiram thaamarai mottukkale...
2)Kaadhal vandhadhum kanniyin ullam (poovellam un vaasam) - blatant lift from " sangathil paadadha kavigal" (Auto raja, starring Vijayakanth)

Thanks for the tip. I was trying real hard to find the original, since we dont seem to have even a single inspired song by YSR so far...a great track record!
Amazon has the OST of the movie at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000ID3P/ref=ase_internetmoviedat/002-4959604-7821626
...with sound clips of all songs. The only spanish/latin sounding (like o senorita) was no way YSR's song. I hrd the rest too, but no luck! One of the visitors has even posted a review of the OST with situations in the movie for each song! No luck there too.
I'd try to catch up with the movie in HBO/*movies/VCD soon and find out.

KarthikS YSRs 'churidhaar anindhu vandha sorgame' is a lift. Original is a 80s soft rock .. i will let you know the artiste and the album when they play the song again in the local radio station.

Actually quite a few of YSR's composition do look like copied ones, but till anyone can give any conclusive proof I think YSR deserves the benefit of doubt. After all, there is every possibility that he is absolutely original.
A few songs which I think are potential copies are...
Rishi's 'jambo ithu kaadhal seyyum neran'.
'Cleopatra' in some Karthik-Ramba movie
'O senorita' from Poovellam Kettuppar.
All the 3 are very Latin/Spanish in nature.
Plus there's also the occasional post that says that YSR does draw quite a bit of his inspiration from JayZ, but as somebody else pointed out JayZ is an hip-hop artist and considering the real lack of any hip-hop kinda songs in tamil films, this seems unlikely.
But yes, I'm impressed by YSR's maturity in recent days. His music is evolving very well. He just needs some good directors to extract the best from him. I personally see him going a longer way than his brother who showed immense promise earlier and very recently in Dum3. But I had also thought YSR was a total washout when I first heard Velai and Aravindan!!!

Karthik S,
You still have the same opinion about Aravindan, It has some wonderful songs - Particularly SPB Duet, too good for a teenage MD !
Velai also had a very good song, 'Ooyvedu Nilavee' !

Stress on "had"!!
BTW, Ramki, any news on the original of chudithar aninthu? I was just looking for the fave artists of YSR and the pattern.
Pattern in the sense, for instance, Deva. 2 songs of Ofra Azha in Aasai and Nerukku Ner, 2 songs of Bob Marley in Nerukku Ner.
ARR's pattern is on the rythm and loop front. IR's is on the WCM front. KR to a large extent on the soundtrack (Evita, Pocahontas) and WCM and so on.
These are some sources where these composers draw their inspiratons from.
No idea with YSR though. He seems immaculate so far! :-)

My site on inspired songs is back after a lull. Couldnt find a decent free server who'd allow hosting of real audio files. Found one though now.

Would be adding quite a few tamil songs and their originals in the coming weeks.

another vidyasagar "inspiration"...
"Thanthana thanthana thai masam" is heavily inspired by 'sempoove poove' of chiraichaalai...especially listen to the interludes between pallavi & first charanam...

thanks nagas...hope u have seen my earlier two 'inspirations' by vidyasagar...
1)Kaadhal vandhadhum kanniyin ullam (poovellam un vaasam) - blatant lift from 'sangathil paadaadha kavigal' from the movie 'auto raja' (vijayaganth movie)
2)Un samayal arayil (dil) - clever piece of inpiration from 'kodiyile malliyappu manakkudhe maana' from the movie 'kadalora kavidhaigal'..(charanam of the latter is pallavi of the former, and pallavi of the latter has been subtly used for charanam of the former+a faster rhythm ambience)

Remember the famous Maya Bazaar song 'Kalyana samayal saadham' (Tamil) its Telugu original version 'Vivaha bhojanammu'? The composer of the song was Ghantasala. Well, that song has been partly inspired by the famous 'Laughing Samba'. Listen to Edmundo Ros's version of Laughing Samba and you'll know! Interesting inspiration, though!
Listen to the tamil, telugu and the original versions of the song!

Ya. Probably, the beat might make you think like that to an extend. But, the tune seems to be new . I did't go too much into this perticular song. SPB, covers every thing and its he who is thru out the song. Amazing song by SPB.

the song 'kujlamba kujlamba' by deva is perfectly inspired from mazhaithuli mazhaithulisong by arr in sangamam. and then deva used the tunes also in 'desingu raja ' song in love channel.
