Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

Raj:
I read your posting even before I saw your invitation. It was simply wonderful ! I have often found myself analysing other songs with similar intensity. But your posting was really powerful ! Funny thing is, I have not had the opportunity of listening to this song so far. I would call it the best description of any song, yet. But I guess you'll just have to wait till I get a chance to hear it before I can comment on it !

Srinath, thanks! But I was expecting a delectable analysis of the song, so a slight dissapointment. More than appreciation for my posting on the song, what would give me great pleasure is when I find someone who actually appreciates the song as intensely as I do! Too bad you haven't heard the song. I think it is available in Ramasamy Gireesan's site. I'll wait for you to hear it! Meanwhile I hope the veterans of this thread take up the song.

Raj: azhagiya kannE is one of my favourite songs too. more than the lyrics(which i feel is quite banal and cliched), the music, and the picturization are superb in this. given the backdrop of the film, and vijayan's onslaught, the song fits in very well with the situation.
of course, then there is mahendran. mahendran's work in songs in BG is pathbreaking. if you had seen MIME 27, it was about songs in BG. i decided on that topic mainly because of the songs of mahendran, who radically changed the ideas on picturization of songs. i hope he repeats his performance in sAsanam as well.
coming back to the song, there is a piece where a goat jumps up over a log, in total oneness with the background interlude. this work, by.b.lenin, is supposed to be a milestone in the history of editing in TFM.the song's mood itself, changes from love to despair to hope. to appericiate the song better, one should also watch out for the color motifs used. the places where the sun forms the backdrop and the places where the ooty estate forms the backdrop have conflicting moods. the background color pattern has been used to the utmost effect, easily the best in recent times, along with devar magan's usage of the color of earth.
about music, one needn't say any further, IR has given a great song. SJ fits in as a glove and the expressions which she delivers are apt to the environment of the song. the part where she sings "en dheivam maangalyam thaan", it is tough to decipher whether it is said out of despair, or out of respect for her marriage, but on screen, one can see how SJ's voice sounds to show the resignation and acceptance of the bitter truth, with a ray of hope coming by.
my favourite scene in the film, though, is the one where vijayan says "appa kulikkap pOrEn"...mani rathnam must have really dug into this, and come out with the short and crisp dialogues that have become his forte.

Who wrote this song, BTW? Now, I have posted this before, Is it true that this was IR's first song as lyricist?

Dear Raj:
If Ilaiyaraaja had composed just this one song and composed no further or never previously, I would still consider him the ULTIMATE GENIUS.
This is probably the most pwerful compliment raja can ever receive.

bb, murali sankar and Ramki,
Thanks for the resposne.
bb: I, too, felt that the lyrics weren't too great. But they were simple and suited the situation very well. Well, ashwini's character in the movie is a typical small-town girl, with commonplace thoughts and expressions, right? So, IMO, the lyricist was justified in using all those cliches.
One thing I had failed to mention in my posting was SJ's rendering. Most haunting! How did I forget to mention her?! Actually, I am not a fan of sj. I used to dislike her:)....before hearing this song. IMO, this is her best, too.
Yeah , "kulippattufies" is bathes. I found that "bathes" doesn't clearly express whether it is "Kulichufies" or "Kulippattufies" . So, I used tamil:)
Great to know you share my high opinion of the song. The intonations of the colour patterns was something I hadn't noticed. I'll look out next time I watch the song. But where do they air such classics on T.V, these days..?
Murali : yes, this one song is enough for me to accept raja's greatness. But there are certainly greater compliments he can get than from such a novice as me:)
Ramki: i, too , had been thinking it was kannadasan. because, the words have so powerful an effect on you. Atleast on me. My experience is that whenever the words of a song have a powerful impact on me, it turns out to be kannadasan. But AIR claimed once that it was GA. If so, my respect for him as alyricist will increase by 95% :)
As I have mentioned earlier, there are some parts of the lyrics which I dont understand. I hope someone does a detailed analysis on that part.

Raj,
Many things prevent me from discussing this song:
-I haven't seen the movie (i know, an atrocity, because I have seen lesser movies by Mahendran but somehow things never worked out for me and this movie. Someday I hope to see it because I love Mahendran's character portrayal and storytelling and his overall movie aesthetics)
-I vaguely remember the song, haven't heard it in a while
-I have never been big on S. Janagi (Ramki, Raj, et all will be pissed, sorry, this is the truth)
So, by not sharing many things essential to appreciate this song, I just stayed out. Also, often times in this thread, discussions are pretty thorough and leave very little for me to add. I don't want to spoil anyone's enthusiasm here, the only reason I post this is due to Raj's insistance. I have been reading and relishing the peace and passion in this thread though. Will definitely pitch in when I have something to contribute. Later, guys.

dharumiye (raj), unakku varigaL thaanE vEndum.. naan ezhudhith tharugirEn, adhaik kondu sendru nee parisaip peRRu vaa. parisaththanaiyum unakku thaan...ha ha ha..
azhagiya kannE uravugal neeyE
nee engE ini naan angE
en sEi alla thaay nee
the song moves from a mother's point of view, who has had a bad marriage, whose life revolves around her children, and depends on them for her survival and her courage to fight back in life. she is looking at a bleak future, and her only thread to life are her children.
sangam kaanaadhadhu thamizhum alla
thannai ariyaadhaval thaayum alla
en veettil enrum chandhiroadhayam
naan kandEn veLLi nilaa
what does chandrodhayam refer to here? i think it refers to the overall situation being dark and the silver lining are the kids , the kids being compared to the moon.
(azhagiya)
sorgam eppoadhum nam kaiyilae
adhai naan kangiraen un kannilae
en nenjam enrum kannaadi dhaan
en dheyvam maangalyam dhaan
this stanza shows the hope in the eyes of ashwini. comparing her heart to a glass also gives rise to an interpretation of the shattering glass , symbolizing her udaindha nenjam.
(azhagiya)
manjal enrenrum nilaiyaanadhu
mazhai vandhaalumE kalaiyadhadhu
en veettil enrum alai paayudhu
en nenjam alaiyaadudhu
KD portrays here a female who clutches onto the symbols of marriage more than her marriage itself, which has turned out to be a nightmare. that is the reference to the manjal and the maangalyam. note how the lyrics bounces back and forth between hope and despair. apart from that there is nothing much to write home about.
BTW, raj, i am BB. so u needn't put sir/madam/it/?? :-))
