Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

Hi Lollu Kamalhassan had an idea that the negative character Abhay would sprout poetry out of the blue as a complete opposite to his character in the film. We sat with Vairamutu Sir and came up with composition. I think it pretty much captured what the character Abhay was all about almost half animal and half human.
Once we got the basic melodc and lyrical direction Loy wnet to town with the orchestration alomost approaching the music like a Broadway meets Charlie Chaplin feel.

That is great.
Are you saying that you wrote the music after the lyrics were written? If yes, shabash to you guys!
The orchestration was simply great and yes very Broadway like and fitted the situation to a T.
Which do you prefer, writing lyrics to your tune or the other way round? I believe that lyrics written first ensures longevity of the songs, as testimonied by the pre-70s era. But it just makes your job harder!
Which song in Aalavandhan would you consider the best - in terms of self-satisfaction?

Its nice to here from the master himself that from others who only have an opinion about your music.
Did you do the music for Agnivarsha?
Ignore the question if it sounds childish.

Hi Lollu we work both ways with lyrics first and melody first. In the case of Alawanthaan we just got the basic melody first after which Javed Akhtar wrote the Hindi version from which the Tamil version written. the song that I love from the film is the slow song sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Sujatha ( she is so good ). We did not compose the music for Agni Varsha.

Hi Ehsaan
Nice to see you hear.
I think the song you are refering to is "Un azhagukku."
Since you are part of the Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy trio, can you tell us what are each of your respective roles?
I am very keen to know your individual strengths.
Are there any new movies you guys are scoring?

Ehsaan,
Regarding alavandan songs, why couple of songs were remade from the sankar's Breathless album?. I can give you the specific songs, but I hope, you know the songs I am talking about. Is it Kamal's request or you just want to try those songs in tamil movies?.

Hi Ehsaan,
great to see you back in these forums. liked a lot of your work in Aalavandhaan, Mission Kashmir, DCH, Shool... (one of the few to really like Aalavandhaan in this forum :-(
I think you guys along with Ismail Darbar, MM Kreem & of course, ARR are the greatest thing to happen to Bollywood. would be great if you can take on more tamil films.
As a music fan, this is my only chance to say my thanks to a music director directly. Thanks for all the music. and hope you continue your good work.

Glamor is what film making is all about. Most people don't go to movies to see real people, but people that want to be. Otherwise how do you explain the global popularity bland hollywood films and slimy (since Bachchan earlier retirement) syrupy hindi films? Directors, actors of hindi film in the last decade are new and have immature values.Sixties thru 80s hindi, tamil, mal etc.. all of them had similar styles, originality in music, story etc.. extraordinary talents. nowadays, it is disappointing, i can't sit thru a hindi film no more, it is very awkward at all levels. Talking of music, the songs sound cheezy, nothng classy or melodious about it. Only two composer teams have brought some dignity and class to hindi music in recent years - Karthik Raja (Grahan) and Sankar-Ehsaan-Loy. I saw the movie, i liked it very much, Kamal is way ahead in ideas and screenplay, but audience are yet to catch up with him and the choice of SEL was appropriate. Songs were just right, outside of the movie I did not like the songs, but in the movie could not have been more perfect. The background score was very very hollywood style. This waa a Ilayaraaja film but I think Kamal may not have wanted to repeat the tired IR though he gave a splendid score as in a similar movie "Kalaignan", (where the songs were unusual)
I think want hindi films require is class and toned down emotions, (more often than not the talented Sharukh Khan makes me squirm in my seat and some of the lesser actors are kinds sleazy particularly the slutty actresses and gigolos) less volubility in dialogs, more silence and particularly "stylish and character" score like Aalavandhan. Plus, copying movies like Reservoir Dogs and making them in America is not going to find international audiences. It is style, restraint and an attempt to be less and less cheesy that can bring Indian films to the more discerning or critical viewers of NA and Europe. We have all the talent, but harbly any other pioneers or innovators of class like Kamal or Ilayaraaja. Explains why Alavandhan or Abhya despite it being all round classy. Good sign is, there is attempts and attempts by new talents and that is the best learning curve. India will get there soon!

Hi Thagaman SEL 's style of working is completely chaotic :) . Melodies are composed by all 3 of us sometimes I may have a riif on the guitar or Loy may play something on the keyboard or Shankar will come up with a melody. We bounce ideas off each other and thats the way a tune happens.Unlike other composers in Bollywood who claim to have song banks of 15000 songs etc I must admit that we have a very poor bank balance everything we do is fresh and for the script of the film. Loy is the main programmer but Shankar and I also contribute a lot to rhythm parts and keyboard parts. Me being a guitarist naturally I play the guitar. Our upcoming releases are DAvid Dhawans Ek Aur Ek Gyarah , Rohan Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho , Honey Iranis Armaan , TharunKumars( The Choreographer from Chennnai ) Nayee Padosan , Sami Karniks Kyo Hogaya Naa , Farhans Akthars Lakshya we are also doing one Hollywood film called ' Marigold.
All and all one cant complain about the work . Yes we would love to do another Tamil film but I guess that the filmmakers are most comfortable working with people from Chennai besides the inconvenience of coming to Bombay to record I also guess that the flopping of Alavanthaan didnt really help us in anyway. The music wasnt really of the popular genre so I guess that didnt help. But I guess on the positive side we got to work with someone like Kamalhassan and go to know him well.If there are any offers from the South we would gladly do it.

Oh I forgot to mention one of the biggest films this year Karan Johars " Kal Ho Na Ho ' directed by his assistant Nikhil Advani. By the way did u guys know that Mani Ratnam and SEL had a couple of music sittings for the film Allaypayude ( sorry for the spelling ) he wanted to work with a new team but I guess post Dil Se he preffered to do it with ARR.We composed a couple of really nice songs.

Ehsaan,
Nice to see an actual composer make his way into this forum for discussion. I really have liked the music that your team has churned out. I especially love the song "kaisi hai yeh ruth ki jisme" sung by Srinivas, the way it has been composed is very beautiful.
The North and Bollywood do love simple melodies but that does not take away from them loving classical based compositions. When the masters of the yesteryears such as Roshan, Madan Mohan, SD Burman, Naushad were composing, music and melody generated from its classical roots. To say that the North does not appreciate this or venture into these territories is quite funny. Yes, the South does like classical based compositions but that does not take away from the North also having a place for it in their hearts. Infact, many of the music directors in India who have used classical music as their base are from the North, and its a shame to see that the standard that Bollywood is producing in terms of music now has quite gone down. It needs such men like you and your team, Ismail Darbar and ARR to bring that standard back up. I would like to see ARR proving himself in the classical field more than he has done and in other varying genres. Just fusion alone of west and east should not make him a superstar alone. RDB did fusion, classical and much much more and still ARR received a PadmaShree over him.....simply amazing.....don't mistake me ARR is very talented but to be placed among greats like PanchamDa, SJ, IR, MM etc. he has a long way to go yet.
Ehasaan, can i have your opinion on what you think about the great Rafi saab ??. Also who were your idols in music when you were growing up and whose music did you listen to the most ??. By the way since you are part of a group did you have any special likeness to any duo such as an SJ, LP or KA etc. ??
Regards,

Hi Ali you are very right about the older composers using classical as their base. Somehow even I cant seem to figure out why that has gone out of the Hindi film music. On the other hand I guess that there is a strong pop culture and the influence of music from across the globe plays a part in people liking different kinds of music. I used to listen to Hindi film music as a kid when there was no television and all u had was radio and a few records. I loved SJ, RDB, SDB and I loved Hemant Kumar and Ravi. Then in the late 70's to eightees I was seriously into rock and blues so Hindi music took a far backseat and theough LP and Bappi did come with some good stuff it never really did get to me somehow I found too much of the Bihari , UP sound in the music. When I heard RD's Ek Ladki Ko Dekha from 1942 somehow that kind of got my attention as being such a wonderful composition from the master. Then believe it or not ARR's Roja was the first Hindi Cd I bought in years !!!! Then DUS happened and I guess we were in game too.Ilove Rafi Saab but I wish Kishore Kumar were still around !!!
