The start of the stanza (saranam)in the song 'oru kunguma chengamalam' (IR)- 'mudhumai oru nal namai vandhu sErum' sounds similar to the saranam in the song 'engirundhAlum vAzhga'(VR) - 'varuvai ena nan thanimayil irundhEn.'..

I was listening to 'aayiram thamarai mottukale'
and suddenly it stuck me that it sounds exactly like 'senthamizh naadenum podhinile vandhu thaen vandhu paayudhu kaadhinile'(the first line).
Since MD is IR should we call this an inspiration?

"senthamizh naadenum podhinile" is a simple folk melody used frequently for example in many villupaattus (aarumugam correct? that was long time anyway). Same can be said for aayiram thamarai - although I dont see a note-to-note similarity. MDs use these to bring familiariy to folk.
Theres many instances where MDs have used folk tunes. Take kizhakku cheemayile's maanoothu manthayila. A veenai interlude resembles an old tune u hear in vayalum vazhvum naadagams. Since the MD is ARR, you may also call this an inspiration ;)

inspiration ffor ayiram tamarai is a folk song-pushpavanam sang this in a programme.
in the raajangahm interview raaja himself mentions that the inpiration for the stanzas in poove ilayapoove is a folk lullaby sung by his mother and goes on to sing the folk song.

curious: the chandham (meter) is the same; that too only in the pallavi. otherwise there is no similarity between the two songs.

actually: they (the chandhams) are not the same, but similar (very close).

ayiram thaamarai mottukkaLae is a folk tune of type KUMMI. If you compare, you can find the similarity of this song to Senthamizh naadennum podhinilae, kottungadi pennae kottungadi (a popular kummi song which is adopted by Cong(I) to sing the praise of Indira Gandhi). I guess, the tune would even have inspired/made the lyricist(VM,i think) to write as Aayiram thaamarai mottukkaLae vandhu aanandha kummigaL kottungaLae(n). Even the "claps" in the song signifies this (IMHO).
I have a confusion here does Chinna chinna mazhai thuLigaL fall under the type KUMMI? or is it some other type of folk?

kalai,
"maaman vudu machchi vudu" from yellamae inba mayam(?) is a tune of a carnatic song(varnam?) that starts as "raa ra venu gopala". Infact, b4 starting the "maaman vudu" the "raa ra venu" will be sung as a kind of prelude. In the film, the situation is something like kamal, a slum dweller marries the daughter of a millionier and he gives a reception party at his slum where a carnatic singer will sing the song and kamal will intercept it and would give this dabbanguththu style of the same song.
I think that "gnanalola" or whatever it is, is a copy from this carnatic song.

Speaking of Kummi and folk, these are what I feel are some of ARR's folk tune inspired experiments :
1. Yaaron Sun Lo Zara (Rangeela) - An adaptation from the melody of "En Soga Kadhaiya Kelu Thaikulame"
2. Maaya Machindra (Indian) - A creative permutation combination of a Telugu Fisher folk tune (used by Deva in an Ajith-Simran starrer and by HJ in Majnu - the Hari Gori song)
3. Saiyaan (Nayak) - an adaptation from the Padagodu Pattamma melody
A query....the "Gopala Gopala" number (Kaadhalan) and "Pachaikili paadum ooru" number from Karuthamma are easily played with only the first three top holes in the flute - any similarity in the two songs ? Could someone clarify ?

Kupps:
Reg: ayiram thaamarai mottukkaLae
Every year 'mAriamman' temples grow certain number of 'muLaippAri' pots for the goddess. Each girl will pick her own pot and maintain it for sometime (like watering etc). Finally someday the plants will be dissolved in the river. Based on height of the plant, her prayers will come true(that is the belief). Moral behind this practice: If you do take care of something, you will succeed.
anyway what is the connection between this and the song? The night they dissolve the pots, the pots are centered before the goddess. All the girls will go in round and oldies will sing something and the younger ones will follow them. This is called 'thA nA nE kottuthal'. Basically they will sing in the tune 'thannAne na ne' and then with some words. Same pattern will be repeated with different words. IR has adapted that into ayiram thaamarai mottukkaLae, the first two lines are the ones they use at 'muLaippAri' festivals.

I recently watched '16 vayathinilE' and found this coincidence. 'rAsAththi en manasu' from thirudA thirudA's chorus 'mmm mmm mmm' comes in the bgm and in 'senthurappoovE' song as baseline for very very short period. Any one seen it or noticed it?

Is the song 'thangangale naalai thalaivargale' from ennai pol oruvan copied/inspired? Who composed the music for the movie?
The reason I'm asking is this.
A new song by Rajesh Roshan in the movie Koi mere dil se pooche (starring Aaftab and Easha Deol)...'deewana tera hai' is inspired by a song by a group Bond. The song is called 'Victory'.
The song from ennai pol oruvan has traces of the Victory song too! While as far as I know the Victory song was composed in 2000, the tamil song came out way back in 70s I think. Is there another original to the tamil song then?
@nd point is that a recent Nokia advt in TV for the 3310 mobile phone plays a music which sounds like a western classical version of Victory! Which composer's piece is being used in the advt.?
I've uploaded the hindi song by Rajesh Roshan, Victory by Bond and the Nokia advt in my website. Also added a link for the song from ennai pol oruvan from Music Indian Online. Could somebody add some info to all this?

"is there another original to the tamil song then?"
Cant our people compose orinigal music, dont they have the capacity to compose ? why do we doubt our muscians..?....why we give blind credit to western musicians right away?
We need to find copy agreed..,but doubting each and every note played, each and every tamil song...with very minimial technical knowlege will lead no where.
There are only 7 notes, something are bound to appear again, the bottom line is "true" musicians some what think alike while composing. 80% of the time is mere coincidence.
I request karthik, Please be responsible else over a period of time it will kill the spirit of music listening and call all tamil musicians as copy cat.
For eg: traces of a song --- what do you mean by this? please pin point clearly if possible technically.
