Kanchana,
I take it as the slip of fingers :-))
'thEsulaavuthe' is from Manaalane mangayin baagyam. Yes, a classicaly demanding song. PS has done a nice job with the 'brigas'.

Karthi,
Good to know that you are an ardent fan of P.S. I am sure you will like the following songs.
"muthukkalo kangal... thithippatho kannam...
sandhitha velayil sindhikkavae illai
thandhuvittaen ennai
paditha paadam enna... un kangal paarkum paarvai enna...
medai moodiya jaadhip pookkalai sooda thudippadhenna"
The above song is from "Nenjirukkum varai" (Dir : Sridhar), MD : MSV-Ramamurthy, Lyrics : (Who else?) Kannadasan, *ng : "Shivaji" Ganesan, Muthuraman, K.R.Vijaya.
How did you forget?
"malarndhum malaraadha paadhi malar pola
malarndha ilam thendralae...
thenpodhigai malar thondri madurai nagar kandu
valarndha vizhi annamae...
nadhiyil villayaadi kodiyil thalaiseevi..."
The above song is from the famous film "Paasa Malar".
PS was called the "Lata Mangeshkar of South". Although, both PS and LM were equally talented, it is very infortunate, that PS did not get the same fame as LM. What do you people say?

Hi Shan,
The reason PS did not become as famous as Lata is that the reach of Tamil is very less compared to Hindi.
Look at it this way. There cannot be a person who speaks or knows Hindi and who does not know Lata. In the same way, there cannot be a person who speaks or knows Tamil and who does not know PS. I think this way life is equally fair with both of them.
I somehow feel even Lata's fans will turn to PS when they hear her. What do you say?
I have heard both of them. I like Lata too. Each of them is great with their individualistic style of singing. But when it comes to melody PS will be the only person to possess it and for ever!
Hi Sachu,
I think 'Pazhagum Thamizhe' will be one of the best duets of the century. It has it all. Melody, expression and completeness.

Kanchana:
I seem to have forgotten the other song in PK..
nallaa njaabagap paduththi paarunga! you will remember
this beautiful song by AMR and PS starting in
very low pitch and then later climbing nicely
to high pitch.
idhaya vaanin udhaya nilavE
engE pOgiRaay, nee engE pOgiRaay
etc. Both these songs from PK are original beauties by
Veda.

Some comments
1. LATA OF THE SOUTH
P.Suseela was much later called the Lata of the South. It was Jikki who first became the Lata of the South. It began with the Tamil version of the AAGH song ie "Kalyana Oorvalam Varum - ullasamey tharum magizhnthu naan vaazhnthiduven". Jikki was able to sing so well-rivalling the golden voice of Lata that jealousy was stirred. It was whispered that Jikki should not be given any chance in the north.(of course in our own time Vani Jayaram was subjected to this same fate. She became about the only singer to have sung to the tune of all the northern MDs)
2. MUTHUKALO KANGAL
Sridar had always been known as a controversial director. While directing the film Nenjirukkum Varai he wanted to detract from the usual cine tradition of portraying the hero and the heroine as the charming characters. He made Sivaji and KR Vijaya appear in theri natural form with no make up. You could see Sivaji sweating in the scene. The scene became a success by excellent camerawork setting and lighting. As a matter of fact before Sridar, directors concnetrated on direction alone. But from Kalyana Parisu the trend changed. Sridar brought camera, lighting, dialogue, screenplay and direction under his control. He was a trend setter.
3. MALARNTHU MALARATHA
Sivaji Ganesan and Kannadasan were not in talking terms after the competition from Veerapandian Kattabomman and Sivagangai Seemai. But in stages Kannadasan started to write songs for Sivaji movies especially films under the direction of Bhim Singh. When Bagapirivinai was released the audience applauded the moment the name of Kannadasan appeared on the screen-as song writer. It was initially thought that the films of Sivagi Ganesan under Bhimn Singh's direction such as Bagapirivinai, Pasa Malar, Pava Mannippu, Pandapasam, Par Magale Paar, Paalum Pazhamum, Paarthal Pasi Theerum etc became hit mainly on the strength of Sivagi's masterly acting. It was pointed out that Kannadasan's songs alos had a great role in the success of these songs. Under the persuasion of some of Sivaji's friends, he threw a party in appreciation of Kannadasan's contribution. The song that was particularly pointed out by Sivaji was this "Malarnthu Malaratha Pathi Malar Pole".
This song had been lifted from his earlier version.
There is also a "private story" about this song. Anyone interested could email me because Sollathan Ninaikkiren Mudyavillai.

Karthi,
IMO, PS was better than all her counterparts, be it TFM or HFM. Her voice had melody and expression. Her voice compensated for the inability of certain actresses expressions in the song sequences.
I agree to your point that even Lata fans will turn to PS fans if they hear her. So sweet is her voice. I feel the following is a great combination when it comes to Film Music, be it Tamil or Hindi
MSV - TKR : Music
TMS - PS : Playback
Kannadasan : Lyrics
'Sivaji' Ganesan : Actor
Savithri : Actress
Bhimsingh : Director
Can you mention any film song with the above combination?
A similar team for the mid-generation
IR - Music
SPB, SJ - Playback
VM - Lyrics
Kamalhassan - Actor
Revathi - Actress
Can you mention any film song with the above combination also?

Manisegaran, that was a great write up on the three Kannadhaasan tunes. I enjoyed it thanks.
Shanmugam Murugappan, The closest I can get are couple of songs from Punnagai Mannan for the current generation:

-singalaththu chinnak kuyilae

Hi Sachu,
Pazhaya paadal varigala oru thadavai kaettal kooda namma ninaiva vittu marakkaadhu. So good and enterprising are the lyrics. Anyway, thanks for the compliment.
BTB, are you a singer?
How about the following songs :
"ponnai virumbum boomiyilae
ennai virumbum oruyirae
pudhayal thedi... alayum ulagil
idhayam thedum ennuyirae"
The above song is from the film "Aalaya mani".
"Madi meedhu thalai vaithu
vidiyum varai thoonguvom
maru naal ezhundhu paarpom"
The above song is from the film "Annai illam".
"Kan pona pokkilae kaal pogalaamaa
kaal pona pokkilae manam pogalamaa
manam pona pokkilae manidhan pogalaamaa
manidhan pona paadhayai marandhu pogalaamaa"
The above song is from a MGR film. Simple words and great meaning. What do you think?

Shanmugam, I think "kaN pOna pOkkilE" is from paNakkArak kudumbam starring MGR, KRVijaya and Sowcar Janaki. [correct me if I'm wrong.]
Yes, the lyrics in all these songs are excellent.

When listening to Mannika Vendugiren from Iru Malargal (just many of MSV's early hits), there is a romantic feel especially when PS sings Ennai Sindikka Vendugiren ( great background) which is missing (IMO) from current film music - another examples:
Alangaram Kalaiyaadha Silai Ondru Kanden from Rojavin Raja, Oonjalukku Poochooti - from Avan Thaan manidhan - any more ???

Hi Raja, Sachu, Shan, Mani and Udhaya!
karthi here. i have again greatly relished reading this page.
Raja,
'Alangaaram kalaiyaadha' is a lovely song. Especially the lines by PS in the beginning...
'...aanandha.....poochooda kanden...iya un mugam paartha oru naalile...'.
Sachu,
I love old songs' lyrics and I know by heart almost almost all of PS songs old or new. But not the latest ones.
You can always post to me here if you need any of those.
Shan,
here's for your combination:
1. Paasa Malar, Paava Mannippu, Paarthal Pasi Theerum.
2. I can't think of any but one: Thevar Magan. But it wasn't a musical hit in the real sense. If there was a musical hit pairing kamal, revathi with music by IR then it's Punnagai Mannan. But then it had not have Janaki but Chitra.
3. For the latest I think it could be Shankar or Mani Ratnam, A R Rehman, Hariharan Or Unni Krishnan, Chitra. Lyrics? Sorry! Films: Iruvar, Jeans, Minsaara Kanavu. (But there isn't one with the complete combination.)
ManiSekaran,
Yeah. I was aware of Jikki saying the same as what you had said that she was called the Lata of South in one of her TV interviews.
Bye folks.
