But the song seems to have m1, and not m2.

sk, the song seems to be set in a derivative of the shankarabharanam scale, and has shades of maand, a janya raga of shankarabharanam. The notes for this scale are
S G3 M1 P D2 S
S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
You might have to verify this further, but its definitely not in Mohanam or Mohanakalyani.
A fantastic composition by GR.

Vijay:
Thanks. Looking at the notes, Maand looks ok.
If you can confirm this then the entry has to
be changed in the newtfmpage database.

Vidya, tnx for those links.Looking at the swarAs of Megh malhAr,I thought this has both the ma's-is this right?(coz they've used m and M)What is the carnatic equivalent of this rAgA?(Are bol sajni from Doli sajAke rakhnA and Ghanan from LagAn in this rAgA?)
Prabhu, considering that Dheem tadare is madhyamAvati, shudn't it be Megh in HindustAni?u've given it to be Megh MalhAr...
- From: Sindhuja (@ 203.200.1.19) on: Mon Jun 24 02:26:32 EDT 2002
....but those 2 songs I've mentioned have only Ma1...

Sindhuja,
From my(a layman's) perspective amrthavarshini should be the carnatic equivalent of megh malhaar. I'm telling this not based on swara pattern but based on the bhaava(acclaimed much by MS, the Great) it(raaga) creates on one :-)
Still, i wud like to know swaraa, sanchaara etc, wise is there any relation between megh malhaar and amrthavarshini. Experts please help.
TIA

The reply was geniune. I posted the reply to the best of my knowledge. IMO if bhavam evoked by two raagas are to be same then they should be "more or less" same. Based on this premise i posted it. The ":-)" was a relief smile. A used chance to point out the glory of a Great.
Otherwise NNM (No Nakkals Meant)

can someone confirm me the raga of the Nadaswaram piece on the prelude of 'Pattu Solli Pada Solli" from Agzhagi. The song sounds like Sivaranjani. But the starting Nadaswaram does not sound like Sivaranjani. Please confirm

kupps: i am writing a brief note on rhythms for our friend kiru. i can email you that (in which case please send me you email address); it should describe to some extent what chandham is. (it will take a few more days tho'; the concept of rhythm is subtler than what i thought and subtler than the concept of ragams/paNs). well...

Shinduja: Read all yr feedback.
looks like Megh and Megh malhar are the same.
http://media.rilinfo.net/ramgen/~saregama/HC00202.rm
This is a sample for Megh malhar and sounds like Megh only(madhyamavathi).

Vidhya and Sindhu,
Isn't Madmadsarang Hindustani equivalent of Madhyamavathy....I have a Hariprasad's flute tape and IU'm pretty positive that Madhyamavathy====Madmadh Sarang)if not equal pretty close)...pls. throw some light

This "Saarang family" article has one sample that differentiates Megh and mahdmath Saarang, clearly showing that megh is madhyamavathi.
- From: Ram (@ 134.121.72.204) on: Mon Jun 24 15:33:50 EDT 2002
Vidhya,
Thanks for the info....I'm no expert....but are they close ragas?...IMHO Madmad sarang sounds eally similar to Madhyamavathy

http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/hcragatable.html
this site lists Madhyamathy===madmadsarang../..what do u think?
- From: Vidhya (@ 12.148.251.114) on: Mon Jun 24 15:53:33 EDT 2002
Ram: madhmadh Sarang = megh in swarams.
The sample discusses the difference. From swarams point of view, both are madhyamavathi.
The sample is unfortunately in Hindhi.
First he sings madhmath Sarang(more of ma->ri prayogam), second Megh(all swarams independent).
- From: Ram (@ 134.121.72.204) on: Mon Jun 24 15:59:50 EDT 2002
Vidhya,
What is the final verdict?...Is it wrong if we say Madmadhsrang=Madhyamathy?....or shud we say Madhyamavathy is only===meg and not===Madmadhsarang...neway we rambling over this for a while...I'll see ur response and stop it there:-)
- From: Vidhya (@ 12.148.251.114) on: Mon Jun 24 16:02:56 EDT 2002

What is the raaga of the following 2 songs...
1. Amman koil ellamae... en amma undhan koilamma-MUSIC IR - Sung by Arun mozhi
2. chinna chinna thooral enna - IR - SPB
- From: Ram (@ 134.121.72.204) on: Mon Jun 24 20:34:48 EDT 2002
Pathan,
Chinna Chinna is Simmendra Madhyamam based(I'm not sure I get a Shanmugapriya feel tto)...experts pls. clarify....no idea abt the other song....if u could give us some link to hear that it will be useful
- From: Ram (@ 134.121.72.204) on: Mon Jun 24 20:40:45 EDT 2002
My judgement on Chinna Chinna is highly based on intuition....whenevr I start singing that song I end up with "Thagida Thathimi" in Salangai oli(which Shamugapriya for sure)...that is y I thought these two must be close ragas....Sorry If I had uLarified:-)
