I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Omigod, Neel D! What a timely (and much needed) undertaking! I am thrilled by your idea and initiative - I am sure all VJ admirers in this thread will agree. Bravo!

Neel D, that quote from VJ is very appropriate. The songs are also a good (initial) sample of VJs range and versatility. Another coincidence:
My interview with VJ in the Indian Express was titled thus: A Singer of Substance
Is the quote from another more recent interview?
Kuththum Usi - from Garjanai (IR?)

Thanks Naaz. The quote was from one of VJ's recent interviews I read on the internet. Yes, kuththum Usi is by IR. Lyrics by Kannadasan.

that quote was from the rediff.com interview.

Naaz - please post a link to the VJ interview you took!

Naaz: Hope you told the german-canadian lady (person?) that the VJ album was unavailable at the local store. She's going to be pretty disappointed o/wise - I seriously doubt any VJ album is available readily. Most likely the Meera score is the one stores/storekeepers may remember.
On the 70s/80s list: You have a broad range of singers in your list. So, here are some VJ numbers and non-VJ ones as well within the popularity constraint you imposed.
VJ:
1. malligai en mannan mayangum

3. mEgamE mEgamE
4. en uLLil engO Engum geetham
5. naathamenum kOvililE
6. anbu mEgamE ingu Odi vaa
7. indraikku aenintha aananthamE
8. bharathi kannammaa
9. devi vantha neram
10. thendralil aadum koonthalai kandEn

1. katrukkenna vEli
2. pournami nilavil panivizhum iravil
3. chinna chinna vanna pura (the one from mouna raagam)
4. seer kondu vaa venmEgamE
5. poove poochudavaa
6. naan thedum sevvanthi poovithu
7. chittukuruvikkenna kattuppaadu
8. paadum pOthu naan thendral kaatru

There's actually a theme: mellow songs, pop/easy listening that fit into a New Year mood:-)

Is there a link to the rediff.com interview, AVR? Unfortunately, my piece on VJ has not quite made it to the IT era (not archived, I don't think.) However, I'll locate the clipping one of these days and scan it - and then send it to Neel D to put on his VJ page!

Hello kik,
I did inform my caller about the difficulty in locating VJ tapes. There seldom make it to this side of the Atlantic (I guess, they don't go far that side either.) The ghazal albums are available as they are all by prominent labels.
Thank you for your list. I think, I have about 15 of your tracks. That's a good sign. The quality of those tracks is another issue altogether. But I have 2 weeks to get my act together. I'll compile a final list as soon as I have feedback from the rest here ( I'll begin the programming on 12th April.)
The theme suggestion is also a good one. Something to "smooth" into the new year!

Naaz:
I dont have the link anymore...yes but I distinctly remember her talking about her album of Hori songs with Birju Maharaj, and the one with Kelucharan Mahapatra. And she did say - "its music and not name and fame that has interested me!".
Kik - your list doesnt have "ezhu swarangalukkul" (OR kelviyin naayakane)...its signature VJ-style! I also vaguely recall having heard "sugamana raagangale". Naaz, please put in "sangeetha un dhegam undro" or "manmadha raagangale". And kavidhai kelungal, neen kettal, en kalyana vaibogam.

AVR, the song from Balanagamma are a hard call - I don't have those ones :-(( But the last 3 in your list are a-ok. The Aboorva Ragangal songs are classics - but they might be a bit too "aesthetic" for a "smooth" tamizh grooves sort of compilation...don't you think?
Too bad about the rediff interview. I have not read it - and now there is no link.

NeelD,
Loved the Kaatrinilae varum geetham song. I used to have it in my VJ collection in India. (My father was an ardent admirer of VJ. Unfortunately he is no more! I remember the discussions we used to have reg VJ!!!!)
Thanks NeelD.

Priya, I hope you are making a list...(pls go back a few pages in this thread and check my request from yesterda...) It would also be good to hear your father's views/opinion on VJs songs/singing. Please share the gist of your discussions with him - with us!

Susi - All the songs in your list are good ones - but they are also rare ones (locating them outside my collection will be a hurdle.) Could you please include some "accessible" ones (including duets/solos by PS/SJ/KJY/PJC/UR...I'll do my best to get the best from the lists. Nandri.

Naaz. Here are my favorite solos of VJ (Pardon me if it is > 5). Other lists will follow!!!
1) Amma undan kai valaiaa aaga maataena - Bharathidaasan song. Movie starred Menaka. I don't remember the movie name.(It is not SAVITHRI!!!). This song is very very melodious. Minimum music with VJ's voice flowing superbly.
2) sugamaana raagangalae -Mridanga chakravarthi. I still can visualize K R Vijaya with lots of maligai poo. VJ sings in three raagas. (Vasantha, Kalyani and Gowri Manohari). Excellent picturization and wonderful music.
3) Karisal tharisu kazhani aacchuu -Acchamilai Acchhamilai. Though this is not a classy song(if you know what I mean), believe me no body could have sung this song like VJ. Especially the "Podhum saami, podhum saami, p ..o..dhum. A..a.." bit.
4)En ulil engo yaengu geetham - (Rosapoo ravikkaikari) EXCELLENT! Why did this song deserve no awards????
5)Kavidhai kelungal karuvil - Good one. Especially the transition to "Pavala malikaiai parisum pottadhu aaru line" and the climax "Kizhakku velukattum.mm.."
6)Neeraada neram nalla neram - What high pitch and what CLARITY at this pitch. Good one.
7)Naanae naana (AUA)- Bodaiulla song. Good teamwork by the lyricist, MD and singer!!!
8) Veru idam thedi poovaloo (SNSM)- What expressions by VJ. "Aval tharavillai, peravillai, thani maramai aanaalae"...
9) Govardhanan vandhaan kuzhal eduthu - Typical VJ classical song..At one point she goes..Kuzhal eduthuuuuuuuu...
10)Uruguthae idayamae arugilae vaa vaa - Nooravadhu Naal. VJ's voice makes it a typical Pei song. (I still get goosepimples when I listen to this)
11) Yaarathu sollamal nenj alli povadhu - Nenjamellam neeyae. I love the part where she says "Bodai tharum..." with a kick in her voice.
12)Malligai en mannan mayangum - Another excellent K R Vijaya, MSV and VJ combo
13) malairani mundhanai sariya sariya - (Makes me feel VJ is always partial to K R Vijaya!!!)
14) Nitham nitham nellu sorru - VJ goes "Ninaikayilae ennaku ippo ecchi oorudhu...
15) Meghame Meghame - Wow. Excellent piece from SG.

Priya - I have 10 out of your 15 suggestions. This seems easier than I had first imagined. I am sure the outcome (when the programme airs) will be a true and fine collaborative effort. Keep them coming! Thanks!
