The first thing that came to my mind when I saw KSC & KK comparisn was that it was unfair. This I think anyone can judge. My vote goes to KSC. I will announce the result on 7th July 2002 based on the max no of votes

Wow.. I really liked this whole debate abt who is better? ChithraJi Or AlkaJi.. There is no doubt that ChithraJi is far ahead of all other playback singers .She is only Singer we have who has a thorough knowledge of both carnatic and Hindustani classical music.. the only singer who has a Master's degree in Music.. the only singer who was given the best playback singer award by Kerala(14 times), Tamil Nadu(4 times), Andhra Pradesh(7 Times), Karnataka(Twice) and Orissa (once).. She the prestigiuos national award 6 times.. She had sung more than 15,000 songs.. She is only female playback singer after Lataji who has performed in the Royal Albert Hall in London.. It is really a shame to compare such a great singer.. There is no need for such a debate.. ChithraJi is definetely the Best.. I'm not saying that Alkaji is a bad singer.. she is a gr8 singer as well.. but she doesn't have that range Chithraji has.. I am waiting to hear more melodious numbers from ChithraJi

Chithra is the best singer...very very down to earth and as a person she is a gem of a lady ...her voice is extremely good and like what many others said...she is one of the few who can control her voice very well...i know her personally and she is one of those ppl i have high regards for....she is the best and i luved her in mpkdh...whatever ppl might say...i liked her....i hope she wins the vote..and just FYI...Chithra has won more national awards than lata mangeskar...just for the record....:)..

Good point there gori. I too like Chithra for her nice down to earth nature, ever smiling face more than her voice - which is undoubtedly very good. I guess whatsoever talent a person might have, the finaly liking/disliking trickles down to the person's nature. An artist's overwhelming talent, who is ruthless, arrogant would be overshadowed by his/her short-comings ultimately. I guess in that way, Chithra, inspite of her stardom, dominance still is very down-to-earth and modest (really modest! doesnt project as being 'I-am-modest' kind).

Bringing in LM is totally Unwarranted..
There is a big gap that separates other singers from LM/SJ/AB/PS. They all had a fantastic range.
They always seemed to add much more than just technicality into the singing. Technicality was an obvious aspect of their singing, hidden deep into the fantastic expressions that these singers could bring about. It is this reason that some of the most difficult songs sung by them are hugely popular.
The other singers are also fantastic but in a BOUNDARY. Both ALka &r Chitra are technically good but if you just/merely look at the octaves the Big 4 could traverse, u wouldnt want to compare. And when everthing else is in place , it is the actaves that make the biggest difference bw singers.
So, though Alka and Chitra are great singers, there are many songs that would not suit them. It thus becomes the MDs duty to make sure they get the songs to which they can do justice.

There can never be a comaprison even. Chitra is by far superior. She is one singer that has total control over her voice in all pitches. She really is legendary. I hope she wins the vote. She has sung in so many languages, won awards in other languages and has maintained her voice all through.

Chitra is very position in her voice other than alka, sunidhi or shreya etc ...we can compare the sound control of chitra and kavita, but we can't compare chitra and alka...

Folks, did you get a chance to check out an article in last week's Ananda Vikatan. There was an article on Chithra and her new born daughter - Nandana. The article reveals the singer's elation on having a child after 15 years of marriage and the turmoil she underwent when people asked her questions on not having an issue and her mind-set when singing lullabies (it was really moving).
An interesting note was that : it seems she had taken her kid out of her home only on 2 occasions - once to Guruvayur and the other to seek blessings from Ilayaraja (I remember one TFM participant mentioning quite often that Chithra does not show gratitude towards her mentor -IR. Well here is ample proof inspite of the fact that IR never used Chithra's voice after "Kannukkul Nilavu" I think). It seems IR placed the kid on the piano and played a tune. While the kid was jubiliant, Chithra said she was moved to tears (in happiness, of course) by this gesture.
Others do let me know how you felt about this article.

Whome, the Chithra here is K.S.Chithra - the one who sang in Piya Basanthi and not Chitra Singh, wife of Jagjit Sing. For more details on her, you can check out her website : www.chithra.com. Nice of you to recognise and appreciate good talent without knowing about the person - hats off!!
Raja, fyi, her husband's name is Vijay Shankar. Her dad is (late) Krishnan Nair.
